Now that I’ve ordered my dress, I’ve turned the search towards mother of the bride dresses. My mom is a size 16 and the models featured in the mother of the bride category are at least half the size of all the moms I know.
So for brides that have plus size moms, where did you get your MOB dresses? She tried some on at david’s bridal when I was there and all that glitz is not her style. I’ve seen some at dillards that I like and that’s about it. My mom doesn’t own any nice dresses so I want to get her something that she’ll really like.

I know many moms that are slim or “skinny.” Mine isnt but that doesnt mean that many are plus size.
My mom found lots of dresses to try on. We are in the NYC area so i dont know if that made a difference but many bridal salons had MOB dresses in a range of sizes. Also, check Nordstrom, Macys, Lord & Taylor, etc. It does not have to be specifically a MOB dress. It can be an evening gown also.

Mori Lee has a plus-sized line for mothers of the bride and special occasions. I found mine at a local bridal salon for my DSD’s wedding. We found my mom’s dress for my wedding at David’s Bridal. You also may want to check out special occasion dresses in plus sizes on Nordstrom.com and at stores such as Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale’s, Lord & Taylor, Macy’s or Dillard’s.

My mom is a size 2… and all of her friends are fairly slender.
Also, models are always going to be on the slimmer size. That’s just how the ad industry is. What type of style does your mom like?

@lilek22: That’s funny you say that, I just went shopping with my mom today and I had a similar problem, she’s a size 14 and is very fashion forward. She literally gagged looking at the long satin bejeweled dresses in the MOB section. She ended up buying a long-sleeved knee-length navy dress with jeweled cuffs at Neiman Marcus. She looked hot 🙂

@lilek22: My mom got her dress at Dress Barn. They had a ton of really beautiful dresses, especially if you mom isn’t looking for a lot of glitz.

@lilek22: My Mom is also a size 16! Hers was Ralph Lauren from Macy’s! There was a pretty good selection there!

Torrid has some great dresses. I’ve also gotten lucky at Ross and Forever 21, and I’m a 16/18.
And my mom is a size 4, so… she had no difficulty finding a dress.

I don’t care for such obtuse statements. My mother is thinner than I am. I wear a size 2 and she’s probably a 0 and is in fantastic shape.

@lilek22: My mother is a size 16. For both of my sisters’ weddings, she didn’t like anything at the traditional David’s bridal/bridal salon. She ended up buying quite a few dresses at a store like TJMaxx, took them all home and tried them on in the comfort of her own home before she decided which one she liked the best. Then she returned the rest. She looked great 🙂

@jennmariee: ooh can you find a pic on the NM website? Sounds beautiful!
My mom is tiny! Probably a 2-4, not sure exactly. But regardless of size, I prefer cocktail/evening dresses from department stores and boutiques over specific MOB dresses. I think most bridal designers are way overpriced and cheap quality.

@BeeinBoston: Pretty sure she just said SHE personally did not know any Moms that slender… Not that they are non-existent. Nor did I get the impression that she was shedding a negative light on the women that are of “model” size. So, one might deem your statement to be the obtuse (and not helpful, at that) one. My goodness.
@lilek22:I would def take a look in some of the higher end department stores. Most of them will have a pretty great selection of very classic and/or contemporary styles for all shapes an sizes. I’m sure your mom will find something beautiful. Good luck!

@lilek22: This might sound odd, but my mother (age 47 and a size 16!) bought a bridesmaid dress from davids bridal. It was a long strapless dress. We took it to a seamstress and she made the hem high-low. With the cut off fabric she added cap sleeves on top. It turned out wonderful I think! ps… We are still debating on taking back her shiny shoes lol.

My mom bought two from cache online and looked amazing!
