So, I’m wondering if any of y’all have been terminated or asked to resign from a position, do you answer truthfully when they ask that on job applications?
I was given the choice to resign or be terminated from my job as supervisor at a restaurant last month. I resigned. It had nothing to do with my job performance, but I was going through a serious depressive episode and was dabbling in self-injury again, long story. They decided they didn’t want my coworkers/friends knowing what was going on or anyone seeing the bandaids/marks on my arm. So within a week after a major nervous breakdown, I lost my job of three years with no warning. I’ve dealt with some things and I’m quite stable now, so my depression is under control and not a huge issue at the moment.
But when applying for jobs I’m never sure what to put when they ask for a reason for leaving (especially online with all the required fields). I usually put “other” and then in the “please explain” box say something like, “Personal/family issues. Also differing styles of management & dissatisfaction with wages/benefits.” Which is true, there were quite a few issues with the bad management there even before my breakdown. Then when they ask, “Have you ever been terminated or asked to resign?”, I answer truthfully, “Once”; but I’m wondering if that seriously lessens my chance of getting a callback.
