My mum is visiting me right now to sort out wedding stuff. Today the florist quote came back. £2500!!! I almot fainted, then LOL. I can’t believe they had the cheek to quote that amount. Suddenly got really freaked out about the cost of the whole wedding, especially with me just having graduated and no job in sight (I work as a jewellery designer in the creative industries). So went into major brooding ‘how can we save money’ mode. Fast forward to after dinner. Me having thought about ways to save money, suggest to mum that instead of having big showy ‘candelabra dripping with flowers’ centrepieces, we could have the smaller centrepieces on half the tables (saving of 2/3 on the big ones) and then order smaller candelabras from florist suppliers and decorate them ourselves (saving approx 3/4 on the big ones) altogether this would cut the flower bill by about £1900. Was really pleased. Not so mum. She said it would look cheap, that even though I am a designer (with an MA from the Royal college in London) I knew nothing about aesthetics and design, that she would not be embarrassed in front of her friends. After a shouting match she stormed out and went to bed. All because I was trying to save money! I just don’t get it…

From what it sounds like, it would look nice. Who is paying for the wedding?

If you are paying for the wedding then she has no say. If she’s concerned about being “embarrassed” in front of her friends then she should pony up and pay the difference. If she is paying and she is willing to spend the extra money, then let her and save yourself the trouble.

If you’re paying for the wedding, explain to her that you are trying to save money!
Plus, i highly doubt that she would be embarrassed with the floral design. I mean, really…. people will be looking at you and seeing how happy you are.. not if the floral design was PERFECT..

Embarrassed in front of her friends? It’s your wedding, you’re paying for it, so why are her friends even invited? 🙂
Do what makes you happy.

Gosh, hope my poor mum isn’t going to be embarrassed! I’ve ordered two dozen jam jars online and we’re putting posies of roses in them! LOL Total cost $80 plus some dosh for a bit of ribbon to go round them!
If your mum is worried about you embarrassing her she should pay the difference. That’s such a harsh thing for her to say. Perhaps you could find some pictures to show her what you’re picturing. Maybe then she’ll come round.
