I thought it was going to be a peaceful Sunday afternoon, but it quickly turned chaotic with one phone call. I am a 911 dispatcher in a small town in Iowa. About 2 hours ago I received a call from a frantic young mother screaming that her 1 week old baby wasn’t breathing. I immediately paged the ambulance and first responders. The ambulance called in and told me they were running code blue to the hospital and requested I get a helicopter en route. The helicopter was there in 15 minutes.
When they said ‘code blue’ my heart sank and all I could think of was my daughter who is now 2 years old. I started to believe the worst and just started having a terrible day.
After a long time of not hearing anything from the ambulance crew, one of the crew members called in and told me the baby is stable and doing good!!! WHAT A RELIEF!
Although I am behind the scenes, calls like these really get to me and are so stressfull and heartbreaking. I am so happy that everything turned out okay and that I was able to act fast and do my part.
I’m not looking for a pat on the back or anything like that, I just wanted to remind you all to be so thankful of what you have and cherish every minute. You never know when something unthinkable will happen.
