I can't wait to hear all of your stories.
I'll start. (It's short!) DH (SO at the time!) and I were sitting on the couch at my old apartment. Not really talking, just sitting there, holding one another. No TV. No music. Just us. He said, "I hate to do this to you, <my name>, but.... I'm in love with you." I felt breathless but murmured, "Thank goodness. Because I am in love with you, too." I'd felt it and known it before then, but I wasn't sure he felt the same, so I kept it to myself. :)
Ironically enough, he said he "hated to do this to me," but it was the BEST thing that EVER happened to me!!!! :)
One of my favorite moments....
Though early for some; DH and I knew right away this was it. We had been dating just a little over 2 weeks and he suprised me one night at my condo. He was working late and I fell asleep on my couch when he came over and said he had a suprise for me but I needed to put something warmer on. He wouldn't tell me where we were going and I was a little unsure bc it was about 11:30 pm. So off we went. About 40 minutes later we ended up in a corn field on land his parents owned where he put out a blanket and snacks. It's a very open farm field and the night sky was perfectly clear and there were a ton of stars out. We started talking about us and where we were heading and what we wanted out of this and life when he said it. It was one of the best nights I've ever had and probably the most romantic thing he has done. What's even better; we built our home on that same land 3 years later. :)
On our first date. He was best friends with a highschool friend and I had known him for years. At the end of our date he grabbed my face and told me that he had loved me since the day we met. And I was done, hook, line, and sinker.
@MissGreen: Oh, that's so sweet!! :)
It was soon for us too. I'd known him for 6 years socially. He said it on a Wednesday, and we'd only become "official" on the Friday before. :)
When you know, you know because you can FEEL it!!
We were in the least romantic spot ever (Chicago's El) on the way to a holiday party for the store I worked for. He had gone all out, bought a new outfit, was nervous - it was the first time he had ever really gotten dressed up around me. We were at the Grand Red Line stop - we were just joking around with each other up until this point - and said, "Oh, you love me" or something like that. He got all quiet and embarrased. I was really confused. So we sat in silence for awhile... then he finally turned to me and said, "I love you, Summerteeth (well, he used my actual name)"
His wedding band has the latitude & longitude coordinates for the Grand Red Line stop engraved in them :)
My FI went off for the weekend to his brother's graduation and I made him three envelopes for each morning that he would be gone. They each had a note about how much I missed him and hoped he would have a great day. They also included two secrets from Postsecret. The site that has people send in their secrets on a post card. I have always saved my favorites.

He loved it! He said he had been trying to find a way to say it to me but was too nervous. That Sunday he came back home. We said it over and over and I remember how great but foreign it felt to say those three words to him.
Thanksgiving Day 2004... we had been dating a month (but were besties in HS) and we were just talking and he mumbled I love you. and I stopped talking and said "What?!" and he wouldnt say it again lol I told him that he must not of meant it if he couldnt repeat it and he said I do mean it! I LOVE YOU! and I just said "Good! cause I love you too!!! Im so glad you finally said it cause ive been wanting to tell you for a month!" haha :D
Oh my gosh, it was amazing. One of the best memories. This was his first "real" relationship so it made everything somehow so special. I think he knew I was so ready to tell him that I loved him, but I waited because I was scared!!! One morning, unexpectantly, while he was saying good-bye to me in my driveway (I was headed to work!), on our 3 month anniversary he stood outside my car and peaked his head in my side...and slowly pushed my sunglasses up on top of my head and then he said "Happy 3 month anniversary, I love you RR". And then he kissed me. Let me tell you. It goes down in history as one of the most magical kisses. I felt it in my knees!!! I've heard people talk about that, but I've never experience it! It radiated through my body, it was freakin' awesome!!!! It was all in a slow motion, I can remember it so clearly!
@MissGreen: What's even better; we built our home on that same land 3 years later. :)
I love that!!!
@Baby_Diva: Aww!
@MissGreen: That is so romantic I just about died.
@tksjewelry: Awesome!
Mine is not romantic. It was actually the most embarassing moment of my life.
We were laying in his bed. We were up talking all night and both fell asleep. (We hadn't had sex) We woke up in the morning and he had me in his arms. It just slipped right out of my mouth. "I love you" He replied "Thank you"
I wanted to die. I didn't say it again or acknowledge what he had said. I wanted to die. 2 weeks later he confessed his love in a much better way, but that situation was so awful.
@mwitter80: Awww! The words do tend to slip out sometimes when you're in the "wrapped in his arms" setting!
I'm sure that the fact that you'd already confessed your life made it much easier on your DH to confess HIS love to you...he already knew where you stood.
Kind of unrelated but super funny (at least to me)
I had a SO once that tried so hard that it was almost sad, he tried to recite one of the speeches that Darcy told Elizabeth in Pride and Prejudice, you know the one if you have read the book. This was not a book guy at all, just a complete cowboy, and I know that he tried to look something romantic up online. (and he tried to pass it off like it was an original thought of his)
I was totally shocked and just looked at him and said "Are you kidding? My living room is a library and you used a line from the most populare chick book ever!? You might want to rethink that...."
I know it was kind of mean of me, but I was alot harder of a personality back then.
@tksjewelry: Ha!! That is rough!! He really should have known better. At the very least, he could have quoted his source and said that he picked it because it was how he felt about you, instead of trying to pass it off as his own. :)
Aww these are just too cute!
Mine happened laying in bed one night after my SO and one of his college roomates did one of their "Iron Chef" competitions. They have been doing them since college, and I had just met a ton and a half of his friends.
Anywho, laying in bed, we were being all cuddly and cute. I kinda sorta whispered it after saying goodnight, not thinking he hard me- but he did. He kinda gasped and said "wow. I love you too!" turns out we had both wanted to say it for a while, but didn't want to scare the other off!
we had been officially together for 6 months and we were celebrating our half year anniversary :) yes we're nerdy like that! haha he took me on a hike to a place that had a beautiful view, then after that we went back to his house and got all dressed up and he took me out to dinner.. then we went back to his house and were exchanging gifts and he said babe I have something to tell you I love you :) I wish I could go back to that moment :) I said I love you too.. and he then asked if I felt that or if I just said it because he said it... but then he opened one of the gifts I gave him (a picture frame with my pic in it and on it was engraved I love Baby Tony) so it was like we both wanted to tell each other and it was perfect :)
me and my FI were going out one night and when we were saying good bye I said ok love you bye.. And in my head im like Oh shi! what did I just say!! I let it slide really smoothly and pretended I said nothing...
Next day. were out again and were saying good bye once again.. And I go.. ok.. love you .. bye!! and in my head im like.. WTH! what am I SAYING!?
Hahahahahah, so we were on the fone tha night, and im like um... question.. did you hear what I said today? hes like yea-- you said u loved me, I wasnt sure if thats what you said or not.. Im lik.. yea just let it go I dont kno what I was thinking..
then the next day we were out in the mall and sitting n ext to each other in the Cafetieria then he whispered " I love you "
Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!! I wub him oober munches!
We had been dating 2 months before my husband (then boyfriend) left out of town to see his beloved San Francisco Giants. He would call me everynight that he was gone and at the end of one of our conversations I said "Ok, goodnight. I love you"... HOLY CRAP!!! He didn't say anything nor did I and I thought to myself "Whew!, he didn't hear that". The next night came and while on the phone he said "I heard what you said". I played dumb and said "What? What did I say" "You know what you said. It's alright cuz I love you too".
I felt like I was on cloud nine. "He loves me, He loves me!! Yippie!!!" He came home a few days later with a pink (my fav color) SF Giants Build-A-Bear with a baseball for a nose that he built himself. She's soooo cute!! He named her "My Angel" (his name for me). He has the biggest heart of anyone I know and I love him more and more each day. I don't ever regret letting my feelings slip.
HAHA!! awwwwwwwwwwww sounds a lot like my story!! EEEEEEEEEEP haha its a great feeling!
Our story is very similar to OPs. We were on our first holiday together and were just laying in the bed enjoying the post glow of a massage and chatting when FI gets all hesitant, took him about 5 minutes and then he says "I don't want to freak you out..." gets all quiet again so I am lying there thinking all this bad stuff ie he cheated, he's really a woman, he's married, has a tribe of kids etc hahaha then he finally says "I love you" was so cute. I just replied with a I love you too and glad you said it cos I have been trying to find a way to tell you since Xmas (which was about 3-4 weeks earlier when I had realised omg this is the guy for me) pretty sure it then moved into a "who knew first" discussion hahaha
Via text, a few weeks after we met, haha. I was really sick and had gotten up at midnight to take an antibiotic (I had an ear infection, which made me feel like a five-year-old--is there anyone else who still gets those as an adult?). I was sitting at the kitchen table when my phone buzzed, and I got a text from DH that said, basically, "I'm sorry if this seems really soon and I don't want to freak you out, but I love you." I thought it was very sweet. I didn't actually say it back to him until about a month later, and he didn't press the issue--I think he was embarrassed! He seemed relieved when I finally told him "I love you." That text made me smile, though.
We were on a yacht on the coast of Italy. We went with some of his extended family (his aunt took us to Europe as a graduation present) and we'd been dating a couple months and friends for over a year. We shared a little room while we went up and down the coast for two weeks... On bed one night (snuggling but not sexing haha) he told me first :) Definitely romantic and Italy will always be one of my favorite places :)
You guys have some really great stories!!!
DH is feeling all dejected now because he is worried that I'll be jealous of you guys' stories!
Of course he knows that I think our moment was PERFECT.
Hhaha It sounds perfect to me!! Everyones story is perfect to them no matter where and how really! Yaaaayy!
We were in college laying in my dorm room bed after dating for a few weeks.
him- "Maureen?"
me- "What?"
him- "I like you."
me- "I like you too."
him- " No. I really like you."
me- "Oh. Well, I really like you too."
him- "But it's like I really like you."
me- "We've established we like each other."
him- "I love you."
It stil makes me smile.
We'd been dating 6 months when his 30th birthday rolled around. It was fun, but a complete shitshow with a bunch of people getting really drunk at an awesome bar, but I stayed sober to DD. Toward the end of the night, he pulled me over to a corner and I just stood there smiling at him while he loudly whispered: "KISSSSSTEN... shhhhhhhhh!!!!!.... shhh.... Iiiii luff you. NO I DO. Stop it. Shhh!!! Kissten. I love you, I do. And I'm going to tell you again when I'm sober enough to stand up by myself."
VERY ROMANTIC.
Not so much. But I liked it anyway. He was so adorable shushing me (even though I wasn't saying anything), and the look of concern on his face was pretty cute. I let it go for a couple weeks and ended up saying it to him while we were both stone cold sober after a fun night out. :)
I have a similar story, OP!
When my SO and I first met, he was living with his brother, helping him and his wife get back on their feet. Because of that, whenever I would come over, we'd sleep on the couch together and we had to be quiet after they went to bed. So late one night we were laying on the couch, talking and I was telling him how I was always the one who "did" everything in the relationships I was in. Asking out, first kiss, "I love you", ect. And I was kind of annoyed because he was trying to dance around his feelings (we weren't officially dating because of some other circumstances) and he just grabbed my face and kissed me really deep, looked me in the eye and said, "I love you."
I cried. It still makes me want to cry until this day. :)
I think our story is the cutest, dorkiest thing ever, but maybe I'm biased. ;)
We were sitting on his bed playing some postcoital minecraft, as usual. I had borrowed his computer the week before and played on his account while I was bored at a baby shower, and I dug a hole in the shape of a heart all the way down to the bedrock. I guess since then, he had gone back to that map and added to it, carving "I <3 you Christine" into the ground, and lit it with torches. Then he built a tower and stood on it so the whole thing was in view. He showed it to me and I started freaking out at how romantic that was, and then he told me he loves me! :) I of course told him I love him too, it was just perfect! And so us.
We were in a sort-of LDR at the time, and I text him "I love you" he responded with something about I love you too, and I responded "No you don't, you just said it because I said it first." It's one of our funnier memories :)
Haha, mine was the opposite as you. My fi was the one that blurted it out to me while sitting on the couch after we had sex the first time. Lol. I just said "Thank you". And after that day, he kept saying it to me and giving me these piercing eyes that were telling me to say it back. I just...couldn't. It didn't feel genuine if I had said it right after he did. So I waited two weeks (I wasn't counting) and said it to him. =]
Aw, I like this thread. Our "I love you" story is very special to me, it's a moment I will never forget.
It was the day of my grandmother's funeral. We had been dating for 6 months, but he had never met my grandmother. He came to the funeral service with me and I've never been more grateful that he was the strong and silent type. When we got to the cemetary, there weren't enough men to be pallbearers, so my uncle asked my guy to help. Without a moment's hesitation, he agreed to help carry the casket.
At the end of that very long day, we were back at my apartment and I was just laying on the couch watching TV. He came into the room and - in an uncharacteristiclly bold demonstration of affection - laid on top of me and kissed me sweetly. I couldn't hold back anymore, so I quietly said "I love you". Of course he didn't hear me, so he said "what?" and I had to repeat myself. Luckily, he said "I love you, too".
We were at his mom's house on Christmas Eve and I think we were just cuddling on the air mattress (just me and him, not his mom...awkward...) and he said something like "can I tell you something? I love you"
And the next day (for Christmas) he gave me a heart necklace. Soooo cute <3
I absolute LOVE reminiscing about our days as a brand new couple, when there was that rush of endorphines and excitement and uncertainty. That first "I love you." is such a huge milestone!!
And I love that DH didn't just say "I love you." -- he said, "I'm in love with you." That was so special to me. I felt so relieved, because I knew that I had been feeling the same way. AND it was before we'd even had sex for the first time. So that was awesome.
I love mushy-gushyness!!
I love all of these sweet and unique stories!
My SO was early at spilling the "I love you" beans. We had been dating about three weeks (?) when we were hanging out in the park on the grass as the sun went down. I was laying on the grass and he propped himself up on his elbow and started giving me little kisses. With each kiss, he's say something he liked about me, like "You're sweet. You're smart." I don't exactly remember any of those because he finished it off with "...and I love you."
I said it back about a week later. I told him my head was telling me to wait, to take it slow, but that my heart and everything inside me was shouting "I Love You!".
@maureen9004: SO CUTE!
@KristenGotMarried: Lol! Awesome. Gotta love the drunken shushing. :P
I told my FI i loved him first...in a text message hahah. I'd never told a guy I loved him before and was super scared of being shut down or just saying it in person so I text him...but he told me it doesnt count until I say it in person so we exchanged I love you's in the standing cooler at his job haha. VERY COLD!
We were an online relationship, and had moved on to talking on the telephone every night (long distance). I really, really wanted to tell him, but was afraid he didn't feel the same way. He could tell I had something I wanted to tell him, and told me to just say it. So I did. And he told me he loved me too.
I actually recently read a study that said in heterosexual relationships, men tend to say "I love you" before the females by a couple of weeks (I think I remember that correctly - it was at least a few weeks, more than just a day or so). I just told mypartner about that study the other night, and it turns out I was the first time he said it first. Anyway, on to the story. I'd been thinking about how I felt about my partner for two or so weeks - I'd gone out of town for a conference and so many things went wrong. Te whole time I kept thinking about how much I missed him and at one point was bawling in my hotel bathroom on the phone with him and almost told him I loved him when I hung up the phone. So I came over to my partner's house and we were going to a concert - I was super nervous b/c it was going to be my first time meeting a ton of his friends who he's close to (and he was also friends with the band). After the concert, he wanted another drink (I had to be up early to teach) and grab some food. That's when he started to act a little weird. On the ride home he was acting super weird and not like himself at all, and I was thinking he wanted to break up with me. In the driveway he grabbed my hand and said he wouldn't go inside until he said something to me and he understood if I left him, blah blah blah. He just kept blathering on and I finally had to be like "JUST SAY IT. WHAT THE HELL?" and he was shaking! He told me he was in love with me and he understood if I kicked him out of my car and wanted to drive away. I told him I was in love too when we were in the house. I just remember standing in the kitchen with no lights on, and he actually started crying. He was married about 6 years ago, and they divorced after less than 10 months (and she cheated on him). He hadn't been in any serious relationships since then and never thought he'd be in love again. I'm also divorced and also thought I'd never be in love again.
These are so cute! Aw, it makes me happy.
We were seniors in high school and it was after a football game. Not too exciting, haha.
