take it to a professional seamstress, and ask what they can do, someone with a lot of wedding gown experience. And be prepared for it to not turn out how you wanted, and then don’t be too sad by that.

Quite honestly, I would return it (or resell it if that’s not possible) and either look for a dress that’s closer to what you want, or have one custom made.

Converting it to a mermaid shouldn’t be a problem, but I’m willing to bet you will have to lose a lot of the detail in the back if you try and have it cut lower, and the alterations bill will probably be quite hefty. I would definitely question whether altering this dress was worth it over buying another or having one made.

Agreed with the PPs. Not sure the costs will be worth the changes if you can just find a gown closer to what you want.
