Oh my goodness! I feel so fortunate to have been able to find such a gorgeous designer dress at a reasonable price! Its by no means cheap at $1200 but I think its totally worth it. It just so dreamy, airy, and gorgeous. Please let me know what you Bees think.

The only problem is I'm 5'3 and this dress is very very long.  Alterations for this dress almost seemed like mission impossible for the consultants at Davids Bridal.  They were suggesting to do little pick-ups to shorten the dress because theres no way to hem the bottom since the top "flange or swirls" of the skirt is connected to the bottom. That would subsequently make the dress a little fuller which I'm not sure I want.  They said they might be able to raise the waist but that it might compromise the style of the dress and they wouldn't recommend it. I totally would love the waist to be raised because I'd like the torso area to be a little shorter.  What do you guys think? Has anyone had a similar dress (like the Vera Wang Diana) shorterned? And how was it done?

Anyway, back to the celebrating. Ahhhh! I'm so in love with this dress! I have tons of pictures in it so let me know if you want to see them. I just didn't want to overpost and wanted to keep my head out of the shot for this public post.

It's gorgeous! It's the one modeled after Chelsea Clinton's dress, right? I have no insight into how to alter it, but it is gorgeous!

Love this one! I would have tried it on if it had been available when I was shopping

I definitely think you could raise the waist and or the bodice a bit. Since you're shorter that would be more flattering to the petite frame anyway. Do they not sell it in petite?

There ought to be some sort of communication between David's Bridal-Vera Wang and their alterations departments. If they're unable to make alterations work then they should provide other options. Their whole job is to make the dress you spend money on fit your body. You're not asking for something out of the ordinary so I think you should go to them and ask them to contact their higher ups for guidance. It's such a beautiful dress that I'm certain their going to have to learn to make it work. Saying only brides who are 5'9" can wear a dress is ridiculous.

@kala_way: Thanks Kala! That was an extremely helpful post! I think I will also go to another Davids Bridal to see if their alterations department has more ideas and then ask them to contact their higher ups!

I know! I wish I was 5'9 so I could save some moolah on alterations! haha. What dress did you end up going with?

Take the dress to independent seamstresses. Db is notorious for overpriced alterations and not being as willing to alter / make large changes.

Look into the yellowpages for someone who specializes in altering gowns.. get quotes from multiple places.. in this economy finding someone who's going to do a great job for a decent price should be a piece of cake! goodluck!!

yeah, i agree that you should go elsewhere for ideas on alterations.  Else, just wear really high heels? lol. the dress is absolutely BEAUTIFUL though!! i'm so glad you found your dream dress!! also, maybe consider making the skirt fuller with an underskirt, so it's not dragging on the ground too? (just an idea i learned from SYTTD haha).

I LOVE that dress!!  It looks fantastic on you!  I wouldn't alter it to make the waist higher.  Maybe just add a sash if you want the torso to appear shorter.  I agree about taking it to another place to be altered.  I'm sure it can be hemmed somehow.

That is a beautiful dress! It's seriously gorgeous.

And btw, I'm 5'9 and had to get 4 inches added ON to my dress, so don't feel bad. ;)

I have a gown and went thru barbed wire to get it but I want sooo bad to try this dress on!!!  I would add an awesome crystal belt from etsy to it just for some added pop!!  It's beautiful!  Take this pic to a seamstress for advice about how to alter the hemline, a good one should know...

Looks AMAZING on you!! POST MORE PICS! Would love to see more :) I was going to try this dress on next week but i am only 4'11'' soooooo it probably won't work for me...I would have thought Vera would offere petite sizes or hollow to hem like most of the other designers i've tried.

Hi I figured I would put my two cents in. I tried on a dress like this (the bottom was identical), but it was by sottero & midgley and I had the opposite problem, I'm too tall (I'm 5'11". The dress I tried on was about 1-2 sizes too small and was about a 1/2 inch off the ground and I was concerned about it being long enough. I didn't come with extra length. They said that they could add an extra strip of fabric to the bottom, but when the alterations lady came out she was like, "how would they hem this dress?" It was $1990, I didn't take the chance, it was more than I wanted to spend, but my mom would have gotten it for me if I liked it enough, but I didn't want to take the risk. They did think that the right size would have dropped the dress to the floor, but, again, I didn't risk it.

    Good Luck!

My advice is to take it to an expert alterations person, outside of David's.  I was NOT impressed with the DB alterations people (in MA) and after they did some weird things to the dress, I took it to an independant tailor who made it right.  You should NOT put pick-up's in the bottom of this dress, IMO.  And you should NOT raise the waist.  I fully believe a more "expert" tailor can fix this dress for your height and not compromise the style.  If Vera didn't put pick-up's in the original, I would not let a DB alterations person put pick-up's in it now!!!!  That's my two cents. :)

Ok, we just did our training on this the other day! Vera made the dresses longer than our usual dresses and can even special order length, but never ever mentioned petites. Since the stores have only had the dresses for four days they are still trying to figure out what works and what doesn't. Not only that, but we are limited on what we can do to the dresses, Vera more so than our regular. The dresses are "copyrighted" and must mantain most aspects of their design, which explains why we are not allowed to make huge changes.

Our alts lady said she would probably have to do it from the waist, but wouldn't know until she got her hands on one (we're a smaller store and won't get ours in the store until summer or fall). They are having a an alts seminar in the next few months which she's assuming will be all about these dresses. The only thing for sure I have heard Vera say as far as alts is that she hates underbustles. As far as pricing, they say it won't be anymore than regular, but lets just say our alts lady laughed while trying to tell us that.

I think even taking the dress to someone else will present a challenge because it's not like they deal with this type of dress everyday. Most of these dresses are very delicate. I've been hoping to see someone shorter with one on. Good luck and it's beautiful on you.

Thanks so much everyone for your feedback and also advice! I guess it seems the smart thing to do would be to wait until the alterations people have had some experience dealing with the dress. I definitely don't want to be the first one they experiment on! I did talk to an outside seamstress and she quoted me $480 because it was such an unusual dress and she said itd take 2 hours just to have an initial fitting. She also agreed with the route of the pick-ups, and hadn't thought of any other way to shorten it.  She said the waist could not be raised because there was no seam.  So here's hoping the alterations seminar will help sort this mess out, cause I want my dress! Thanks again so much for all of your advice and compliments!

Also, here are more pics of the dress on!

stalked your slideshow. LOVE the dress on you. i don't think you'd be overposting if you posted a bunch of pics of your dress! that's the point of weddingbee! i think if the only way is to raise the waist, you should do it. especially if you'd rather it raised anyways. let us know what you end up doing! and post the results

It's beautiful- I don't know what to do alterations wise, hopefully they come up with a solution- do they not do hollow to hem at all?

I didn't think about this problem at all- I have yet to try on dresses and I'm 5'2.5"

I read that they had to shorten these kind of dresses using lazers / lazer cutters so that the material doesn't fray - can't remember where i read that now though, sorry

omg that looks SO good on you.  I'm really excited about this collection, I actually LIKE the designs (more than I can say for a lot of dresses) AND they're budget-minded (not cheap though, mind you).

What was that first flowery dress you had on??  That one's gorgeous too!

@kmystery: I did see someone selling a dress once that was laser hemmed but I would need alot more than just one tier lasered off as its extremely long so I"m not sure how that would work. http://www.preownedweddingdresses.com/dresses/23866/Vera-Wang-Diana-Size-6.html  Thanks for your help!

@nyc new bee: Thanks! The flowery dress is a Galina Signature dress they also sell at Davids Bridal. I think its SV415. That was totally "the dress" until I found this one! And yes its the one thats advertised in pink. I tried in pink too, and it was really cute! But I definitely want ivory.

Hey Ratana, I'm sooo excited to see your post here cuz I tried on the same dress and I ordered it too!!  It will arrive on May 30th. I think this is the best dress in White by Vera Wang. I'm 5"4 and the dress was too long for me as well!  so I have a concern on alternation too! and I wondering what size are you wearing in the photo?

@MuiMui: Thats so exciting that you tried on the same dress! The smallest size they had in stock in this color was 4 so thats what I'm wearing but they had to pin it really good. I also tried a pink in size 2 and it was still too big and long.  Please tell me what you find out when you start alterations! Did they tell you anything about how they were going to shorten it when you ordered it?

I thought I had heard from another bee that they make the length based on your measurements because the dress couldn't be hemmed.  I could be wrong though of course.

Regardless, it's beautiful!  I saw it in person last week when we went flower girl dress shopping and it's gorgeous!
