I’m curious now… why do people ask for the father’s consent? Is it a local tradition?

I ask because my own father is quite strongly against it!

That’s exciting! Yay for moving forward!

We’re seeing my family next week, and SO is planning on asking my mom for permission. This totally caught me off guard–originally he said he wasn’t planning on asking her, but now that we’ve actually set the plan in motion to get engaged, it seems he’s changed his mind. I think it’s very sweet that he wants to ask her 🙂

@krayzay87:  Oh, gosh no… I wouldn’t marry someone my Dad didn’t approve of, either. But that’s more because I trust his judgement completely than anything else… for example, I would marry a man my Mum disapproved of, because I believe that her judgement is poor when it comes to people.

I ask because I was having this discussion with some friends, and I wondered if it was regional. One friend said that he had to ask because the family is from “the Southern US”, as if that explained everything. Another friend said that he had to ask because “it’s traditional in Italy”.

As an aside… my Dad is a pretty hardcore feminist (unusual, right?), and he made it clear to FI from day one that he would not be impressed by a request for my hand!

@Rachel631:  I think it’s a nice and respectful gesture.  I see it more as, he’s making sure that your parents are ok with you guys getting married and also officially telling them that you will propose soon so they have a sort of timeline.  It doesn’t have to purely traditional in reason.  My SO is probably going to talk to my parents this weekend for permission too! 😀

@Rachel631:  My guy and I have been together forever and I’m definitely not a little girl under the control of her daddy.  But, my FI asked both of my parents for their blessing… more as a sign of respect, like “I’m thrilled to (hopefully) be marrying your daughter and I hope you’re thrilled too!?”  And since they love him, of course they were.

My dad definitely would not respect some macho traditional guy who thought he was getting a daughter handed off to him by my dad, haha!

@lolot:  LOL! That’s so interesting… especially seeing as I’m the one from the religious becakground, and everyone assumes I’m the traditional one! Not at all, as it turns out…
