People are idiots, especially around kids with special need when they dont understand. I’m mouthy enough i would have told them to back off and not threaten people or I would call the cops.

You’re not nuts, I would have been mad too. I think you did the right thing considering you were on the job, it would have been hard to keep my mouth shut if I were in that situation..

@lalalyanne:  I do very similar kind of work, and I would be horrified if this happened while I was with a client and working. I would probably complain to the manager of the place, and let them know the person did that, not that it would make a huge difference.

@lalalyanne:  Well, in fairness, if they are Hell’s Angels, or the sort that would like to be, that’s about the level of discourse to expect of them.

That does not excuse it, but I’m disappointed in humans based on the fact that any of us are Hell’s Angels.

What the heck?! Who threatens a kid for something as innocent as that?

You are definitely not nuts for being mad, that’s just rude and uncalled for!

Wow, I can totally understand WHY you are shaking & upset

More so in that the child with you was not your own… but a client.

And he’s a kid… he was doing what kids do… say stuff without a filter at times.  And in all fairness he was being a compassonate human being… caring about the welfare of someone else, another kid no less.

So ya, the right response on behalf of the adult would have been A, B, or C (even if it was another Adult that made the comments)

If I was the Parent… my reply would have been “Thanks kid, it’s ok… I got it.  Simon, sit down properly !!”

But D ??

Totally caught me off guard.  And not ok.

Why is ok now in society for people to bully / threaten others?  I don’t get it.

How in any way shape or form is this child (your charge) being a threat to them ?

@lalalyanne:  I used to live around people like this. I’ve also worked in a jail, and put some time in at the biker bar, many moons ago. Sadly, there is really nothing you can do about people like this. You can’t teach people how to have class, manners, or compassion. Folks like this just enjoy being trashy. You can take comfort in the fact that the next time the cops show up to break up one of her many public domestic squabbles at the bar, they’ll probably run her name, realize she has warrants out for petty theft or drug charges, and she’ll go away for awhile.

I also brought up the biker thing for a reason. While the bikers I hung out with weren’t necessarily poster boys for etiquette or good manners, they’d NEVER put up with their old ladies treating a kid like that. In fact, you’d be more likey to see them threatening the J.O.s that were doing the threatening. She and her husband might be Hell’s angels, but the first thing that came to mind when I read your post was “POSER”! My money is on her being FOS. Its more likely they fantasize about being Hell’s Angels when they ride their dirt bike.

I would be livid as well. I cannot comprehend how some people can be so rude and insensitive and to go as far as to THREATEN you and a child because of an insignificant comment from a kid?? What is wrong with people?? I don’t know anything about Hell’s Angels but they certainly don’t sound like a group I’d be proud to belong to.

As for your question, a few years ago I probably would have just ignored the kid if I were in that situation, but since I’m currently in a field where I work with people of all ages with varying disabilities I would probably play along with the kid and say something like “thank you! we have it covered!” I don’t think one comment (even if repeated a few times) from a kid or even an adult of any age or any degree of functioning level would be something to get so damn pissed about. What would a Hell’s Angel do if they had a child with a disability??? Jeez.
