What are your other colors or other flowers?
I used the hydrangeas more as accent flowers and always had them mixed in with other things. For the centerpieces we had smaller sunflowers and even some of those decorative peppers, for the bouquets we had sunflowers or orange callas, but really whatever you mix them wtih is good. They're really great accent flowers.
For centerpieces were using them with lemons in the vases and maybe some twigs. Were using blue hydrangeas...I think they're beautiful but not too girly...if you ask me a girly flower would be something like a peony which I dont like too much!
@bvig: I definitely know I know I want green, but then I'm kind of going back and forth between blue, yellow, or brown as the other color (lol, i know, i know....)
@dmarie: i really like the lemon idea...that'd be fun.
do you guys have any pictures or links?
I am planning on stuffing 2 stems into small square vases and wrapping a ribbon around it. I like the poofy of the flowers, and the squatness of the vases. They also look lovely when 2-3 stems are placed in a tall vase. They are very elegant and simple I think. Google-image search it! There's lots of good ideas when you search hydrangea centerpeices or bouquets.
For bouquets, I am just going to gather a few stems up in a messy way and keep them in place w/ a robbon or something. They look really good messy. If you have them too tight together, they all blend together and form a ball shape.. which looks unnatural in my opinion. For boutoniers, I will most likely cut off a few single flowers and use some floral tape, so those will be simple.
I think I am going to get fake ones.. A florist told me that live ones are $6-7 per stem! I know that the fake ones are the same price, or even more expensive, but I wasn't expecting to pay that much for flowers that grow in abundance in my area, when they are perfectly in season. (she actually told me that ROSES are cheaper!!)
So my colors don't really seem to be along the same lines but just pictures of how they can act as accent pieces. The first pic is one of several centerpieces we had and they're just kinda mixed in with the yellow flowers. The second picture is of my bouquet and all the bridesmaids bouquets. Mine was the main one with hydrangeas and again they're just kinda used as accent pieces.
try this link...my friend went to this wedding!

I'm with you on the not wanting anything to frou-frou thing, but I found a really simple hydrangea centerpiece that will be the look I'm going for. I think it has a really modern look. There is a picture in my bio, but I'll link to it too. My bouquet will be all hydrangea with some roses mixed in and my bridesmaids will have just simple hydrangea bouquets.
how about using them with curly willows or other branches? Here are a few low examples.. HTH!

This is why I love this board! You ladies are awesome :) Just forwarded my mom some of your pictures/ideas. Thanks!!
We used green and white hydrangeas in our centerpieces (as well as moss and Manzanita trees) and in my bridesmaid bouquets and aisle decorations.

AWESOME ideas ladies. No frou-frou girly flowers here! Thanks so much :) :) :) I am totally feeling better about the hydrangea choice!
I do know that the hydrangeas have a hard time holding up in the heat once they are out of the water. But this time of year would be perfect
Yeah, thankfully it never gets too hot in Monterey...hydrangeas are ones we have to be careful about bruising, though, right? like, our finger oils will brown the petals?
I'm not sure if you've seen this, yet, but Mrs. Vino did hydrangea and greenery in wooden wine boxes for her centerpieces. They are super pretty (we're thinking about doing this, too ^_^).

lovely inspiration pics! and to OP...lol, i think flowers by nature are girly, but in a good way! =)
For the centerpieces you should be fine as long as they're in water. For the bouquets we really hydrated them and then the morning of the wedding snipped the ends at an angle and added clear nail polish to the bottom to help seal in the water. They were fine and pretty even the next day.
@blossom: do you have a pic of this? i'm having a hard time picturing it...
@ Blossoms-Floral.
I bought a centerpieces on craigslist... where they immerse flowers and put a candle on top. They used twigs and evergreens in their wedding but I want to use my hydrangeas the same way but dont' know if it will work.
Dont remember where I got these photos...just searched google and put them in my file!
I love hydrangeas! I saw a girl's pic and her bridesmaid bouquet was 2 full hydrangeas(white), and it was nice...
@Blossem flower
I found this post and it tells you how to do it. I don't know if it works with hydrangeas. I'll be testting it out for myself in a few weeks and I'll let you know.
Oh, the post to search for is "Underwater Flower Centerpieces"

I love the idea of hydrangeas because A. they're local to where I'm getting married, B. they're cheaper, and C. they come in green! They are absolutely GORGEOUS, but I'm not sure they're entirely me. A little too....girly foofy pretty? You know what I mean? Does anybody have any ideas on how to use them as centerpieces--or even bouquets--and de-girlify them? Thanks :)
