they raised the fees back up to fight the budget deficit. That's what the fee was a few years ago before Kindergarden Cop gave everyone the dramatic registration rebates.
Yeah, the fee was raised for registration. It is really high now. Our state is broke and broken.
400 to register your car yearly? that's horrible! I can't see the appeal of California.. Osakagrl - move to Florida - the cost of living's so much cheaper, and the weather is just as nice! :-D
Im so angry at how much they just rape us here financially and everything else. our education system is CRAP and they continue to hike up all of our fees. going from 160 to 400 in less then a year is LUDICROUS!
@ Mellisabegins
Have you ever experienced heat WITHOUT himidity?
We also have mountains!
California has a HUGE budget deficit. I remember hearing that they couldn't even pay people's tax refunds last year because they had no money.
MissAsb - YEUP! I remember that. People got "rain checks". How the HELL did we get so deep into debt? Other states dont seem to be doing as bad. I can not STAND Arnold as our governor. He is useless
I think a big problem is the foreclosures. People aren't paying their property taxes on million dollar houses so it's cutting into income. A lot of states do have budget cuts for sure just not as big as California. But California was hit the worst by the housing stuff.
I hear ya - we just registered both of our cars for 2010 and feel the same way. Seriously, if we didn't have to be in CA for work, we would hightail it out of here so fast (though I would miss year round flip-flops).
Our problems are deep and many. Economic downturn, structural budget issues, a required 2/3 majority for any spending decision, the proposition system, huge liabilities for our giant prison system, etc, etc.
Basically, we've acted like children for decades. Politicians and the public. We haven't had a sober budget in years, and the public is willing to vote for spending measures and expensive programs through the proposition system without any consideration of consequences.
Yeah, my registration doubled this year too! It's awful. I LOVE living in California, but it's starting to get ridiculous!
@melissabegins- my man is navy and we're getting relocated sometime within the next few months. We applied to 3 jobs in florida and 1 in hawaii :)
doesn't CA have a way of governing that makes it impossible to actually push legislation through? It needs a general overhaul..
@monitajb - I have been to CA, AZ, Nevada, Colorado, Utah.. I really enjoyed them all! I enjoy the heat of the desert w/out humidity, of course. Out of the western states I've visited, I like California least of those places, since I live in Florida and can visit other pretty beaches. It's def a good place to visit, though, but not live! You can live in a really bangin beach house here and toot around on a scooter for almost nothing compared to what my friends pay to live in California. Summers get pretty brutal here though, but that's ok with me b/c of the other good things. FWIW, I just got a new license, registration, name change, all of it for less than 80 bucks at the DMV, which is the original reason for this post. :-P
@bella - you may just live in Jax! If so, PM me and I'll give you the scoop :) Fingers are crossed for u in Hawaii, though!
I wouldn't blame Arnold. There hasn't been a successful California Governor in years.
The California Constitution makes the state almost ungovernable... I've heard talk that they may hold a new constitutional convention at some point. Hopefully public outrage over increased fees and taxes will result in a new constitution!
MelissaBegins - ARE YOU SERIOUS!? That is so cheap = =;;
I would totally leave CA if I didnt have so many people depending on me here.
I have family that really relies on me. otherwise i would have gotten out a while ago.
I definetely will consider it in the future some day though.
I really dont have much faith that CA will get much better anytime soon
I was expecting a huge registration fee this year. My registration is due in April and last year it was like $180. Everyone after me (same year car, etc) was getting these huge registration fees so I figured I would get hit pretty bad this year. I guess I got lucky because my registration was only $116 this year :/
But I do owe the state of CA $1 for my taxes :p
oh my god, that fee is really damn expensive! SO glad I'm moving out of state before my registration expires ;)
Mr. Bee is right - the problems are hard-wired into the state constitution. Years of propositions earmarking money, restricting taxes, and making it impossible to legislate around rules made by referendum mean that we're screwed until the underlying mode of government gets fixed.
Until then, they're going to hike up every tax and fee they legally can, and cut every program that can be cut without voter approval.
That sucks! I'm worried about getting my tax refund because of the states deficit. Try eating eggs in addition to the broth for a little extra nutrition. FI and I are eating lots of those right now to save $ for an extra day on the honeymoon.
Yep, my registration went up a bunch as well. And the DMV should mail you your annual renewal, but it's also up to you to check to see when things are due. I'm surprised he hadn't gotten pulled over. My tags got hung up one year because I lost the smog check form even though I paid my registration. I ended up with a fix-it ticket because I got pulled over for out of date tags. It would've been a worse ticket but he called in and found out I was all paid up.
One year I didn't get my license renewal in the mail, so I found the form on their ewbsite and sent it in myself. Never got anything back from them, but then I tried to change my car insurance and found out I was driving with a suspended license due to an identity theft issue. I eventually got it all straightened out, but it would've been nice for them to reply to my renewal request with a "sorry, we don't renew suspended licenses" so I could've done something about it sooner.

So, my boy went into the local DMV to pay his registration fee. he noticed his tags expired but we never received a letter. he went in to check out what was going on.
and then they slapped us with a 400.00 Registration fee and thats WITHOUT PENALTY! They tried to make us pay a 300.00 penalty until we explained the situation and they took off the fee!
BUT COME ON! Our fee last year was 160. and now 400 ?!?!?!?! WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON WITH CA?!?!?
We literally are completely drained of money. we are so poor because of that fee that we are seriously living off of onions and chicken broth, its so frusturating! We will recover and be back to normal next month but I am just so STRESSED!
We are behind on our phone bill because of this and unable to get groceries.
This is just so ridiculous. Sorry, I just had to rant
