@jesleigh: That isn't really supposed to happen. Have they checked you for Chronic Fatigue or Guillain Barre syndrome?
I had mono once in high school and then had elevated blood titers for years, but the symptoms never reoccured.
Ugh! I had mono in college...I'm a nurse and while its very unlikely that you will ever get it again due to your body building up antibodies, it DOES happen. Yuck! Feel better soon!
Guillain Barre syndrom would involve ascending weakness and paralysis...it can be caused from the epstein-barr virus but its signs and symptoms are very different from mono. With mono the chief symptoms are hepatosplenomegaly (englargement of spine and liver) as well as strep throat and tonsilitis.
Ugh, yes. I had mono a couple of years ago. Felt like I had it forever. Then a few months after I finally got over it, I got it again :( I worked with kids too, so I was unable to work for a few weeks each time I got it. Now every time I feel sick I make my doctor test me for mono. Hang in there, sister!
spleen and liver...not enlargement of the spine! haha sorry!
My Dr. basically just said it was a mono flare up and gave me a round of antibiotics and steroids. The mono has followed the same pattern every time- it begins with a sore throat and swollen lymph nodes in my neck , then progresses to body aches and fatigue.
I have to admit, usually it occurs when I don't get enough sleep. Last week I averaged about 4 hours a night because of my hectic schedule. I guess I'm going to have to start being extra careful. :/ I'm a teacher and I need to keep my immune system working because kids are always sharing their germs. :)
I've heard that taking Bee Pollen and probiotics could help. Anyone have any experinece with either of these?
If your doctor said it was mono then gave you antibiotics, what he has done doesn't make sense. Mono is caused by a virus and antibiotics are not effective against viruses- only bacteria.
Once you have had mono, you always carry the virus and it can flare up from time to time.
@Miss Orchard: strep thoat is not a symptom of mono- strep is a bacterial infection. SORE throat IS a symptom of mono.
I've had mono twice too. It sucks. The second time wasn't as bad as the first time, thank goodness. I also had CMV when I was in college and didn't even know. We did titers in lab and mine was through the roof!
Julie is right, antibiotics won't do any good against a viral infection. Not sure why your doctor put you on those. It's useless.
I have heard that if you eat LOCAL honey, it'll help with allergies, but I haven't heard of it helping anything else. IDK though. Hope you feel better soon!
@julies1949: It's not uncommon for a doctor to put someone on antibiotics when they have a viral infection. They do it to prevent secondary bacterial infections from setting in while they are immunocompromised. So he may be treating her throat as a seperate infection that is secondary to the mono...I used to get strep ALL the time (9 times a year for a couple years running!) so anytime I got fatiged by anything, I would end up on antibiotics becasue the strep would come back full force. It was never really gone, I was always carrying it somewhere in my body, and as soon as my immune system took a kick, it'd come back.
OP, We finally found out we had household mold, finally after the basement flooded one spring and I had to move out, we tore off the drywall and it was COVERED in it...and that was causing all kinds of respiratory illness, often with overall fatigue, body aches, mild fever, headaches extreme sore throat and upper respiratory infections. Honestly, I suffered for 4 years, within 2 months of moving out, I was like a new person. My old roommate still lives there and suffers illness every few weeks...Have you had your household air quality checked?
I'm not sure whey she gave me antibiotics. The last flare up I had she didn't give me anything except a B 12 shot. I did have a fever when I went in to see her so maybe she suspected another infection in addition to the mono?
I feel much better than I did when I went to see her on Sunday. I'm hoping for a speedy recovery...in addition to teaching and wedding planning I'm finishing up my last semester of grad school and have a major capstone project due at the end of the semester. :/
@Take The Reins: Oh wow! I'm glad you don't have to deal with that anymore. No, I've never had my house checked before. That's something to consider! It's scary how hidden factors can harm our health.
I had mono for my wedding - it was really awful. I almost fell asleep at my own rehearsal dinner. I also lost so much weight and my dress hardly fit.
I had had it before in college, but it flared up due to stress. All that will really take care of it is as much rest as possible :/
@KateByDesign: Oh wow, so sorry to hear that. :( It really takes a lot out of you!
@jesleigh: Yeah, and it's so often overlooked too! The headaches were the biggest thing for me, every day. I;d go away for a few days, and I'd feel better then go home and get sick agian. I was too dense to realize it, but once we discovered the mold, it all clicked. I was moving out anyways, so once I left I never went back into the house and it was a huge relief. I haven't had strep since, and that was almost 3 years ago.

This is my third mono flare up in four years. Has anyone else ever had mono symtoms reoccur after the initial diagnosis?
