That's so exciting! My job is termed Retail Financial Specialist - but it's basically a combination of a teller and customer service representative. And you know what? It's fun! I was a teller for a bit and I really enjoyed myself. At first it can be intimidating - but getting to know the customers one-on-one is the best part - trust me, you'll have your favorites!

Is it a busy bank you'll be working at?

Yes, the bank is very popular in our area but it is a credit union and very very well respected in our area. I am also looking forward to the continous customers that I will get to know by name! I am quite intimidated but I am looking forward to the challange.

Congrats! I am currently a Personal Banking Representative. Pretty much a teller but I also open accounts and credit cards and what not. It can be a great job some days, and of there are bad days as with any customer service. It is just a part time job for me while I am finishing up school....I am going into education, not banking. I hope you like it, it can be an interesting job, you will get to know regular customers, and the hours are usually pretty convenient. Good Luck!

Congrats on the job!  I was a teller for three years.  I enjoyed my job, but it was my co-workers who made the job both miserable and enjoyable.  When I first started my job I really liked all of my co-workers, but the good employees came and went and some crappy people took their places.  I tended to have supervisors who let the position and authority to their heads and just became total b!tches. I really enjoyed getting to know my customers and talking to the regulars day in and day out.  The part that I did not realize about my job at first (and yours may be nothing like this, but just a forewarning) is that there was such a large sales aspect involved.  I was made aware of a sales goal upon first interviewing for the job which was certainly attainable - three referrals a week.  The longer I was there the larger the requirements became and the more closed sales we were required to have.  It became very stressful.  Near the end I was being required to have something like 5 referrals and 2 closed sales PER DAY.  I am not a salesman.  I did not sign up to be a salesman.  I hated that part of my job.  But all in all it was a valuable experience.

Best of luck to you and I hope you enjoy your new position.

I was a teller during the summers when I was in college, and it wasn't a bad gig at all!  My tips are:

    1) never count paper money with dry hands.  Keep some lotion around, because it's very easy to miss a bill when your hands are dry.

    2) if you have crisp, new bills, separate them with older bills.  New money likes to stick together, and you might accidentally give someone too much if you leave new bills all together.

    3) do a "quick balance" of your drawer before breaks and lunch, if you have time.  That way, if you're off at the end of the day, you'll know roughly when the problem happened.

    4) always check your checks.  By that, I mean to make sure the check is dated within the past 6 months (or if the time period is stated on the check, within that amount of time), that the check is signed, and that the back of the check is endorsed.  You'd be surprised how often people forget these things.

    4) trust your instincts.  If something feels wrong about a bill or a transaction, don't be afraid to use the "I'm new, I need to ask my supervisor something" line, and get your supervisor to verify that it's not a forged bill or a shady transaction.  Hopefully you'll get lots of training in how to identify these things, but better safe than sorry!

I hope this helps, and good luck to you!

Congrats!  I was a teller for 3 years.  Advice I can give you... Triple count your money... Count it as you take it out of the drawer, count it again once you have it out of the drawer, then count it back to the customer.  You'll reduce your liklihood of being short.  Keep a cool head and don't let people yelling at you ruin your day, because it will happen... oh, and use lots of hand sanitizer :)  I enjoyed being a bank teller for the most part, like all jobs, it has it's ups and downs.  Congrats again!

Those are great tips, HL and Blueshoes2.  The most important things I kept at my desk were hand sanitizer (people and money are just disgusting) and those clorox disinfectant wipes.  I used to use hand sanitizer inbetween EVERY customer.  Maybe I'm a bit of a germ-a-phobe; my hands got flaky they were so dry, but at least I didn't get their germs!
