Today as I was leaving my house going down the road going about 35-40mph I see an older man walking with his dog who was not on a leash. The dog sees the car coming and runs into the middle of the road running toward my car! It scared the hell out of me. I slammed on the brakes so hard, and stayed there for a second until I saw the dog running again. I was soo scared I had hit him. When I looked up to the man he was scowling at me and shaking the stick he was holding at me as if I purposely tried to hit his dog. I went from scared and worried to pissed off instantly. I love animals and would be really hurt if I had hit that dog, but the fact that the owner just let his dog run like that, and then looked at me like I’m the bad guy pissed me off.
People if you don’t know for sure your pets can walk along side you without a leash and not get into things, run toward people, or God forbid into the road always walk with a leash.
I was in disbelief. I mean am I over reacting? How would you feel?

@nellybee: You are not overreacting. It’s irresponsible of the man to walk his dog unleashed, especially since it’s now clear that he cannot adequately control his dog. Not to say that his reaction was justifiable, but some people process stress and fear differently.

@nellybee: Assuming you weren’t speeding, you did nothing wrong. The guy should have been apologetic for his dog running in front of you, and thankful that you stopped. But some people have no sense. Yeah I would be upset too in your situation. I hope you’re feeling better soon!
p.s. You also did exactly the right thing by braking rather than swerving.

Glad to hear that I’m not over reacting. I am so glad I didn’t hit the dog, and I hope that man has better sense to put his dog on a leash now that he’s seen what can happen. It was soo close, and so scary.

I would never leave my dogs with out a leash, he’s crazy! For various reasons, firstly everyone here drives crazy! Maybe upwards fifty mph in a neighborhood. Also, if his dog we’re to unintentionally injure someone by running up to them just how he did with your car he could get sued. Don’t they have laws against that? Anyways, bottom line not crazy! My dog has escaped a few times (about a handful in over a year) and if I were in his situation, I would’ve been grateful you stoppedin time and also apologetic :-/

I would be livid too! There is a leash law for a reason. And stray animals can cause the driver to swerve and seriously hurt themselves.
I LOVE dogs and I can’t even imagine how pissed I’d be if I accidently hit or killed someone’s beloved pet….I’d have to live with that the rest of my life.

@nellybee: Compared to what I would have done, I think you underreacted! I would have gotten out of the car and given the owner a piece of my mind. We get so many hit by cars in the ER it is ridiculous. Some dogs break free of the leash, but most weren’t on a leash. There was one morning I was driving home from working overnight ER and a man was walking his dog on one of those stupid retractable leashes. The man was on the sidewalk but the dog was in the middle of the road! If I hadn’t worked all night I would have gotten out and yelled at him too
