I was home alone today – had lunch and was eating a strawberry. They were really cold so I tried to chew them quickly and swallow. As soon as I chewed the last one and swallowed, I knew.
It was way too big. My throat involuntarily started trying to get it back up. It was completely lodged, I couldnt breathe at all, I couldnt reach it because it was so far down. I was gagging. I have always remained calm in very scary situations but this was super scary.
I started freaking out after a few mins of not being able to get it out or breathe. I was just thinking omg im gonna die from choking, this sucks! Lord please help me, then had to tell myself to CALM THE F DOWN! I was able to calm down a little (still choking, cant breathe and trying to think) and gather a big painful breathe and just started trying to make myself cough while giving myself the best heimleich maneuver I could. I was finally able to cough hard enough for it to come up a little, reach inside and pull it the rest of the way out.
I was so freaked out and had so much adrenaline my hands and legs were shaking. I sat down and had a pity party and cried for a min. Def scary!!!!!!!!
Remember to chew your food!!!!

@MrsRuby: I honestly had the exact same experience with a piece of pineapple in college – it is terrifying. I couldn’t breathe, I was gagging, I had tears pouring down my face, and I was starting to feel really dizzy from lack of air – finally my body forced it out (I threw up, more or less).
I have never been more scared in my entire life. I was positive I was going to die right then and there – and I am not a dramatic person!
So glad you’re okay!

omg so glad you’re okay!! This same exact thing happened to me once when I was home alone and I went through the exact same conversation in my head: “omg you’re going to die!” and then “JUST CALM DOWN”. The calming down part was key and allowed me to think through a logical solution. I still remember how scary it was. I’m so so so glad you’re okay!

Sorry this happened to you. This is actually my bestfriend’s worse fear! He’s super paranoid about being at home by himself & choking to death. I always laugh at him for this, but I guess maybe I should stop.
