Oh that is terrible! I agree, USPS should have warned you about the costs to your recipients.

Okay I have some friends playing winter ball in Panama and I wanted to be nice and send them some goodies from home. I sent a small priority box of a bunch of stuff, candy and inside joke items. Fun stuff. Well all the contents and the shipping cost me around $60. It's been almost 3 weeks since I sent it and the guys just text me to say they had to pay $90 to get the package...I want to vomit! $90 for candy and crap? Really Panama? My guys don't have that kind of cash to spend on crap from home and I'm so upset that I didn't know about the taxes down there before. Shouldn't the USPS warn you about this kind of stuff? Ughhhhh! Just trying to be nice and now I feel like such a doh-doh!
