I was just about to turn off my computer and leave work when I got a message in my facebook inbox. It was from my ex who I haven’t spoken to in years. My heart started pounding because all I could see before I opened the message was “I’m really sorry to have to tell you this…”
The short version is that he found out back when we were dating (over 6 years ago) that he had an STI. Never told me. Took medication for it and thought it was all good. But he’s recently married and has been having trouble TTC. Went to the doctor and found the Ureaplasma never did go away. His doc informed him to inform all his past partners…me being one of them. He said that if we’ve been trying to have a baby, and can’t, this could be why.
My husband and I have not been “trying” but I’ve always had this weird feeling that I couldn’t have a baby. I’m just so devastated. As soon as I came home, I burst into tears and told my husband about the message. He just held me while I cried and said let’s wait to see what the test results say and told me he loved me and to take it one step at a time.
Thank goodness for my husband being who he is. I’ve made an appointment to get tested and if it’s positive, hopefully start treatment right away. Of course, I really hope it’s negative.
So I turn to the Bee – has anyone had this STI? Has it affected your fertility? I can’t seem to find a good website that will answer all my questions until I get to the doctor.

I haven’t had this, but I read your post and just wanted to give you some words of support. Hang in there. Wait and see what happens with treatment.

I’m so sorry!
I really hope your results are negative and it all works out, hugs!

first, ((hugs)), I’m so sorry you are going through this. It must be so difficult to receive this kind of unexpected message. I don’t have any experience with having an STI, but it sounds like you have amazing support in your husband! Try to stary as calm as you can before you go to the doctor and wait for the test results. I’m sure this is very scary, but if this is something that will make it difficult in TTC, you at least know what the cause is and your doctor can properly treat you rather than spending time seraching for a cause. Keep us updated and know that I am sending positive thoughts and prayers your way!

@ProfessorGirl: Thank you. It’s so scary because apparently there are no symptoms and I’ve been tested a couple times for STI’s so I thought I was in the clear.
@Happy Hopeful Bee: Thank you 🙂
@Aggie10: Thanks for your message, I will keep you posted.

Try to stay away from Dr. Google, also! That never helped anyone who is “waiting” for results to come in. Worry after you know for certain, and plan accordingly.

I am so sorry. I can only imagine how hard this is. I have never had a STI, but I have had my share of poor partner selection (cheating exes) and have been tested for everything under the book. What my doctor told me was that when most doctors test, they do the full screening, so you should have known. Also, if you took antibiotics in the past, it might have killed it if you had it. Finally, the STD won’t cause infertility, it is the pelvic inflammatory disease that stems from it. Your doctor should have picked that up in paps. Please update us when you get results!
Also, a good friend from high school just announced she is pregnant, after 2 years of trying. She had PID from an STI in high school. It isn’t the end of the world.

Wow. That is so sad. I hope everything will be ok!

@Ryansgirl: I’m so sorry – I don’t know much about it, but what a blow to you guys! My best advice would be not to panic and wait until your test results come back.. and at least your ex had the decency to come forward & warn you guys once he knew. There are a lot of people out there who don’t. Good luck hon! x

Oh my gosh, I am so sorry… =( I just wanted to extend my love, unfortunately I have never heard of this. =(

Should your husband get tested, too? Good luck with everything, I’ll keep you in my thoughts!

No experience but just wanted to send you support hanging in there until the results come in.

Hoping you get good results back. Try to breathe until you see the doctor, easier said than done I know. Good thoughts going your way.

@Ryansgirl: I was diagnosed with mycoplasma, Dr google says its the same thing. 1 dose ofantibiotics cleared it up. I got pregnant the next cycle but had a chemical pg. My dr told me that it’s not necessarily an std- they’ve found it in kids who have never had sexual contact. My husband wasn’t prescribed anything.
They don’t test you for mycoplasma/ureaplasma in a standard std screen bc there a bunch of types and no cost effective way to type them. Some are completely harMless.
Also, it’s really scary to hear that you it…but a treatable std that causes no lasting impact to your fertility is not that the end of the world. You will be fine. It could be much worse!
