What is he interested in? Outdoorsy stuff? Geeky stuff? It's hard to come up with something without knowing a bit more about him.
What's your budget? DH's mom got us a weekend away, and I sprung for parasailing over the lake, and then I got us a personal chef to make us a fabulous meal at home when we pulled in the driveway as a surprise. It was perfect.
How about a watch? Someone I work with got a rolex from her husband (it was her 40th)
I always group gifts into two categories - experiece gifts or a tangible gift. It sounds like you typically give tangible ones - do you think he would prefer that? Or do you think he'd also enjoy an experience gift (like tickets to something, a membership somewhere, etc.)?
something HE would like- a flying lesson, stunt driving , racecar driving, xbox, a really nice watch (hey, he got you an engagement ring!)
I got my hubbie an expensive watch (about 1000 dollars) and he is SO proud of it, he LOVES it!
I got DH a flying lesson and he loved the idea. Unfortunately, he has yet to actually redeem the gift certificate for it due to relocating for his job BUT he was super happy with the gift.
electric shaver/bear trimmer? Mine LOVES his, and even my dad got one as a gift and was super skeptical, but ended up really liking it.
I gave DH a flying lesson too!!! He seriously LOVED it. If we wanted to pay for it (it is expensive) he would go through all the training to be a pilot. It gave him a lot of confidence. Huge confidence builder, and it is best to gift experiences if you can (IMO)!
For my husband's 30th I got him (me accompanying! hehe) a helicopter ride over Niagara Falls :) Along with a surprise party that was meant to throw him off the scent of the real 30th birthday surprise!
For my BILs we sent him skydiving. It's been on his and my husband's bucket list.
I've also gotten my husband a flying lesson (for his 26th birthday). He actually didnt love it as much as I thought he would though! He was really excited by the present but said flying itself was somewhat boring haha. Oh well. Another one I got him that he loved though was a tablesaw - he likes to do woodworking so it was a perfect gift.
What things does your husband like to do? You could get him a really nice tool set (tool box, with a bunch of tools inside) or an experience is always a good idea. They have gift cards to racetracks where you can race on the racetrack for a day. Or maybe a hot air balloon ride or something like that. Or you could always do a mini-vacation somewhere that he's always wanted to go!
we went skydiving for my husband's 30th birthday (while we were on our honeymoon) - he loved it, and it was great to do it together. Plus we now have some pretty impressive photos to hang on our walls as a reminder :)
My husband's birthday is in the spring so we usually have nice weather and I plan a cool day trip for him, and where I take him is a secret until we get there. He's a history buff so we'll tour old trains, war ships, museums etc. It's not very expensive at all and he's always happy to just hang out together and get out of the house. I think he really likes to share his love of history with me, but it could go for anything like if he loves art, go to an art museum. If he loves sports take a tour of your teams baseball park and learn it's history. Then you can hunt on Yelp for a good restaurant in the area and get some dinner! I think birthdays are a good time to try something new together :)
For my FI's 30th, I did 30 gifts over 30 days. Most were really small - a love note, breakfast in bed, a movie date....some were more elaborate....it was fun trying to think up all the gifts and he enjoyed it.
for my boyfriend's 30th, i booked him a meal at a famous steak restaurant in london. then just as we were having our starters, i handed him a card. when he opened it, it had a room key inside for a hotel room! food + sex, gets them every timeeeee ;)
I got my FH tickets to see his Fav hockey game and he could go with whom ever he liked. He ended up going with his dad his dad turned 60 6 days before FH turned 30.
Could you do one night in a fancy-schmacy hotel room? Or even a not-fancy one? Maybe a nice dinner beforehand? It's still a small "getaway," but less $$$ than a trip!
I gave DH (then FI) a signed Sidne Crosby jersey for his 40th birthday. It's in a display case as well, and we threw a party at our local pub with about 30 of his friends. He knew about the party, but not the signed jersey. He freaked out when he opened it and I got the best picture of his reaction...like a kid on christmas morning, LOL! Cost me a lot, but was worth it.

Can anyone share some great gifts they've given for your FI's or DH's birthday? Particularly a milestone birthday, like a 30th? I want to get something special, and I feel like I've already used up so many ideas in the past... fancy scotch, fancy cufflinks, photobook, etc. etc. I am drawing a blank, I usually have tons of ideas! Can't be a trip because too much money and vacation time involved and we just went on our honeymoon a couple months ago. I also haven't found tickets to any sporting event or music event that he'd be interested in.
If you have any ideas for special/unique gifts that I might not be thinking of, please share... I'm desperate!
