I hear you. It's been 1.5 years for me now, with just a part-time job. I'm desperately happy that a potential called a least one reference yesterday, hoping (yet again) this will be the one. Hang in there. PM if you need to vent or want support. Some days are bad, some are good.
And my personal top annoyance is writing the thank you letter!
I'm so sorry. Fingers crossed you won't be laid off, and if so, that something better will come along. I agree. Job searching is the WORST.
I feel bad for you. Is it bad that I have been waiting for my company to lay us off? We have been going down for a while now. I have been working for 5 years with them and am really really not liking it at all. I feel like I want a little break to rejuvenate which I really really really need. I know you probably think I don't appreciate what I have. Sorry.
I'm sorry. That's an awful thing to have to think about. As others have said, I hope it doesn't happen but sending good thoughts...
:( Sorry dear. You'll find something else if they do decide to lay you off. It might take some time and some sacrifices...but you'll get there! My mom just got layed off last year...her company closed. She was there for over 15 years and had a top management position! She recently found another job making decent money. :) It just takes perseverence...and a lot of it!
Thanks guys, I'm really feeling down on myself right now. Maybe I can grab lunch or happy hour with my coworkers- I bet we're all feeling down. I brought in cupcakes from Sprinkles yesterday, that definitely improved the mood.
The COO has personally reassured me that since I am their ONLY business analyst in the company, they'd try to keep me on if they could. This helps, but it's no gurantee.
@kay01: best of luck with your job hunt! I am ok with the thank you letters, but they are EASY to forget.
@Carolyn72: I've also been in that boat- my last job was so horrible I was practically praying to get downsized. I'm not really the type of person to sit still when I'm unhappy though, which....lead me here, actually.
Hey, if the COO himself told you personally that he will try to keep you on, at least you have a chance. And even if he does have to lay you off, the fact that he was trying to keep you on is good - you can use him as a reference for your next job or he would probably be willing to hire you back once he can. At least it's not so dismal!
Sprinkles=Good:) Job-hunting=Big Drag:( I know what you mean about those cover letters, it's sooo exhausting trying to figure out what to say and tailoring each one to each position. Blech. So I hope you are wrong (COO is on your side at least) but prepare for the worst and hope for the best and keep Sprinkles on speed dial:)
I think I know who you might work for. Is the contract you're talking about a big ICE contract, about $40 mil? If so, my husband works for the same company (Northern VA office) and came home last night telling me they're laying off about 1500 people in California, Texas and some other state, maybe Georgia. It sucks. :(
Thanks guys. I guess what sucks the most is that this company has so many good people. The COO is wonderful (female! lol everyone assumes COOs are male) and my boss is really the best I've ever had.
@ohheavenlyday: Nope, not the same contract. We are a "small" company of 140 people and this was a $14 mil contract (1/2 of all of our business!) for Army family programs. We have to let go of 70 people...our small office is about to get smaller. I'm sorry to hear about your husband's work- a lot of large government contractors are really getting screwed over by the new small business set-aside policies that the government put into affect earlier this year.
Ugg I'm so sorry! There are some major economic problems going on on this country and I've never had so much trouble finding a job!
I gave up, sold my car, and just stay at home. I save more money than taking a crap job , that only pays for gas and car insurance . I know thats not an option for many but just to put into perspective for you how crazy things are for everyone!
I hate my resume too :) My degree and experience seem useless. and its frusterating being rejected.
I'm hoping for the best! Perhaps you won't get laid off!
(((((((((hugs))))))))))) That really really sucks hon. I'm sorry!!!
@Miss Burgundy: If it were just one thank you, I'd be ok, but the type of places I've interviewed at I meet ~5-6 people in one day. Try thinking of 5-6 different way to say thank you, that mentions something unique discussed at each interview!
The COO comment is promising though, so hang in there. I'm sure they can tell who is truly happy to work there and wants to stay.
Oh, ouch. I have to admit, it's a tense time to be in defense contracting, with so many budget cuts for defense.
I'm so sorry! I was laid off last April and worked part time for a little over a year and I know how tough it can be :( My thoughts are with you!
@Miss Burgundy: I'm so sorry :( From the sound of it, there may be a good chance you are staying, so try not to think toooo many steps ahead for now, ok?
Hugs!
Oh that is so scary! I hope everything works out for you.
Sorry to hear, I was laid off last December and spent the next few months searching and searching...it was hard, but I lucked out with this company in March....keep your hopes up and get as much recommendation letters as you can so that you can shine in your upcoming interviews....if you do get laid off that is...Keeping my fingers crossed you don't.

I am on my third job this year, and finally found one I like. I love my coworkers, really love my work, and just couldn't be happier really. Unfortunately, the company lost a really, really big contract (we're in defense contracting, this one contract accounted for 60% of our business) and they are going to have to lay off about half the company. I work on this contract, and my chances of staying on are not good.
I am just SO sick of looking for a job. Out of the past 12 months, I've spent 8 of those looking for a job. I hate writing cover letters, I hate my resume, I hate the interviews, I HATE this whole process.
ughh.
