ok fellow bees i need your help! I am a plus sized gal (street size 16/18). I have been a full figured gal my whole life but just recently in the past couple years plus sized. so i keep saying i want to loose the 40lbs that i NEED to loose to be healthy. I am 5'8 and weight 227lbs..clearly not a healthy weight! now i have always weighted more than i look...i am seriously very big boned; when i was at my skinniest (junior year) I weighed 150 and a size 7-8 but my ribs stuck out and i did honestly did not eat (went through some very serious family issues). I do not want to be skinny...i want to be healthy and still full figured. Everyone always says that I look good and dont need to loose weight but to me it is not about the way i look it is my health. But...no mattter how important my health is that is not enough motivation for me when i am weak. So naturally I am using my wedding as a motivation. My wedding is June 6th and I am determined to weight 20lbs less by then!

    GOAL WEIGHTS:

    April 1, 2010-215lbs

    June 6, 2010-205lbs

    January 1, 2o11-185lbs

i am sure some of you are thinking "goal weight 185!" but if you read the sentence above that will make sense. :D

Pretty much I am posting this to make myself feel responsible, keep everyone posted on my journey and hopefully receive some advice from ppl who used to be in my situation.

so a sidebar---my sister is/was a relitivly big gal and she has recently lost 50lbs! i am very proud and happy for her bc she really needed to loose the weight but.....

she still eats whatever she wants! she eats mcdonalds and crap all the time. the only thing she changed to loose weight was she walks 2 miles on saturday and sunday and she switched to 2nd shift at work!!! that is it! so i have always been the "thinner" sister and now we are the same size. its really annoying and i know that it is awful to feel this way! it is really annoying because she does not brag about the weight but she thinks she has worked really hard and can give advice but in reality she did hardly nothing to loose weight. she was just so "lazy" before that such a slight change made a big difference. and her weight just keeps on falling off,....i dont understand;it is so not fair! i work out ATLEAST 4 times and week and eat "fat free" "low cal" "low carb" almost everything! UGH it is so frustrating.

last week we went to a bridal show and both ate a bunch a free cake and stuff and i gained almost two lbs from just that day and she still lost 2lbs that week!!!!!!!!!!! UGH! makes me want to scream. i feel awful for saying these things about my sister bc i love her SO much but it is really bothering me. if anyone has any advice to get me over this awful feeling...please share :D

Thanks in advance for all your advice and support!

Have your tried Weight Watchers?  I've lost about 15 lbs and have about 10 to go til my goal weight.  It really helps you be accountable with your eating (for me at least).

I would definitely try the weight watchers thing! I know what you mean about watching your sister lose the weight & her not really doing anything to keep it off. It IS frustrating to see people who can do that without any problem, & your sitting there working your tail off!

Best of luck to you girl, just try to only focus on yourself and no one else. Make this YOUR goal and try not to compete with your sister, because it'll only bring you down more. There are tons of girls in your situation. You can do it!

There are a lot of possibilities about your sister.  First that she does a lot that she keeps a secret because she doesn't want people to know how hard she is working, maybe she barely eats when alone etc.  Maybe she is sick (I hope not!) or really stressed out (also hope not!).  Finally if she really does eat mcdonalds and crap a lot then she is not healthy at all no matter what her weight is (which I know isn't going to make you feel better - since you want her to be healthy).  The excercise of two hours walking is wonderful though and I'm sure it wasn't easy to start doing that if she had never done it before.

Regarding your health, I am wondering do you know your cholesterol and blood pressure numbers?  Those are good indication of health and more reliable than weight. Also to get healthier you should definitely excercise and do weights (just running does not do as much good).  Also strength workouts will change your matebolism a bit and make you lose weight faster.

Finally, a lot of low fat food isn't good for you.  It might have fewer calories etc. but not good for your health, a lot of the more natural products are better.

I just recently read the book "Mastering your Metabolism" by Jillian Michaels and have completely changed the way I eat. It seems like I have been on some sort of diet since middle school and I finally realized that I need a lifestyle change not just a diet. Check out the book. Also I agree with weight watchers...I did that many years ago and am still aware about how many points I eat a day because it is much easier than counting calories and if you stay within your range, you are guarenteed to see the weight. Also, I was a diet coke ADDICT and I have completely cut artificial sweetners out because they are so bad for you....I do miss my diet coke though :( Best of Luck!

Why don't you try a workout video? That gives me exactly the motivation I need! Once it turns on I KNOW I'm dedicated to finishing it!

    i mainly d...

yoga(a dvd called yoga for whimps)

cardio-i do a 1 or 2 mile walking dvd on my days off from gym. at the gym i usually do tredmil/eliptical for 1 hour.

weight training-i only work my arms. my legs are so muscular naturally. i usually just do different things with my 5lb dumbbell...just whatever i can handle.

Honestly, i am not very organized with my workouts.

Arachna-i have a checkup this month so until then i am not sure about my cholesterol. I did have real high BP problems for a while and they took me off BC and my BP went back down. Once I got with my FI i had to get back on it and my BP is up again (but not as bad). I do monitor it.

do you have any natural products you suggest? My FI and I try to eat healthy and organic but it is hard to find around here.

I just dont know what to eat...that is a main problem of mine. See i thikn i am being good by eating ligh, diet, low carb, and low cal stuff but i guess that is not neccessarily the righ thing. I just am so confused on what i should and should not be eating.

    danielle,

It is really hard, there is so much conflicting information out there!  One thing that I've never seen disputed is vegetables are good for you!  Rice. Water. Moderation in red meat.  And cooking versus eating processed foods as much as possible.

I'm sure you've already considered all the options but I have to bring it up, have you tried/thought about different bc? maybe something nonhormonal?

I have to say, if you run for an hour on a regular basis you are pretty fit!  So go ahead and get healthier and lose weight but don't be hard on yourself. (Maybe try to up the weight from 5lbs to 10lbs?) I don't look overweight but running for an hour is really hard for me because I'm not very fit.

arachna-I do not RUN for an hour...i usually walk at an incline.:) i wish i could run for an hour.

Also I dont drink soda (maybe one a week), I dont eat out often, I dont eat redmeat (i am pretty much a vegetraian...i dont eat meat often..if i do it is chicken or turkey), I drink so much water. I dont eat enough vegies and fruits but i do eat them daily.

I think you might be right about the BC, i have been wanting to get off it for a while now but we are not ready to have children. The bc i am on now is the kind that is low hormal and is supposed to help with BP and weight gain issues.

Also....I must admit that my weakness is desert..especially chocolate. I prob eat, on average, one desert a day. usually some type of "diet desert" but still a desert. I am sure this is my problem. I just have such an unhealthy relationship with food...i ALWAYS have.

OMG Danielle, you have described me perfectly! Im about 2" shorter and 2lbs heavier but the rest is the same. I am very shapely and people assume that I am not overweight because I carry my weight well. I would Ideally like to be 180-185lbs again too. I gained 55lbs since I started college almost 4 years ago and I need to find a way to reverse this, pronto. I have also considered weight watchers but I am slightly embarred too! Maybe we can motivate each other and hold one another accountable. I have changed my eating habits but Im still not seeing any changes in weight :-( I think I need to up the anti on working out. A personal trainer may be in my future! I wish you the best of luck on obtaining your goal and it is definately possible!

Hmm, seeing that I'd try eating some red meat and really work on finding dessert that you like that is healthy.  Like find a type of fruit that you love or red bean paste (not sure how healthy that is), experiment and research.  :)

With your work out do you have a goal you are working towards?  Not weight wise, but if you're running for ten minutes are you working to be able to run for half an hour or working to using bigger weights, doing more crunches in a sitting etc.  That can be a good way to motivate yourself and see the progress you are making.

Hey girl I had a chat with a personal trainer at my gym today and he said one of the most important things is increasing your metabolism! He said you should always eat within 1hr of waking up and then every 2hrs after that until bedtime... like this
    breakfast
    snack
    lunch
    snack
    dinner
small snack about an hour before bedtime
He said if you combine those eating habits with weight training you can burn like an extra 500cals a day b.c your body will constantly be working. That's 3500 a week! Plus the burn you're getting from your cardio and you'll be set!
He said weight loss is 50% weight training 40% diet and 10% cardio.
He gave me a bunch of extra info about diet and stuff if you want me to send it pm me!
Good luck girl we're rooting for you :)

You can probably get a free assesment with a personal trainer at your gym. (Or at a new gym) most places have a free assesment. Then they will recommend what you should do to reach your goal.

I do both weight watchers and work with a trainer once a week.

There is another great rpogram that you can do.. Take Shape for Life.. I tried that program when I was at my biggest and i lost 12 pounds in a month.. They food is not that great, and you will feel hungry at times... but the results are great.. if you do the program and atleast some cardio at the gym or just at home you will reach your goal faster than you think.

Good luck girl! Hope you stay motivated and dedicated!

P.S. You should soo not be embarrassed to do any programs! All your friends will be jealous of you once you start losing weight!

I dont feel comfortable talking to anyone at my gym. all the personal trainers are 20 year old body builders and the owner is a 30 year old gossip barbie doll with fake boobs (i dont trust her or feel comfortable with her). But thankfully Bella13 was nice enough to share :D

Sinista-i heart that was a scam did you have any problems? i dont think that is a good option for me. i need to change my way of life and teach myself to have a healthy relationship with food.

I totally agree with you a lot of the trainers seems totally full of themselves! We get one free session at my gym so I decided to utilize it and went with a friend. He was totally nice and helpful until he realized we didn't have the money to continue into more sessions. We just wanted advice on how to be successful, but once he realized he wasn't going to be making $ off of us it was basically "Bye, have a nice day" jerk! BUT I did walk out with lots of diet and food knowledge which I'm happy about :)

I agree with others who have talked about this being a lifestyle change... take the time to learn about nutrition rather than fad diets, so that you can know what to eat when. I'm a vegetarian, too, and one thing I've found is that it's next to impossible to get the nutrients and protein you need by eating out/TV dinners. I'm sure that's true for almost everyone, but it's especially true for those of us who don't eat meat.

If you make yourself a recipe book of healthy recipes to try out, you can make some in advance and freeze them to bring to work, heat up after a long day, etc. My rule of thumb is that if it's healthy, fresh ingredients I don't really have to worry about overeating - I fill up naturally. Processed foods, on the other hand, usually leave me feeling hungry.

If you pair that with a workout plan where you're pushing yourself a little beyond what's comfortable - even if it's just three or four days a week for half an hour at a time - you should start to see results. Good luck!

@ Danielle you know what to be honest with you this program is not a scam.. trust me I do not work for them! haha.. My friend was starting a business with Take Shape for Life (she stopped cause she got a different job) and she wanted me to try it.. So i did.. It works.. it really does.. but the only problem is that the portions ( just like with any diet) are very small.. but if you drink water with each portion it will hold you over for two hours which is perfect. Another downside to the program is that it cost $200 dollars for a month ( but so does any other program).. Six more of my firends tried it for a month they all lost from 12-25 pounds in one month! You just really need to stick with the program..

Honestly if you want to lose the weight its a very effective program and results are great.. if you think you can lose weight some other way please go for it.. and ill give you all the motivation that you need! Just aways picture success no matter how hard things may seem!!

    Best of luck!!!

thanks sinitsa! I looked more into this and it does sounds promising but i have a feeling that i will fail. i know that sounds pathetic but this type of thing is just not for me...i dont have enough wil power for that yet. That would be way too of a drastic change. but thank you for your suggestions.

Price does not matter to me; this is my health and my life so i have decided not to worry about cost. I did do la weight loss (cost me about $1000) about 2 years ago and lost 30lbs but they all suddenly closed and i no longer had access to their foods and support and i have gained back 15lbs since. ugh...
