Just at first glance, what do you automatically say in your mind?
Kari
Do you pronounce it Care-ee or Car-ee? I do have a preference but I'm wondering how most people say it... the couple people I've already asked are split. This is my absolute favorite name (even though we're not even close to TTC, haha) but I worry about giving my future child a name that she'll always be correcting people about.
Thoughts?
ETA: Also, if you could tell me why you pronounce it that way- friends have the name, just comes naturally, etc- that would be helpful too :)
ETA2: I updated a few posts down, so you can see what I prefer :) I just wanted a few unbiased opinions first.
I'd have a minute of debate internally and then go with "Carrie because it's most common.
I'd pronounce it like Carrie. My best friend from childhoods name is Keri, pronounced Carrie. So, maybe that's why?
Care-ee.
I had a friend named Kari growing up.
Carrie, I know someone who spells her name Kari and thats how she pronounces it.
Like "Carrie" short a. not like CAR (more of a short o), but not quite CARE (long a).
I've known two people with that name, both pronouned different ways. However, since I knew a Car-ee first, that's how I automatically pronounce it.
Car-ee since when i was little I watched digimon and played kingdom hearts and they both had characterd named that.
Eta: I do have a friend named Kerri: pronounced Care-ey so thats an option...
@msalexa: Hm, I've never heard that pronounciation of Carrie before... I don't seem to be capable of saying it, lol. Do you mind me asking what country/region you live in?
@imalittlebirdie: Okay, I'll be honest- I want it pronounced Car-ee because of Digimon, lol. I watched the show when I was little, she was/is my favorite character, and I've been in love with the name ever since.
So, new question- since I clearly want the less popular pronounciation, will my child hate me for giving her a name everyone mispronounces? Does anyone have a name like this where people often say it wrong? Does it bother you much? If anyone has alternate spelling suggestions for Kari (car-ee) I'm open to them, but I already know I don't like Cari or Kahri...
It can't be like Carrie. It has one r. That would be lazy phonetically. One r means you get to say the r sound once.
@galloway111: Haha. Your reason made me laugh. :)
My first reaction was "Car-ee," but I decided to err on the side of what's "popular" and picked "Carrie" in my head. So some people might get it right.
I would pronounce Kari as "Car-ee". For the pronunciation of "Care-ee", I would spell it Carrie or Keri.
I've had friends with the names Keri and Carrie so Kari doesn't seem to me like it should be pronounced the same way.
I've only ever known Karis who pronounce their name like Carrie. The other pronunciation wouldn't have even crossed my mind!
I say it like Carrie because I had a friend in college named Kari and that is how she pronounced it.
@Gemstone: Lol, FI thought I was nuts when I first mentioned the name... "You want to name your kid after Digimon!?" But it's more that I fell in love with the name when I was about 9 years old and have loved it since. And I'm a nerdy child at heart ;)
Also adding to this mix... my cousin married a woman named Kari, pronounced like Carrie, so I feel like my mom's side of the family is already set to say it that way... it's so tough to consider dropping it from my list since I love it so much but I don't want my own gradnparents to be unable to pronounce her name properly...
@galloway111: I pronounce Carrie/Cari the same way as msalexa and I'm from NJ. Think of the word "catty" with Rs instead of Ts.
Most people in the US "merge" vowels before the letter R, so I think this is kind of an unusual accent. I pronounce Mary, Marry and Merry differently, but a lot of people don't.
I wouldn't like having a name I had to correct people to say all the time, but I also don't think there's a better spelling to achieve the sounds you want. You can always say that if you wanted it to sound like "Carrie" you would have spelled it "Carrie."
@jeangenie: I pronounce Merry different, but not Mary and Marry... I can't even say Carrie with the short A like that! It just won't come out! lol. That's interesting though... so you'd pronounce Kari with a short A like that also?
Car-ee
just like I pronounce "sari" Sar-ee
It would have to be Keri for me to think Carrie
@galloway111: I've just searched a few baby name sites and they all have "Kari" being pronounced differently than "Carrie".
its my naaaaame! lol! I pronounce it as Care-ee. But Ive had some people say Car-ee (like the babysitter on the incredibles! haha)
car-ee..the K and the single R makes it NOT Be carrie or kerri to me
@Mrs.KMM: I've researched it as well, I believe that Car-ee is linguistically correct... but I think most people with the name pronounced it like Carrie so most people assume it's that pronounciation.
I've known two Karis in two different cities and bot pronounced it Carrie.
I have an Aunt Kari, origionally form Minnesota then to New York. She calls it Care-eeee.
I would think Car-eee would just be someones parent trying to be clever and pronounce a name differently lol
Great name either way ;)
I only know one person with this spelling; she pronounces it Car-ee, so that's what I think when I see it.
Every Care-ee I know spells it Karrie, Kerry, Carey, Kerri, Carrie, or Keri.
I personally wouldn't worry about how people pronounce it. Even totally average names get mis-pronounced. I'd just spell it and pronounce it the way you like. We're having the same debate at my house over the name we both think we want, and it just seems like no matter how we spell it, people will just go with what pops into their heads the first time.
Mid Atlantic region.. Although I wondeer if I'm reading Car-ee wrong. I am reading it like car-one you drive. But maybe that's the pronounciation I'm thinking? Like carry a bag of groceries, etc.
I would pronounce it Carrie as in KAH-RI I have an friend called Kari and thats how she pronounced it
@msalexa: I think @jeangenie: explained it pretty well- you're correct, car-ee is like the word car, and care-ee is like carry a bag of groceries... but do you say Carrie and carry differently?
It's Care-ee
I have a friend named Kari and that's how she pronounces it
I also know people who spell their name Kerry, Keri, Carrie, Carie and Carey
Phonetically it would be car-ee. Though one of my good friends is Kari/care-ee. I just don't get the creative spelling people. If you want to name your daugther car-ee then Kari is fine. If you want to name your daughter care-ee, then spell it Carrie or Kerri or Kerry or ANY OTHER VERSION OF CARRIE THAT ALREADY EXISTS. I just don't understand it.
Here's another one. Brianna/Briana. Is it Bree-anna or Bree-ahna. I never know.I would say Brianna = Bree-anna and Briana = Bri-ahna though that is not a blanket understanding.
