On my way home from work, I watched a little dog run across the major street I was on and almost get hit. I stopped the car, pulled over, and then saw the second dog nearby. I chased the two of them for about twenty minutes with no luck. They would come to just barely out of arm’s reach, then dart away. I noticed that they kept going toward the fenced off backyard of one particular house (on the corner of the big street and the residential one). I could hear two more dogs of approximately the same size on the other side of the fence. I finally went up to the door and knocked. The lady who answered said that the house was a duplex, and the dogs belonged to the person on the other side of the house. The dogs, she said, escape constantly.
I followed one and finally found the hole she had dug under the fence. It was a hole the owners obviously knew about, since there were a bunch of landscaping bricks right next to it. I got her to go back through the hole, and I covered it with the rocks.
I was finally able to grab the other dog, but she wouldn’t go back through the hole. I finally took her to my car and left a note with my phone number on the owner’s door.
When I got the dog home, I noticed how filthy she is. She’s crawling with fleas. She’s obviously had puppies before; her nipples are extremely pronounced. I don’t think the puppy-making abilities have been removed, either; she doesn’t have any scars on her belly. Neither dog was wearing a collar. The fence was falling apart, and it’s easy to see why the dogs escape all the time. She’s also obviously not an indoor dog at all, even though she’s only about thirteen pounds. Oh, she’s also cringing whenever we raise a hand like we might hit her.
Dog owners like this infuriate me. Why even bother having a pet if you’re never going to let it in? Why not spay the dog? Why not treat it for fleas? Why not let your four small dogs indoors? Why not put collars on your animals when you know they escape frequently? Why not FIX YOUR DAMN FENCE BECAUSE YOU LIVE ON A BUSY ROAD AND YOUR DOGS ARE GOING TO GET THEMSELVES KILLED IF YOU DON’T???
I have a lot of stuff to do tonight, and I’m running way behind because DH and I had to run to the store and pick up dog supplies so we can take care of her (read: give her a bath with flea shampoo) until her owner calls. We leave for a wedding tomorrow morning (won’t get back until Sunday), so I don’t know what we’ll do if they don’t call before then. I’m also worried because she’s barking a TON in the spare room, and I’m sure the neighbors hate us right now. If they report us, we could get in trouble for having her around. Better than letting her get hit, though.
Honestly, I’d be lying if I said I weren’t tempted to go back to the home, take the other three dogs, and never let their unfit owner see them again, though.
Ugh. Okay, have to run some errands before stores close. Stupid bad pet owners.
