Scratched my cornea with the sharp pointy tip of an index card. Hurt like a biatch and I had to wear an eye patch.

I have felt the blast of heat on my eyes when I open the oven.  I always wondered if it could melt contacts, now I know. Hope your eye heals soon.

When I was in college I found out that if you are allergic to contact solution it will give you cornea ulcers 🙁 The light sensitivity was the worst! Some times it hurt so bad that I couldn’t open my eyes. I went five months before I finally went to the eye doctor. She said I had 9 ulcers on one eye. Now I get to use a ‘special’ contact solution… eventually I will get up the nerve for lasik.

OMG! Corneal ulcers are the WORST!! So sorry this happened to you 🙁

I work in an optometry clinic and have seen some weird/gross/painful stuff. One teenage girl had gotten coloured contacts at a retail store (read: clothes and stuff, not optical) and hadn’t been fitted for contacts, had a prescription, or cared for them properly. In the words of the optometrist: “Her cornea was pretty much melted”. O. M. G. That means she had to have been in serious pain before she ever had it looked at and KEPT WEARING THE CONTACTS. Thank goodness contacts (even non-prescription) are now regulated as medical devices and can only be sold by licensed eyecare providers. She’s lucky she didn’t end up with scarring on her cornea and permanent vision loss. The same optometrist said if the damage hadn’t healed properly and her cornea got scarred, it would be like she was looking through frosted glass. For the rest of your life. Could you imagine??

Another person refused to have glasses made for their child, even though they were told by the optometrist that he needed them, because the parent was convinced that giving him glasses would make his eyesight worse. The poor kid probably can’t see the board at school!

It’s SO important to have regular, full eye exams, especially if you wear contacts! I’ve seen people drop HUNDREDS of dollars on follow-up exams (much more than a yearly exam would end up costing) and constantly-changing prescriptions because either the examiner missed something or people weren’t cleaning/disposing of their contacts properly.

Of course, OP, I don’t mean to imply you weren’t responsible with your contacts!! Sometimes people just assume the eye will heal just fine on its own and don’t seek any medical attention – good thing you did! You only get two eyes, folks!! Take care of ’em! That’s my little PSA for the evening 🙂

I had an ulcer on my eye about 7 years ago now.  I left it untreated for probably 6 weeks (i was 23 and stupid) when i went home for Christmas I had emergency specialist appointments scheduled as soon as I left my regular eye dr’s office – including an appointment at 8:00am Christmas day.  I was told that if I’d left it even 3 weeks more I could have comletely lost vision in the eye – thankfully it was treated in time and although I have a scar on my eye (that only a pro can see) my vision is where it was.

Mine was a result of wearing contact leneses for 12+ hours a day and having naturally dry eyes.  I am now forbidden to wear contacts – thankfully my eyesight isn’t that bad and if I dont want to wear my glasses I just don’t wear my glasses and I”m generally fine (0.75 correction in each eye and a slight astigmatism).  Green eyes totally weren’t worth it!

Wow, I never thought about that. I’m really glad you’ll be better soon.

I once got hot hot pepper in my eye with contacts on and it hurt so badly I thought I had to go to the hospital.

I get eye ulcers super easily, I feel your pain- literally. Never ever evvveeerrrr sleep in your contacts, always remove your eye make up and make sure the case you store your contacts in is clean. I’ve been wearing contacts since 5th grade, trust me!
