My dad set aside $3,000 for our wedding and with our huge family our guest list is just over 100, so the money is going fast. Is anyone in the Wisconsin Fox Valley area that had wonderful pictures done for less than a small fortune? I was scared to show my dad how much it actually costs to have a photographer for a few hours with the smallest package they offer. Help please!

You might have the best luck trying to find a local photography student. I think you’ll have a hard time finding a professional for under 1k, probably even 1.5k. Do you have friends that have gotten married in the area that you could ask for advice?

My photographer was a recent graduate from photography school and she did an amazing job! She did an internship with a wedding photographer so had an idea about what she was doing :). We paid her $1200 which is low for our area. Good luck!

I know, it’s crazy! But for the work they do it all makes sense.
@csperry2: How were you able to find her? This is probably the route we’ll go too.

We hired an associate photographer. He cost 1/2 of what the main photographer charged.

Even try searching craigslist and asking anybody and everybody you know is getting married. We were at Olive Garden one night and our waitress asked if we were engaged and we got chit chatty because she was getting married the next month. She told us her friend/fellow waitress had just started her own photography business; she had been an associate photographer for a large, respectable company and decided to set out on her own. We didn’t book her but her pictures were lovely and she was CHEAP because she was just starting out. Good luck!

Mine is $3k….I have seen some people who are just starting out with their business that charge less (maybe $1,000 – $1,500) but you will definitely have to put some trust in them or understand that they might not have as much experience shooting weddings as someone that charges more and has been doing it for a decade. Just make sure you LOVE their shooting and editing style!!

PM me with your email address. We used a *wonderful* student photographer from the UW-Madison. I can show you our pictures and give you her contact information if you’re interested. She is very talented, great to work with, and very affordable.

A lot really depends on what your expectations are. Your entire wedding budget is $3000, and if I’m right about your area the average wedding in Outagmie county WI is $23,068. That figure comes from http://www.costofwedding.com/ in case you’re wondering. In that figure the average dollar amount that goes to photography is $2117. Which if you look at national averages is lower for a professional than most major urban areas. As a full time pro it’s just hard/impossible to get ahead to shoot weddings for much less than that figure. But I’m not trying to lecture you about your budget, just putting it into perspective. If we were getting married again we could not afford ourselves. 🙂
If your date is actually December 31st I would think for your area there are probably zero weddings going on, so you may be able to find a pro willing to do it at a discounted rate just because there aren’t any weddings typically being shot in December. Another option might be to just have a pro come in for 2-3 hours. This doesn’t give you the chance to capture much, but it might be worth it to you to have really good photos of your ceremony and portraits of the two of you than it is to have it completely documented.
And there are always the student photographer/craigslist photographer routes that others have suggested. This is a big time gamble, and it’s anyone’s guess how your photos will turn out. Remember a lot of what goes into good wedding photography is having a photographer experienced in weddings who understands the pace and the flow of them. A photographer who is excellent at landscapes or portraits can fail miserably at weddings simply because the action moves too quickly.
