We just moved to Virginia and got locked into Comcast too and I hate it. We used to have FiOs and it was SO GREAT and the Comcast guide and set up just suck, and when we got our boxes and internet, NONE OF THEM worked and a tech had to come out 2 days later to troubleshoot. On our DVR box, it will randomly just stop responding to the remote and we have to unplug the TV and box for a few seconds to kick start it again. Ugh. NOT impressed.
Just call them. Be polite and explain that you cannot afford the bill and will need to cut the service. I can almost guarantee they will place you on hold and come back and offer you the discounted rate again. My friend has lived in her apartment for the past 4 years and she has always paid the discouted rate. She also recieved a DS lite when she renewed the first year.
@JustLove: Haha I'm actually talking to them right now. I'll let you know how it goes.
Comcast is the devil, unfortunately I have to have it least for internet wise. Though work pays for it. I work from home and have to go with whatever provider work chose and it was Comcast. HATE HATE HATE them, they have turned off my net for work several times now. You know how hard it is to call their business line and to figure out why they turned me off. Computer glitch on their end, work paid for the line but comcast turned it off anyway. Which left me having to make up for lost time due their mistake
Comcast stinks buuuuut just call them and say that if they can't lower your bill you'll have to switch providers. Guarantee they knock it down.
Apple TV!
Comcast is the devil, I don't understand why or how they stay on top when they, by far, offer the worst service.
if you call and threaten to end service for financial reasons they will send you to the retention dept to hook you up with another deal. But we left comcast last year for their crappy service. Is ATT and option for you?
@Sassygrn: They do suck at making bad choices. I was moving so I called and told them to set up at my new place but that I still needed service where I was living too. They couldn't figure out how NOT to turn off my service at one of the places. Like the idea that someone would need service at 3 different places was a foreign concept.
I said I wanted them to knock down the price and they basically said, "if you lower your services we can lower your bill." Um no. I use my internet all the time. I don't want shitty internet, sorry.
Yup, call them! I tried SO HARD to cancel just my cable, not my internet, because I wanted to save money, that they lowered my bill to about the same as I would pay for cable alone. FI did the same thing at his apartment. Every 6 months when the promotion ended, he'd call and say "I'm not paying that much!" and they'd lower it :)
@MissOtter31: Thats nuts, maybe you got someone having a bad day. The last time I called they knocked my bill down $45 and gave me showtime.
Does anyone just not use cable? I don't see it really being worth the hassle. Why not just use Netflix and Hulu Plus for, like, $30 a month? Guh.
I'm sorry. Comcast blows. :( Their connection is so bad that when I lived in Atlanta the running joke was calling something "Comcastic" when it was terrible. ie "The service was Comcastic! I'm never going back there again."
I have had Comcast for 4 years and I am still on the promotional rate. Every time it ends I call them up and let them know I cannot afford the standard rates and they extend it. Try calling again, being polite and explain and hopefully it works out. I also have a bundle package internet, cable and phone and pay my bill on time every single month, not sure if that has anything to do it with it, but it doesnt hurt to try.
ARGH. They're giving me the runaround. "Call this number." So I do. "No, this is the wrong number. Call THIS number." JUST HELP ME, GOD DAMN IT.
Ugggh, we HATE Comcast too! Service is so shitty with them. We recently inquired with Direct TV about switching, and the cost was about the same. We bundle tv and internet, too. Everytime we try to call and complain, or ask for a discount, they give us like $20 off that month's bill. Woo.
The only other cable provider in our area doesn't currently service our neighborhood, though, so that sucks. (Knology, fwiw) And I keep hearing consistently good things about them and how good their service is, no problems, yada yada.
We floated the idea of Netflix, etc, but I'm still not sure how it exactly works. Like, if I just want to turn on the tube and watch something random, is that possible? Or, is everything through an ordering process? Like do I have to "order" or whatever, every single show or special or movie that we want to watch? I'm not sure, but if that's the case, it just doesn't sound like our cup of tea.
Blargh. Yeah, Comcast blows.
My mom always threatens to switch to another provider entirely. That always works for her!
Try calling and saying "You have discontinued my promotional rate and I can't afford it anymore so I'm going to switch to Dish Network who offered me ($promo rate for Dish Network in your area)." I have NEVER had a company refuse to offer me another promo when I've told them I was discontinuing service entirely.
Or how 'bout when you call the LOCAL number on the bill, to ask questions or what have you, and the call is re-routed to somewhere in Timbuktu! Wtf? Why is there even a local number, then? Doesn't happen every time, but still, often enough to be annoying.
YES. I had the same issue- got a decent promo price for 6 months, and then BAM. $70 a month just for internet. We don't even bother getting cable. It's just disgusting to me that these companies can claim monopolies over certain areas. I don't want Dish, either. And literally a mile down the road, people are able to get Verizon internet service because they technically live in a different township. Comcast made sure to usurp the college area so that they can take advantage of the students. It's just amazing to me that companies are allowed to do shit like this.
In my opinion, internet servce should be free and accessible to everyone. A lot of large cities are starting to provide free internet to it's citizens, but I think it should be a nation-wide thing. Internet is a source of information and is an integral part of participating in and gleaning knowledge in our society today. NO ONE has a right to withhold information.
omg, i hate them too. BUUUUT, they're super easy to talk down. i was in the exact situation as you missotter. all you have to do is call and tell them, "this is ridiculous, this is a 150% increase in my bill. i understand it was just a promotion, but the promotion shouldn't be this far off from its actual value." and then say something along the lines of "I'm already getting quotes from other vendors, but I'd rather save the hassle of switching if you can help me out" and theeeeeeen make up some quotes. For instance, you could say you have a friend who rents their cable box for $4 a month (I actually rent my non-HD box for that much), and he/she rents their modem for $7 (I rent mine for $8 and change). Often, they'll extend your promotion or just completely remove fees (like your box rentals). The last tactic to try is using general math. For instance, if renting your HD box is $16 a month (as they suggest) multiply that by 12 months and you get over $190. Explain to them that the value of the actual box is about half that much, and ask them if they have an option to buy the box outright rather than having to pay twice as much as it's worth per year for an indefinite period of time. They'll tell you that you can't purchase one.... but they'll also lower your box rental. I save MEGA-BUX using that last strategy.
Just so you get an idea, here's what I pay versus it's actual depicted value on the Comcast website in my area:
Comcast Premier Triple Play:
-Advertised, POST PROMOTION price: $199
-What I pay (post promotion): $119
HD/DVR Box Rental:
-Normal rental: $16 a month
-What I pay: $10 a month
Additional box rental:
-Normal rental: about $10-15 a month
-What I pay: $4 a month
Internet Modem rental:
-Normal rental: $7 a month
-What I pay: $5 a month
HBO:
-Normally: $20+ per month
-What I pay: $5 per month
Showtime:
-Normally:$25+ per month
-What I pay: $5
I love to call and complain to comcast. NEVER settle with their crappy service. Every time my cable even has a hiccup, I call and complain, and they lower the price, remove the fee for the month, or throw something at me for free. It's fabulous. They're complete pushovers, you just have to be brave enough to call-and don't settle for no!
@Wonderwoman217: Strangely enough, I did call the local office and they were like, "We can't help you. You need to call 1-888-COMCAST." So I did. Then they were like, "No. You need to call 1-800-COMCAST." ....So confusing.
@MissIcecream: I finally talked to someone helpful (thank you Corey!) and was just like, "I'm a poor college student. I cannot afford this." And he was like "whambam old promo price of $89." HOORAY COREY! :)
@MissOtter31: awesome!! it just gets harder the longer you call and ask them to extend. Ive been "extending" my promotion for....over 6 years now? lol, so they start giving me the whole "well it's a promotional period so you can TRY our services at that price and decide if you want to keep them. At this point you've tried it, if you don't think it's worth the price, I can downgrade you to another service" and then I lose it and they lower the price anyway. hahahaha
@MissIcecream: Haha. That's what the first person told me. "It's promotional. It's not supposed to be a life-long price." Yeah, well, maybe if they didn't jack the prices so much, people wouldn't want to live on the promotional prices. Meh.
Glad you got it worked out! I was on a promo package with them for 5+ years. I just finally ran out of luck and they wouldn't give us a decent price this time around, so we switched to DirecTV. All the same channels, plus more for literally less than half the price. We kept Comcast internet though. Because we would only be able to get DSL in our area with DTV.
Also, just an FYI, if anyone switches to DirecTV and you know someone who has it. Use them as a referral and you both get $10 off your bill for 10 months.
@Ms. Peach: How is DirecTV? I've heard satellite dishes can go out in bad weather, which is part of the reason why I was hesitant to get it. Plus I live in an apartment and my balcony is right behind a bunch of trees so I'm not sure how great my signal would be anyway.
@Ms. Peach: Just curious about your Comcast internet service...does it work most of the time? I have ATT DSL and it's horrible. The past few months it's been out every few days. Thanks!
@MissOtter31: Glad you got the promo price :-)
Yeah we're on verizon because it's $30 for internet and no need for TV. I would have stayed with TV a bit longer but comcast would put weird charges on our bill all the time and I got tired of calling them, they always fixed it but I always had to check up on them and then spend time on the phone. They sucked.
We've got Comcast for TV only, as we have FIOS Business at home for internet. Everytime my promo runs out I call them and tell them I want to cancel due to cost and I'll happily switch to dish.
Everytime it has worked - and actually this last time they gave me an even better deal than I was getting before, and gave it to me for a year this time.
Give it a try - it has always worked for me!
@vaness13181: Our internet is fine. It's kind of slow sometimes, but it's never gone out or anything. I have never heard anything god about DSL, so I was nervous to switch to AT&T when we signed up with DirecTV. We could have bundled for super cheap, but it wasn't worth it to me.
@MissOtter31: We love DirecTV. I live in the midwest so we typically have really stormy springs, and we have had a ton of rain and some really bad storms here this spring and summer, and our service has only gone out 1 time that I know of. My Comcast used to go out in bad weather too though. I was always hesitant to get a dish for that reason too, but we know a few people who have DirecTV and they said it's not really an issue for them, and it really isn't. It's not like it goes out just because it's a little cloudy. It would have to be a servere storm. And like I said, I used to lose my Comcast service in that bad of weather anyway. Even if your service does go out though, you can still watch your DVR recordings if you get one of those boxes.

So, in case you didn't know, I'm a college student living in my own apartment. My parents pay my rent but I'm responsible for everything else. Because of where my apartment is, I HAVE to have Comcast or a dish (which I really don't want). I wish I could have FiOS because they're so much cheaper but of course I can't. Anyway, I had signed up for a promo deal with Comcast when I moved into my apartment. Because I just hit the year-mark living in my apartment, my promo deal ended.
Imagine my surprise though when I got my bill and it was $130 this month for just TV and internet! I don't even have a home phone because I didn't think it would be worth it. I find it ridiculous that Comcast can charge such ridiculous prices. I'm contemplating dropping my TV services with Comcast and just using Netflix. I'll have to keep my internet (unless I can find some better alternative).
Does anyone else share my hatred of Comcast?
