Aww, that is so sweet of you to even revisit such an old post! It was by far one of the best decisions we ever made in regards to our wedding; I know for certain you will think so, too. This has come up a few times over the years; Mrs. Cookie also switched photographers and she was so happy she did (and even got published in a magazine!).
I can't wait to see how your pics come out!!! :)
Glad you had you got your photographer! its def worthwhile to get one you like!
@ Penguin: I'll have to check out her story! Funny thing, I made FI read your post last night. He was like this is great, but I'm the non-confrontational one, so you have to fire him. Lol :)
I am having second doubts (and third and fourth) about our photographers. My best friend used them and loved and they were nice enough at her wedding, so I just hired them and barely looked at anyone else. Then we had our engagement shoot and I am not thrilled with our pictures, there are a few good ones, but overall, no bueno. I realized after that that they were great for my friend, but not the best fit for me and my FI.
Unfortunately, our deposit with them was 50%, too much money for us to eat it and go find someone else -- but I dearly wish we could! Right now it's my only wedding planning regret, but hopefully we still get some great wedding pics (they aren't bad photographers, they just aren't necessarily a good fit).
Good for you for trusting your gut and making the switch!
@BlueShoes2 haha nice!!! But sad for you. I hate to be the one to break the bad news!
Here is Mrs. Cookie's story: http://www.weddingbee.com/2008/07/22/and-that-is-how-the-cookie-crumbled/
... and if you caught her recaps she made a WONDERFUL decision. Her pics were amazing!
@ccrane @msmonicka: Thanks for your support :)
@ladyox: That's exactly what happened to us... one of my bridesmaids referred me to them because they photographed her brother's wedding. I'm really sorry your deposit was so big :( I'm sure you will still have some great pictures though, since they're not bad photogs!
I am so glad that you got to hire your dream photographer! If you ever feel uncomfortable about any aspect of your wedding, is best to change it than to have these doubts, because they will only serve to eat at you every change they can get. You have to feel comfortable, and I think that is the most important thing besides the love that you and your FI share with one another.

FI and I have had doubts about our wedding photographers for a long time. I hired them in a rush, because they were a good deal, and before I really knew what I wanted out of them. Their work is technically fine, but it's posed, very formal and super traditional. No getting ready shots, no detail shots, nothing photojournalistic. They actually do more portrait work than weddings... something I didn't realize.
I said I was just going to stick it out with these people. But everytime I would think about our pictures, my stomach would sink. FI was also uneasy, especially after our very posed/uncomfortable engagement shoot (we got one usable picture for our STDs). Why pay so much money for something we didn't like?
So I fired them... and we hired our dream photographer! He is awesome, to say the least! We could afford the upgrade, and it wasn't nearly as much as I had anticipated. I actually want to thank Penguin and her blog post from several years ago about how she replaced her first photographer. Reading her advice really gave me the courage to do it. :)
I am so flipping excited about getting our pictures taken; something FI and I were both dreading before. If I can offer any advice... make sure you do your homework regarding what you want out of a vendor. It cost us a $250 deposit to learn that lesson!
