Any advice is so appreciated. There is a small closet in the bedroom and a big walk in closet ... the only thing is, he completely has every available space filled. There is really no room for me. Now I have to somehow go through it all ... divide and CONQUER!!

First, there is a horribly cluttered storage closet that has a huge cedar closet in which we could put clothes that we are not wearing ... but it's overflowing with junk.

    =(  Helpppp

You should start by sorting through his clothes and the "junk" in the closet. Get three boxes or bags for: throw away, donate, sell. Once you do that, then put clothes that are out of season in boxes or bins that can go under the bed or in another closet (don't forget to put some cedar blocks or chips in there). If you need more help with clearing clutter, I find that flylady.com has some good tips. ALthough I ignore her strange stuff about shining the sink and getting dresses to the shoes everyday!

It's hard to share closet space! Good luck!

Move him out of there! I have the closet in our bedroom and FI uses the guest bedroom closet. LOL. We had the biggest closet EVER in our apt. When we bought our house this year, well it's an older house, with those older teeny tiny closets. STILL trying to forget how nice that closet was........

I made FH go through his clothes before we moved into the new house ...

My advice is to take all the clothes out of the closet and lay them out on your bed, make FH put on EVERY article of clothing, if it doesn't fit, has stains or looks odd ... throw it in either the toss or donate pile. I think FH got rid of 1/2 of what he owned ... near the end he was tossing a ton just to avoid putting it on (LOL) - nothing goes back into the closet before it is tried on!

I did the same for myself ... 1/2 the clothes ended up in the closet, about 1/4 were put into storage, and the last 1/4 were donated or tossed!

We had piles for toss, donate, and storage ... the rest was allowed back in the closet. It took a couple days to get through it all, but was well worth it

Make him move his stuff! I emptied out half my closet for my husband...it's no easy task. But i also know that if i hadn't done it, he would have dumped half my stuff out on the floor!!! Sharing is caring lol

definitely make him sort through and get rid of some of his stuff! before i moved in my fi had emptied out half of his closet, and tons more. i also went through my crap and donated a lot knowing there wouldn't be a lot of room for me. if you don't NEED it, donate!

I've been doing this the last few weekends and I'm not gonna lie, it sucks!  I managed to convince him to donate about 4 trash bags worth of clothes and I donated 3 plus a big box of shoes.  I also bought a big Rubbermaid and we put all of our t-shirts that we want to keep as souveneirs but we never actually wear.  That's now stored in the attic.  Now we each have a dresser and he has a 4' closet and mine is about 6'.  I also installed some wire shelves out in the bedroom for sweaters and jeans.  I hated to put that on display, but with no walk-in, I didn't have a choice.  A double-bar thingy that I bought helped a lot too.

I think I'm going to start tomorrow. I have my MOM coming to help! Lol. She's the queen of organizing and she's really excited to help me. I keep dropping hints to him that I'm going to put lots of his stuff he doesn't use in the storage closet ... and he's really upset lol. He keeps telling me we'll do it later ... SURE. I have to tackle this tast on my own with my mother ... eeek

My FI has already cleared out my half of the closest so thankfully I don't have to worry about that. I already bought bins for the things that are off season.

We went to Ollie's and bought one of those stand up closets.  It wasn't that expensive and oh so nice, the only closet was super tiny and he had his stuff barely fitting.

The bloggers from Young House Love had a rad solution to this.  They put closet "built-ins" into their bedroom and did it on a major budget - check it out: http://www.younghouselove.com/2008/02/over-our-heads/

BTW - it's the raddest shelter blog
