Is procrastination, drifting off, and inability to maintain focus/attention something that has been an issue in the past at all or is this new since talking about engagement? If it’s new, ignore and skip to the next paragraph, haha. If it’s something that’s already been an issue and the talking about engagement has just exacerbated it beyond a point you can keep under control or are used to keeping under control, you may want to consider seeing a therapist to learn skills to help you manage your attention and procrastination problems and if it’s something you think worth talking to a doctor about, make an appointment and discuss these issues with them.
If it’s a new issue and kind of an excitement making you easily distracted deal, try setting a block of time each day (how many hours the block of time should be is a judgment call for you based on your course load) that you will spend that time working on school assignments, papers and studying ONLY. During that time, shut your phone off, get rid of distractions you might have around. Bridal magazines? Put them away, off limits during the time you blocked. Anything that might set your brain into wedding planning mode or engagement mode, hide it if you can. Computer use is inevetible but there are add-ons/extensions for your browser that you set a timer for and they’ll block you from accessing certain tempting sites for that time and then stop when time is up. FocalFilter and I-AM-STUDYING BLOCKER are a couple popular ones.
Make a list of things you’ve been procrastinating and also other assignments you haven’t been procrastinating but you know you need to get a start on. Buy a cheap day planner (you could use your phone or whatever but I’ve found having a paper day planner works for me best, to me it feels more rewarding to mark something out physically and see things continue to get marked out) and if it’s broken down into hours each day, mark the start and finish time you are blocking out for studying and school assignments, if it isn’t, just assume that what you write is for that blocked time. Write down the procrastinated assignments first into a managable period of time to finish by the due dates, then other assignments. As you get more, keep doing this.
During your studying blocks, give yourself 5-10 minutes every hour to walk around, stretch, get a snack or drink and give your mind a little break.
The first week of doing that, give yourself a little reward each day you do it. After that, at the end of the week.
I should mention, eliminating distractions varies a lot person to person. I like listening to music, it helps keep me focused because then I don’t hear other just odds and ends noises that make distract me for a moment. I also like having a little porcupine ball or koosh ball to fidget with while reading/studying. I’m a huge fidgeter and that helps a lot.
Hope maybe some of that is helpful. :p Good luck!
