I was trying to pull a box that was too heavy for me out of my car for a conference for a job told my last day was the 8th of Aug. (yeah, whole other story why I my last day was 'ignored'). Anyway, because noone at my company will help marketing (including carrying heavy boxes, even though the marketing team consists of me and one other girl - who is pregnant) I had to haul this box out of my car alone. Obviously, the box shifted, I smashed my hand and my ring got crunched. Setting bent, large diamond gone, several pave set diamonds gone. RUINED. I feel like I am going to vomit.

no insurance, I was told just to "not lose it"

I found the large diamond on the car floor. THANK GOD. I would not even be able to see straight if I lost that. THe little ones are gone though. And the actual ring is destroyed.

Also my jeweler is in Boston, I am in Australia and my wedding is in Hawaii in 1 month.

A little good news goes a long way. The diamond is most precious. Save the band it can be salvaged. A good jeweler will have you fixed up in no time.

chirico is so right thank god you found the diamond! Are you going to be stopping in Boston before you go? My jeweler told me if any of my pave diamonds came out they would replace them. If you could get it to them maybe it wouldn't be too bad.

I'm so sorry.  I good jeweler will make it better though.  My sister has had to replace a few of her smaller stones, she said it's about $60.

I agree, since you found the large diamond, a good jeweler should be able to fix you up.  Hugs though!

It sounds like your ring gave it's life for your hand.  You might have a broken finger right now if it weren't for your mangled precious ring.  Sorry it happened, but I'm glad you're ok!

Oh no!!!! Thats horrible! I'm soooo sorry! Like everyone else has said, at least you found the big diamond but good god, that SUCKS!!! I hope you can fix it before your wedding...  I don't know if this is a bright side but now you can pick out a new setting if you want, so it could be like getting a brand new ring? That might not be much consolation, ugggh, horrible thing to have happen, especially on your last day at work!

The exact same thing happened to me a month after I got my ring (pulling something of the trunk and everything, the prongs bent and the stone popped out).

We called the jeweler and they fixed the setting for free, no questions asked. I'm not sure everyone would do it pro bono, but it is fixable. They ended up adding a gallery to secure the prongs more. I don't even notice the change.

GET INSURANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So glad you found the diamond. I'm sure you're still devastated to have destroyed the e-ring and you never want anything bad to happen to it again, but GET INSURANCE!!! That way if something happens again, it will be a sentimental loss but you'll have the funds to replace/repair it.

So sorry to hear this happened to you! I would get insurance ASAP, it is completely very well worth it. I hope you can figure something out and it all works out.

Seriously get insurance!  I got mine through Jewler's Mutual; it took 3 days!  The price depends on how much your ring appraises for. My ring was $12K and the insurance is $140 a year,  that's less than $12 a month for peace of mind. So worth it!  Jewler's mutual will replace or fix your ring at the jewler of your choice too! Covers theft, damage, and mysterious disappearance.

I'm SO sorry.  There's no one where you're at that can repair it?  Even small jewelers may be able to do something.

Also, you can add it as a line item under your home owners/renters insurance. Mine is covered by our renters, oddly enough.

But really, even if the prongs look completely mangled, it can probably be fixed. Don't work yourself up too much!

Thanks everyone for your comisserations. I am a little less of a basketcase today. My mom talked to my jeweler in the States and they need to see pics of the damage but THINK they may be able to fix it. But doesn't metal lose its strength once it has been bent? The big problem is getting the ring to Boston. They aren't sure it can be insured for the posting. (at least for the amout it's worth). And I'm terrified of it getting stolen from the mail - I have to declare it for customs so I'll have to write on the slip that gets taped to the outside of the box "diamond". If that doesn't say "steal me" i don't know what does! I am going straight to Hawaii so I can't bring it back myself until after the wedding. I think I am going to have to face that I won't have it for my wedding. or my last 7 weeks of being engaged.

I know it's dumb I didn't have insurance but it was difficult since I bounce between countries and if I had insurance in one place, it wouldn't be covered in the other.

I am so miserable. I'm just trying to not think about the ring or the wedding until I finish work (which I blame for  MOST of my misery) at the end of the month. Being engaged was fun at first but now it just SUCKS. I just want to close my eyes and wake up married.

My ring was bought in California and we live in DC. So when I broke it, it was insured by the USPS for twice the value. Their policy apparently is to have everyone that handles to box sign it, so it's completely traceable. We had no problems. Not sure what would happen for an international package.

    Have faith in your jeweler!

Everything happens for a reason,. I crushed a finger years ago and DG's right, maybe it saved you a crushed finger!!! And you found your diamond. A jeweler can fix it! Broken fingers eon't look pretty with wedding dresses

At least you found the large diamond. My FI said that small ones are actually really inexpensive, and it's just as easy to get a whole new setting if you are concerned about the integrity of the old one holding up after repair. Seriously, my setting cost under $300, no stones, just white gold, and I think it's absolutely lovely. Get the extra little diamonds that remain set into a wedding band! It will look better that way (in my opinion). Good luck though... I think I'd have a caniption lol.

Don't worry about the gold. It may have to be recast and it won't lose its integrity

Gold is like any other metal, depending on the temperature it's heated to (beta transus, etc), it shoudln't lose any tensile strength (the point at which it would neck and then snap...every metal has an amount of elastic strength in which it can bounce back. It's very minor but it is there) so your jeweler will be careful. It's one thing to bend it hot and another to bend it cold.

I'm sorry to hear about your ring!!  At least you have the most important part of it, the diamond.  So once you get it fixed or a new band all together...don't forget to get it insured!

    AWWW.  ((((HUGS)))))

Take a deep breath.  IT WILL BE OK.

I would start asking around for good jewelers.  Maybe you can have the setting fixed and have them put a cz in it for mailing.  Keep the diamond with you until you can have it set later.  NO one will know and you won't feel so nervous and pressured.  You can have the ring properly fixed by the people you want.

Or find a stand in ring set all together.  Get something similar to yours that you can wear and use until after the wedding - then you can get yours fixed and you won't feel "naked" while it's gone.

    Best of luck.

That royaly sucks. I would talk to your jeweler and see if they can combine your engagement ring, diamond and wedding band together. That way you get a really nice new setting. But I will say that after I got my ring resized (smaller), the setting and prongs of the diamond started to come loose - and I didn't even do anything to it! The original jeweler we bought it from resoddered the setting no charge. Do you have family in Boston? Can you ship it to family and then have them fix it and bring it with them to the wedding in Hawaii? And I would look into insurance in the states. You might be surprised, it could cover you in travel and in other countries.
