I want to know how most people read my new last name:
I will be Mrs. Pozzo
Please vote.
I had a teacher in high school named Mr. Palazzo and he had us pronounce it Mr. Palatzo. Based on that I would pronounce your name Pot-zo.
I'm betting it's probably pronounced Pot-zoe (very italian?) but my first instinct is Poe-Zoe...like pogo almost. Sorry, i know it's wrong! hey my maiden name rhymed with Squirrel and Pearl....and everybody Effed it up. It sucks!!!
I've heard that it 'should' be Potzo, but my concern is that his parents don't call themselves that.
Being a teacher, my last name will be out there.
I really just want to go with the way that most people will read it, so that I have fewer people to 'teach' how to say my name.
@cvbee: My second guess would have been "Paw-zoe." Poe-Zoe never even crossed my mind until I saw it in your poll.
I think those in the US Midwest/South will pronounce it "Poe-Zoe", those on the coasts will go for "Paw-zoe", and those who know Italian pronunciation will stick with "Pot-Zo."
I say go with however hubby's family pronounces it!
i think u shud just pronounce it the way he does n he parents do too.. even if u have to teach ppl ur new name eventually they will get used to it. I have a friend who didnt like that his wife pronounced the name totally wrongly n actually told ppl the wrong pronounciation just because she thought it would be less hassle
I read Poe-Zoe being from WI. But, then I thought about pizza and you don't pronounce it Piz-Za. It's Peetzah :)
I said it as Poe-zoe and I'm from Florida.
I had an ex whose last name was Weiss, which according to german vowel pronunciation, should be pronounced WHY-ss. But his family, generations ago, decided it was going to be WEE-ss. He always got mad when people pronounced his name wrong.
I think it could potentially cause some family drama if you pronounce the name differently that your FI and his family do. Personally, I would pronounce the name as they do to avoid conflict.
Edit: At first glance I would say "Poe-zoe." I'm from Ohio.
Also... your other option is to not correct people btw :)
I have a very unusual name and literally, in my ENTIRE life, I had one (1!) person read it correctly the first time. I am not one of those people who cares. In general I don't correct people because--- why? If they are struggling or if they ask I'll tell them. But I don't really care what they call me as long as I know who they're talking to
My multi-lingual FI says that with a Latin bent (the language) he thinks it might be said Pot-zo, but that its possible its a bit more Italian trending, in which case he guesses Poe-zo. He leans more towards Pot-zo however.
pot-zo... as PP's said... new yorker's know how to pronounce italian-ish names.
My initial reaction when looking at it was pot-zo. But I could also see why people would say paw-zoe.
Pot-Zo--- Only because I <3 the play "Waiting For Godot" and that's how it's pronounced there...
I just asked my first generation Italian-American SO and he pronounced it Poe-zoe.
my college italian learning says "pot-zoe" my southern accent says "poe-zoe" :)
dont worry people butcher my nameand its not even close. ive been called enya and anna and all kinds of variations. its really not hard *sigh* i stopped caring years ago
I'm Australian and I'd say Poz-zoe. Or more likely give you a nick name and call you Pozza!
I speak Italian, so I would say Pot-zoe, as that is the italian pronuciation of 'zz'- like Pizza.
well honestly grammatically its Pot-zoe... i mean do you say Pee-zah or PeeT-zah for that yummy goodness you get from the local eatery???
@thatelisagirl: exactly!
and pronounce it how you want. i have a friend that pronounces "Campbell" exactly like its spelled= camp-bell instead of Cammmbell (like the soup) DRIVES ME UP THE WALL, but hey its their name not mine.
I'm shocked by how many people voted "poe-zo"... that pronunciation never even crossed my mind. I voted 'pot-zoe', because I think that most words with 'zz' make a 'tz' sound. pizza, mozzarella...
I voted Paw-zo but I'm with @hilsy85: in reading it "pah-zo" --- but I'm not from NYC!
I would think Po-Zo (I thought the option of Poe-Zoe meant like Poey and Zoe as in the name my bad) but I have the feeling I am wrong. Sorry!
Just wanted to note that as of when I'm writing this, 63% of us would pronounce the first syllable like "Paw" (Pot-zo or Paw-zo). So that's different than the "rhymes with Bozo" fear you had.
I would pronounce it "pot-zo" based on my college Italian... but I guess if the in-laws pronounce it differently, I'd probably go with their way to avoid potential drama.
It would be a bit odd if you're pronouncing it different than your mister, although like PP said you could just not bother correcting people!
@Goldfishpie: Weiss should 'technically' be said as a V rather than W, so to speak.
