I feel so bad!

That’s a tough situation and I am sorry you are in that boat.  I have two thoughts:

1.  A company that would do this in this manner to someone isn’t a great company.  Yes, they didn’t do anything illegal (that I am aware of) but you can do unconsionable things that are still legal.  I would be wary of sinking my future into such a place, so just keep this experience in the back of your mind while you work there, be on your guard for something like this to happen again, to you.  As long as you are prepared for it, it will not be as bad as it was for her.

2. My FI was laid off this January, right after the holidays.  In the end, and I know this is a cliche, it was the best thing that could have happened for him, and for us.  He got severance and unemployment, and went back to school for another field of work.  That schooling helped him get another job in June, which is better, higher salalry and just a nicer place to work.  Being laid off isn’t always the worst thing for someone, and it sounds like she was underappreciated there.

Ugh how slimy of them. Don’t feel bad though you had nothing to do with it. It will be the best thing for her in the end. I’d never want to work at a company that would do that.  They should have explained the situation, asked her to train you and offered her a nice severance package for it.
