Urban Decay sells a primer that is for your face and another that is for your eyelids which si supposed to work awesome, i am planning on using this and doing my makeup also.
If you go to MAC in Nordstroms they only charge $50 and you can redeem that in product!
Go for it! I did my own makeup and I think it lasted pretty long. I used HD foundation and concealer (I believe I used Smashbox's HD line). I also used the mineral veil powder (white translucent powder that you put on top of your face at the end). I think that is supposed to take the shine off, and it helps seal everything in too. If you look back through Miss Rainbow's posts she did some great makeup posts and she talked about how to get that mineral veil powder for much less than the $40 that Sephora charges for like 0.5 ounces.
Anyways, go to Sephora and get their free wedding consultation. Tell them you need to look good in photos and they will most likely do your consultation with the HD makeup. If you like how it turns out and lasts then go and buy that stuff!
1) ok, this is going to sound VERY strange, but use Monistat as a primer. It's far cheaper and does the job fine
2) once you've done your makeup, use hairspray on your face. Again, a bit strange, but it does work
After two bad makeup trials, I decided to do my own makeup. I'm still researching it, but here's what I've found so far:
1. A good primer is essential. I just ordered Smashbox's photo finish primer. It was $30 off of Ebay but is supposed to be a key piece in a flawless face.
2. I'm not using anything with SPF. Apparently it makes your face look shiny in pictures.
3. I'm buying blotting sheets. I found the name of a Japanese line somewhere, and plan on ordering online. Apparently some are a lot better than others.
4. I am using high-quality makeup (Laura Mercier)
5. I'm using a matte powder finish
6. I've already been in once, and will go in again at least once or twice for makeup lessons at Nordstroms (MAC and Laura Mercier). I always ask for the makeup manager for that line - they really know what they're doing. And, I plan on testing it out a few times before the actual day, under the same circumstances of the wedding day.
I'm interested in hearing what else you come up with. I need all the tips that I can get as well!
so makeup artists just use products we could buy, right? Therefore..if using the right product it should stay on as long? I know airbrush stays on long, but the only reason I would pay more money for a makeup artists is to have it stay put..I know how to do makeup, just not stay put..if there are products that will make it stay put, I will def. save the $$ and do it on my own.
You should read Miss Rainbow's blog. She's a makeup artist and she posted couple blogs on doing your own makeup. She gives great tips!! (including what you can use as a primer...you'll be surprised...)
A good way to give your eyes some pop that will last and is super easy: fake lashes!! They instantly make your eyes stand out and is a must for your wedding, or at least I think so :)
I second the Smashbox HD Primer of MUF HD primer. That stuff makes everything go on smooth.
The Smashbox primer is awesome. I bought some to start practicing and you makeup stays on all day. I also got the Urban decay eyeshadow primer and your eyeshadow will stay on till u take it off. I didn't think these products could make that much of a difference but they really do. I hooked now :). I also got some really good stay put black eyeliner from MAC. They call it engraved because it stays put so well. good luck! I'm doing my own makeup too!
this is how I did my eyes for my brothers wedding...prob do something along this line.....those are my real lashes, and am undecided about fake lashes..they seem like they would irritate me.
OMG I would KILL for your lashes, your eyes look so pretty! As far as the lashes, eh nahh. Unless you are allergic or sensitive to the glue, they shouldnt be a problem. Youll def notice you have them on but you get used to them. Lifesavers, especially for pics. GORGEOUS eyes, though :)
hmm.... I am going to go to a makeup counter this weekend I decided. But I do think I will still do my own makeup inevitably.
Miss Rainbow is not a blogger anymore... at least she is not on the list...
Does anyone know what happened?
I agree with goign to Sephora to get a consult. MAC also does this, but you usually have to spend $40 in product (that doesn't take much though, and their makeup is amazing!)
As for face primer, Avon makes Magix face primer. I've used MAC ($40/bottle) Smashbox ($50/bottle) and Magix is comparable and it is $14.99. It makes your makeup stay and reduces shine.
I might be in the same boat, as I got an email from my MUA this morning canceling on me! I've heard from DIY makeup brides that they learned a lot from tutorials on YouTube. I like the ones on: http://shopprep.com/tips-and-tricks/
Also, I can recommend the Photo Finish primer from Smashbox (which doesn't cost $50 per bottle):
as well as the Urban Decay eyeshadow primer that someone else mentions. It comes in a warm, shimmery beige that is pretty enough to wear alone on days when you're in a hurry:
P.S. I'm a big Bare Escentuals fan in real life, but would NOT wear it for my summer wedding as it tends to run in hot weather. I'm on the lookout for a good WATERPROOF foundation (before she quit on me, the MUA told me that she loves one made by Avon).
I think Ms. Rainbow had to change her date multiple times and put the wedding on hold for a bit for a combo of reasons.
I do know, however, that her makeup tips have made me more than confident enough to do my own. I wonder if you could ask Pengy or Mr. or Mrs. Bee if her entries were archived or something since they were UBER popular.
Key for look that lasts: Primer Primer Primer
I use Smashbox Photofinish Light, and mix it with Cetaphil moisturizer and Neutrogena foundation.
I use Two Faced eyeshadow primer for the eyes.
Top it all off with the mineral veil, which is silica spheres/powder. Coastal Scents has it for a fraction of the price as Make Up Forever or anyone else.
Just make sure you have a really good cleanser/toner combo to get it all off your face after practicing.
I use the Smashbox Photo Finish Primer to keep makeup on my face and Urban Decay Primer Potion to keep on eyeshadow. I would consider going to a makeup counter for lessons if you need help with application.
Try Model in a Bottle. Its a spray you spray on your face after your makeup is done- I would practice a few times first but it works wonderfully well for me. It is weird to think about spraying your face after you did all that work but get over the fear and try it.
Look at reviews on it via makeup alley and amazon.
If you look under the bloggers, go to "Other Bloggers" and Miss Rainbow is listed there.
thanks everyone...I gotta try some primer and better makeup it looks like.

I would prefer to do my own makeup...money plus I know what I like..I know I do it well...but what I don't know how to do is keep the makeup on....my question is , how do makeup artists get makeup to stay all day...or do only airbrush artists pull that off? any advice on getting makeup to stay is greatly appreciated ! fyi---i use inexpensive brands, like loreal and stuff. willing to upgrade for some things though.
