I’m just curious – reading a few posts here – mainly the Credit Card debt one…
How do or will you all (once you’re married, if you don’t already) handle your finances? Do you plan on doing separate accounts forever? Are you already joint? Does one person take care of all of the finances? Do you both take care of the finances/bills, etc? Do both of you know what the other makes? Do you in all honesty hide anything, financially from each other? Do both of you know how much in debt the other person is in?…
I’m a very open person – and he is pretty much only with me. But we’ve known about each other’s financial situations pretty much since the beginning of dating.
For example – and maybe I shouldn’t say this here – but I’ve always known that he unfortunately has a bankruptcy on his background (hopefully coming off in 2 more years, I think)…he always knew I’ve got about $37K in student loans. He knew about my $$K credit card debt – I knew about his (very small, lucky man)…we’ve always known exactly what each other makes (and yes, I do make more than him).
When we first started dating – this was something that both of us felt was very important to talk about…and he ALWAYS told me, "if we ever get married I want YOU to take care of all the money"….which I actually started doing when we bought a house.
He has a "bucket" that he keeps money in for a rainy day – but for the most part we are completely totally 1 financial household and nothing gets kept from the other. I have even stopped clothes shopping without telling him.
Plus – now that I am the one "in charge" of the money – I have all of his account information/passwords, etc – and he doesn’t even look at it anymore since I’m the one who pays everything and takes care of the budget.
For me – though – this is actually "normal" as this is how my own parents have done their finances. My mom was always the "money one" and my dad maybe got an allowance – lol, even though she was more of a SAHM and he was the one with the 40+ job.
Just curious… 🙂
I know that a few of these questions have been answered before, but I’m really curious as a whole.
