    Hey bees! I'm a first time mommy and paranoid about everything I put in my body now. I'm trying to eat healthy and was wondering if hummus is ok to eat? I keep reading in various places that it's bad or it's really good. Which one is it? TIA!

    Hummus is just chickpeas, olive oil, and some seasoning. I don't see why it would be bad. It's healthy!

    I read that it could have listeriosis. Hopefully not because I can finally eat all the veggies I need it I dip it in it :)

    If in doubt ask your doctor. I'm thinking if you buy a good brand of it like Sabras, it should be safe but I'm not the expert. I havent heard any pregnant person say they were avoiding hummus because of listeria.  There are also some store made versions of it in generic plastic cups that dont even seem to be sealed properly, I guess those are the ones to avoid.

    Because there is a tiny tiny tiny risk of listeriosis doesn't mean it's "unhealthy".  I'm sure you're aware of the cantalope-linked listeriosis that has been in the news in recent weeks.

    If you are worried about hummus having listeriosis but love to eat it, just make it at home. It's super easy!

    Or you could always do what they say for lunch meat: microwave it. But I'm not sure if that would affect the taste of the hummus.

    @abbyful:

    Agreed, just make it yourself. Chickpeas is actually a protein source which you need during pregnancy.

    Thanks for the suggestions ladies! I eat the Sabras one, but I think I'll try to make my own next time.

    I ate hummus throughout my pregnancy.  Never heard anything bad about it but check with your OB.

    I thnk they give that warning about anything left out on a salad bar.  Making your own or buying it prepackaged you should be fine but you could always microwave it first if you still have worries.

    Packaged hummus doesn't carry the risk of listeria that chickpeas in a salad bar do.  It's like the difference between eating imported soft cheese or pasteurized domestic soft cheese.  I would stick to packaged and sealed hummus.

    (I ate it when I was pregnant too, I couldn't get enough!)
