I'm not a big cake person either. Everytime I go to wedding, I always see half eaten or untouched sliced pieces of cake left on the table. I didn't want this to happen at our wedding.
Sooo...80% of our display cake is fake. Only a small portion is real (it's more so for just to cut into it for pictures). We're doing a dessert party instead. There's so many options!
It's so liberating when you realize you don't care about something! This is going to save you some dollaz, I know it.
I don't like cake much, and especially not at wedding cake prices. So we served Key lime pie as our main dessert. We did have a small "grandma's cake" (instead of a groom's cake) for his grandma, who was really upset when I first told her there would be no cake.
I say, good for you - don't get sucked in by the wedding cake hype, and focus on "function" (i.e., flavor) over "form"!
I thought that until I finally came up with something I really connected with. :P Not saying it's that way for everyone, but I was all set to just have something pretty but generic with flowers and piping or something. I would have been just fine with that, but once I got the idea of making the cake reflect us and how we met, it really called to me! It was definitely not the wedding cake that people would have expected though!
I think you are seeing it just the right way though. If the look of the cake doesn't matter to you, then make it amazing tasting! :)
I LOVE cake. lol there's no way I would be able to not have a huge, delicious wedding cake at my wedding. I'd probably cry lol
@Birdie Love: I love going to weddings when the bride thinks like you!! :-) I hate when the cake looks great (how many people really give it more than a passing glance, if at all, before it's cut??) but then it tastes like crap! I'm all about taste...
That being said, one word of advice. Wedding cake bakeries like to use fondant as it's easy to decorate with and gives a nice, smooth finish; however, the taste is not very nice, IMO. If you're all about taste, go with buttercream - it still looks good (but won't have the 'smooth as glass finish') but more importantly, tastes great!!
Also, for our wedding cake, we're doing a three tiered cake but for 200 guests, that won't cut it, so most of our wedding cake that's served is going to consist of sheet cakes that are kept in the kitchen. Saved us several hundred dollars.
amen!!! we are on a budget and there are SOOO many other things id rather spend my money on!!!! Im going to go with a simple cake from Costco... don't knock it, i've heard GREAT THINGS! The only reason for the cake is for the pictures =)
Yeah, I don't care either. We're not having one, cause I care so little that I don't even want to bother with a sheet cake. Nor do I care about the cake pictures. Our buffet package already includes dessert, so people probably won't even notice! Do what works for you.
I do want a nice cake but I don't really care that much about all the fillings and flavors.. most guests don't care either and barely eat the cake. I know I'd like a chocolate cake but thats about it...
YES!! I love cake, but I can't stand eating (destroying!!) really pretty things. I do not want my cake to look like a work of art. I only want it to look delicious. And, well, taste delicious.
All those cake decorating shows on TV give me the willies... I hate watching a knife going into something that took that much effort into making! :-O
Agree!
I want my cake to look like a cake, and be eaten!
I just gave a base sort of description to my cake person, tasted it to make sure it's yummy, and am letting her go at it!
Im having a cupcake tower instead! As i looked through all the wedding cake pictures Id seen, they were all pretty but none of them "fit" the image that i had in my head (nor did i want to pay 400 or dollars for something that i wasnt feeling strongly about.)
Luckily for me, i got an old co worker to make my cupcake tower FOR FREE as a wedding present for me and FI (well i asked her to make it and when i asked about cost she said consider it a gift :] )
Mr.ND doesn't even eat cake, but I'm a cake-a-holic. However, I'm not all about chopping up a 5 tier work of art, so we'll be doing the 'mostly-fake-cake' to cut for pictures and such, and serving the secret sheet cakes.
I will also just take good photos of the cake and then if we want to do the 1 year anniversary tradition of eating the cake, I'll just ask to get one made. Year old anything eeks me out, and Mr.ND would like it even less than regular cake :-)
I don't care about our cupcake cake much either... just hope it looks cute for the pictures... I will probably eat 1 bite just for the pictures myself, I personally hate cake so I don't really care if anyone else eats it either lol.
these were one of the many i thought i certainly did not care about, but it turns out i do. a bit. i like the look of beach theme cakes, so while at first i said i will take whatever the resort gives me, i am now requesting a sandy color fondant (if not, i will be fine with white), and i am packing some seashells and a palm tree cake topper to decorate. for flavor, i was offered chocolate, vanilla or fruit. i said chocolate with no hesitation.
@littlemissmango: I know! I enjoy watching "Ace of Cakes" and marvel in the skill and talent of the cake artists, but yes, it makes me cringe too to see them cut into something that took so much time to make.
@Ree723: We went with the buttercream. FH was intrigued by the fondant but I told him that most of the time it doesn't taste too good.
I LOVE cake! Epecially my grandma's cakes (she is making ours) That is one of the things I am excited for the most :)
I didn't care about cake, flowers or decorations. Made life a lot easier.
@meliss: same here. my only care about cake is that it be cupcakes instead, i'm not a huge cake person but i LOVE cupcakes. i also am so blase when it comes to flowers.
I had the exact opposite. We were just going to do cupcakes. Then I realized. I REALLY WANTED A CAKE!!!! So now we are doing a "triple c" hour to welcome our guests (cupcakes, cigars, and cocktails) the night before. Then wedding day is CAKE CAKE CAKE!!!! Big beautiful gorgeous yummy cake!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yep we are not cake people, which is why we went w/ cupcakes! I think cupcakes are cute & they are less then buying a full on cake, so win-win for us :)
that's what i thought too and then i saw my cherry blosson cake in the baker's portfolio and i had to have it. lol.
@MrsDulce: ooooh i love and might have to steal your 'tripe c hour' idea!!! i really dont think my FI is going to give up wedding day cake w/o pouting lol, but i would love to have cupcakes, and can't really justify both!
ps - i LOVE your username. i have a sprinkle obsession..... like 45 different types in my baking cabinet haha
I love cake. I am determined to eat a whole piece at my wedding.
And then more in the hotel room after. And then some more on the plane to our honeymoon destination!
But it's awesome that you have found something that is a non-issue for you. It keeps you composed when you realize you have the power to not care about something that the wedding industry thinks YOU HAVE TO care about.
I am not a big fan of cake, but I will definitely be having it at my wedding. Instead of a big tiered cake, we are planning to have a cake buffet table. My plan at this moment is to have a small two-tiered cake to do the ceremonial cutting. Then there will be three other cakes in front of it. All different flavors. We are only certain about one flavor and that is red velvet. I plan on buttercream and very simple decorations. Either that or I may leave that up to my baker. Cake isn't that important to me.
Yeah. I can't think of a wedding i went to that had REALLY good cake. Its often mediocre at best. I didn't want that to happen at my wedding. So I really focused on finding a place that the cake tasted great! We also went for cupcakes and are going to let ppl choose their flavor of choice on the invitations. Hopefully, this way we can improve the chances of people enjoying and eating the cake.

We went for our cake tasting yesterday. I realized that I really don't care what the cake looks like. I do care about flavor and quality, but when the consultant started asking questions and giving options, I was kind of indifferent. Anyone else feel the same about the wedding cake?
