Two recent events have convinced me of this. We’ve been dating 2 1/2 yrs and he’s always seemed like a “light weight” when it comes to drinking. (Note- we are in our early 30s and drink casually, a glass or two of wine with dinner, maybe more at parties or special occasions).
Event 1: A few weeks ago we had our close friends over. He had two beers and we were chatting on the back porch. Our Jack Russell brough him a bone to play fetch with. A real, big, heavy bone. He is sitting like three feet across from me and somehow, right in the middle of conversation manages to chuck the bone, full speed straight into my noggin! It split me open just below my eyebrow and darn near knocked me out. Fortunately my friend is an EMT and helped fix me up right there. Seriously, though. How does this happen. Had to be the booze. My guy is SUPER strong and physically coordinated normally.
Event 2: Last weekend he threw me an awesome suprise B-day party. Soooo Coool! Well he bought a bottle of Bacardi 151. I don’t think he really knew what is was. So the party is getting rowdy and they started doing shots of this icky stuff. I think only one or two a piece. An hour later everyone clears out and he and his poor mother begin to appear HORRIBLY drunk. I mean, BAD. Think of the worst sloppy mess girl you ever saw a at frat kegger times ten! Oh man, for hours they were on the ground, heaving and hurling. It was so gross! I’m thinking-HOW much did they drink? Everyone else is fine! Is this food poisoning?! These are nice, gentle people, not crazed party animals! So it was long night. They both passed out on the floor. I could not move them. I sent his poor distaught father home. In the morning they actually seemed pretty good. Minimal hangover because I think they got all the alcohol out. His mom was mortified. She had never been drunk like that before.
Soooo, end of story is I’m setting a two drink limit on both of them, I think their livers can’t handle alcohol. And he is forbidden from handling or thowing any potentially dangerous objects. He has brought home roses I think five times in the past couple of weeks. I think he feels wretched everytime he sees the bright red healing scar on my face!

It doesn’t sound like he has a problem metabolizing alcohol, just a problem managing his behavior when he’s drunk. If you have problems metabolizing alcohol (lacking the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase, common in Asian people), you get a really red face, hot, and feel sick after just one drink usually. In these cases, you don’t have problems with your behavior and usually don’t even get drunk. I would talk to your Boyfriend or Best Friend about his drinking habits and maybe see if he can try to monitor his intake. He probably drank more than you saw on those occasions, but maybe even 2 beers is sometimes too much for him. I would talk to him since these things happened within just a few weeks of each other.

Bumping to see if any other Bees have advice for you. Unfortunately I don’t have any advice for you.

@deserthoneybee: My husband threw our dog bone at my noggin recently too! Total accident but it hurt so damn bad!!!!!! He was NOT intoxicated. Lol.
I think seeing as these events are so isolated, you don’t have anything to worry about. 151 would do that to ANYONE. Shots? My esophagus hurts.

Maybe he just needs to make sure he’s eaten beforehand and keeps some snacks around? If I don’t have enough to eat booze really gets to me and I often end up tossing my cookies.

Is there a possibility he’s on prescription medications you don’t know about?

I can’t hold my liquor now that I’ve gotten older, either. I think it’s because I don’t drink as much or as often as I did when I was younger, so a little bit goes a long way. But, it’s really easy to forget that and over-do it when you are used to being able to drink more.
I don’t think you have anything to worry about.
@ChuckNorris: I know, right? Who does shots of 151 past the age of 18??? Haven’t we all learned that’s a BAD idea by now? We all have our nights, though.

Some people are allergic to alcohol. Especially common in Asians but not only them. Often the person gets red in the face.

I know I can’t drink a lot, I am (as my bf affectionately terms it) ‘a cheap date’ – one double vodka and diet coke, or a glass of white wine is enough to make me tipsy, food or no food. I know this and I’m VERY careful about the amount I drink. I’ve only ever gotten drunk once, and that was several years ago. Never again.
Perhaps you should tell him to stop drinking once he feels a bit tipsy – it’s fairly easy to know when you are at that stage (for most people I think at least)

@joya_aspera: My face gets red and HOT when I drink. My Fiance will put his hand on my face and go “Ohh my Asian Red Face girl…”
Anyways, he’s an adult. He should be able to make his own decisions, and if he ends up looking like an idiot that’s his fault, in my opinion…

I heard that people with a high muscle ratio can get drunk very very quickly – like body builders. does he work out a lot?
but yeah, some people just have low tolerance!

@bluegreenjean: Lmao, that was exactly my thought, “Who thought this was a good idea?!?!” Im about to turn 22 and I got a bottle of 151 for my 21st birthday. It hasn’t been opened. lol.

@newname_99: I think that may be it. He is a super muscle guy. Also he and his family were in this crazy strict religion until a few years ago so they just aren’t familiar with their bodys limits.
