- Wedding: July 2011
I get a call from my step-mother on my way to work telling me that my father is in the hospital. It’s a good thing I pull over because she was talking about fluid in lungs and Congestive heart failure. She has this calm tone and I start to wonder what she’s not telling me.
I turn around and race to the hospital. I’m turned away and told I can’t see him until 11am (it was 7:30am). Fine. (Actually not but what was I going to do?) I called my brothers and told them that we were personas non gratas until then. So we sat at my younger brother’s house and waited. and waited and waited.
My dad keeps trying to leave the hospital which is why we have to stay close. In an effort to stop crying I told him that he has to stay alive for another 7 weeks and two days. (my wedding day). After that, he could jump off of a building for all I cared. My dad understood what I was trying to do and laughed. He said, “How else am I going to get out of writing that big check!” We laughed together.
The nurse however – didn’t think we were so funny. But he’s laughing. That’s a good sign. I’ll go back tomorrow to monitor his testing and hope for the best. I just feel like I have friends here. You’re all anonymous, but you’re friends.
Thanks for listening.
