It did not happen to me but I still thought I'd let you know that that is absolutely gorgeous!
I wanted a .5 carat very low set diamond and ended up with a four prong set 1.2 carat beauty. You ring is stunning by the way :)
Thank you all you lovely ladies!!! And mkathleenwhite- your ring sounds amazing! Post a pic??!
Happened to me too!
I always thought I wanted a cushion halo. I told FI this and he looked at them but didn't like them. I also only expected to get a .5-.8 carat.
He chose me a 1 carat brilliant solitare with 3 cluster side stones on either side of the main stone. He even got it custom made because he wanted a tapered band.
It's beautiful. Perfect. I wouldn't trade it for any other style! He did good, I have to confess I was very pleasantly surprised :)
Mine is way more bling-y then I would have chosen for myself... but I LOVE it!
Here it is:

Your ring is beautiful!! And, with the four-prong setting, you can have the best of both worlds, since the diamond will look square from some angles. (I wanted and have four prongs, too.)
So very pretty!
I thought for years I wanted an Asscher cut ring - diamond, Asha, whatever we could come up with, I wanted THAT CUT, as big as we could reasonably afford and set in a plain white gold band. Then when my grandma passed, my grandpa asked if my boyfriend and I would like her diamond, which is a classic round. I always thought rounds were bo-ring. But I got a little sentimental and we accepted and now I have the most perfect ring with my grandma's stone set in a band with side stones and engraving that my now-fiance picked on his own without my input. I could not have chosen it better and wouldn't trade it for anything. It's amazing.
CONGRATS to you! And yay for classic round diamonds!
Happened to me too :)
Had I seen the stock photo of my ring, I probably wouldn't have given it a second glance, and it's not what I thought I wanted but in real life it is just right. Can't imagine wearing anything else. I had also asked for a smaller carat size, as I have small hands and usually do not wear much jewelry. My partner did not comply, though it is understandable that he wanted to purchase something he was proud of. So I am still getting used to the size, since it's not what I would have picked out for myself but of course the ring is so lovely and I feel so lucky to be wearing it.
@blondebeachbride: Very beautiful, and of course it is so classic that you will love it forever!
I love it! My ring is vintagey too.
I really wanted a marquise but every setting I had ever seen was very matronly, and looked like 'old-lady' jewelry for lack of a better phrase so I decided on a halo. I was so shocked when he pulled out the MOST BEAUTIFUL marquise ring I have ever seen, it's absolutely beautiful and I would have never found it for myself because I had long ago given up and focused on round halo settings (which I love also). Here is a photo, marquise with 3 round diamonds and 2 on the band on either side. Don't you love it when our guys can prove they know us better than we know ourselves?
WOW LADIES!!!! I am sooo glad it was not just me! For some reason I feel that it is a bit more romantic to be surprised- as long as the surprise turns out great :) Nathan was looking at my ring the other night and was saying how much he loved it which makes me super happy too- and then he bought me 2 wedding bands because he loves the symetry too! lol Thank-you for all the amazing compliments on my ring- I am so very fond of it :) lol
Thank-you for the ring pix too! SO BEAUTIFUL!!
Story:
When we went to try rings in November, i told the sales lady i wanted a specific ring (which i had on) only with a diamond instead of a saphire.
"Basically i want this emerald with the trillium side stones" me
"Why?" - sales lady
"Because i love this ring"
"Noo no no no no. You love THAT ring. This is your engagement ring. Its different. You are going to love it no matter what because HE gave it to you and it means HE wants to be with you forever. Come with me, lets figure this out"
Needless to say i ended up with a princess channel setting, and later decided i love princess or asscher pave settings. LOL but i'm going to love the ring because he went out and spent the time to get it for me. And thats the important part.
My proposal was a total surprise & so was the ring, so I never actually looked at erings before that, nor did I have any expectations. Now that I have it & have been gawking at rings for over a year, I know I would have chosen a different style for myself. However, I still really love my ring- it's beautiful & special because he chose it. I wouldn't have it any other way :)
@chouette: Don't you love it when our guys can prove they know us better than we know ourselves?
I do love it! It gives me a really good feeling about the future :o)
Your ring is lovely! I normally don't care for marquis either because of the usual settings, but I think that the way your band uses different shapes on the sidestones makes it unique and modern.
I never wanted a three stone ring, ever. I wanted a solitaire or halo.
Guess what I got?

And it's perfect.
I wanted a solitaire but the FI got me a halo. I love it.

It's just perfect!
This happened to my best friend, she thought she wanted an asscher cut with a halo and instead got something else that she loves.
I gave my fiance ideas and photos of what I liked and then proceeded to tell him that if he's at the jeweler and sees something else that he loves to get that, and that I wanted something perosnal that he picked out. He ended up getting me exactly what I wanted and I LOVE it and then explained that I'm too picky and he wasn't willing to risk getting something I may not love.
I thought I wanted a roung stone, but he got me a princess cut and it's beautiful. The minute I saw it I loved it. I would never change it now.
This just happened to me on friday! and actually the one I got is very similar to yours!!
I wanted a plain 6 prong solitaire OR a round halo. Instead I got this beauty with a channel set ring. I never cared for stones in the band, but when I saw it, it was just perfect. It is so different seeing a ring in a photo than in real life..
I am a total control freak and was VERY nervous about what he would chose... I sent him many pictures of what i liked. I'm so happy he went with his gut and ignored what i had told him! LOL. I guess he knows me better than myself ;)

I thought I wanted a more modern ring, square, and stacked- my fiance got me this! A round brilliant, almost 1 carat diamond! Very tradional- and now I am in LOVE!!
Did this happen to any of you??
