@FleeSircus:  That’s exactly the wedding I’m having! (One I’d want to attend.)  I’m spending money on nothing but food and alcohol.  I just worry that the venue’s version of “enough” food might not be everyone else’s version.

I do think it was lovely that you catered so well to them – you hosted beautifully – but, do these people usually go to weddings and get crazy hammered?

Please don’t take of offense to this but I don’t understand why people are worried about controlling their guests alcohol intake? They aren’t my kids so if they over do it and are hungover the next day I don’t think that’s the worse thing in the world. Even my best friends younger sister got married last May and they are 21 and 22 with most friends being the same age. She had an open bar and wasn’t worried about preventing people from getting drunk

@FleeSircus:  Girl, YOU HAD ME AT MIDNIGHT SNACKS!

I want my guests to go home feeling like they need to unbutton their pants.  Your reception sounds perfect.  And, for the many many alcoholics in my life, this seems to be the best option.

@hermom:  sorry for the double post but YUP.  I know a lot of people {read: guys} who, at the word “wedding”, hear “free booze”.  I also consort with a lot of musicians, so this may be putting a spin on it 😉

@Allyg:  I completely understand! Lots of people get drunk and stupid and I will not allow it on my special day- especially when I’m paying for it.

FI and I attended the wedding and the Best Man/brother of the groom was SO drunk! So when he made his speech, it sounded like: “I’m so happy blah djgaefhgsxu brother djkfgeu  ashjdkoewb BABIES! jeksgnb BABIES! jgfkjsgf.” No one took the microphone away and it was horrendously awful! I was so embarassed for the bride and groom. At another wedding (at a church) a groomsman was stumbling drunk and throwing up before the reception even started (and it was a dry reception at the church!)- the other groomsmen escorted him out and he just missed the whole reception. At another wedding, a drunk bridesmaid but her hand on a beer bottle- it wouldn’t stop bleeding and we had to call an ambulance.

@FleeSircus:  OP, thanks for the good tip! Some of my family members struggle with alcoholism and we have seen too many other weddings where people got stupid drunk and want to avoid that! We don’t have any food planned after the cake, but maybe we should add late night snacks. We are also having beer and wine with a signature drink during cocktail hour, wine with dinner, and a champagne toast.

@HeartsandSparkles:  oh jeez. Apparently I’ve just been really lucky in the only weddings I’ve been to no one got drunk so it never crossed my mind until I kept seeing posts about it here 🙂

FleeSircus:  I’m so happy to hear brides being glad they spent so much on food.  We’re doing the same thing and while we aren’t doing it specificially to prevent people getting stupid-drunk, it is a nice side benefit to hear. 🙂

Allyg:  I was at a wedding once where I saw a guest who was so drunk he came charging out of the bathroom only wearing his pants, headed towards the dancefloor. Where the father daughter dance was going on.   Thankfully me and another guest saw this happening and were able to tackle drunkface before the bride saw any of it.
