We just received a card and check yesterday from one of DHs friends from college. He attended our wedding and we didnt even think about him not getting us anything. Well, he gave us $150 check. He really does not have the $150 to be giving to us and we feel bad cashing it. But we also know that if we didnt cash it he would be very insulted. I just feel bad! Anyone else have someone who was not in a good financial place give them something they knew was too much for them to give?

I think you just accept the gift with a smile and a thank you.
You don’t need to spend it?

I agree with PP. He is probably proud to send you that and I imagine to him, his pride is more important than 150$. Invite him over for dinner or something and spend the money on making a nice dinner or going to a baseball ggame or something?

I budget. Budget, Budget, Budget so that I can give gifts like that. I think you just need to smile and accept it. I know there was a heated thread about this a while ago, but if people give it, they want you to have it.

@bebefly: No, of course. We will gladly send him a thank you (he lives in Mass so dinner isnt really an option) but even if we deposit it we will still be spending it at some point. It was so kind for him to do this but so out of the blue.
