So I’m sure many of you have already chosen something for your honeymoon, but I wanted to share this anyway! (long, but with pretty pic!) For your consideration for future vacations!
When we first started looking for our honeymoon things popped into my head like luxury resorts on the beach of an exotic location. But things like the budget largely restricted our choices. MrMeese and I decided that we definitely needed a beach and a foreign country. So I made the unilateral decision to head to Belize (MrMeese wanted Costa Rica initially, but I’ve already been there). We didn’t want to settle for an overcrowded hotel/resort due to our budget, so we looked for alternatives. This is where vacationrentals.com came in. Just this last xmas we rented a private guest home in CA where 5 of us could stay comfortably and relax by our private pool, pick oranges off our own little trees and enjoy fresh juice, and come and go as we liked all the while enjoying peace and quite of a home, all for about 1/3 the price of a lower end hotel. So I thought, why not in Belize?? Let me address my and my fiance’s major worry first:
How do we know the people are legit/the house is what they say it is? Well, when I found places I liked, I made sure that they had reviews from previous customers, then I emailed them to make sure they were real people. Also, we picked a place that had the owners on site just in case anything went awry. Overall, I recommend establishing a relationship with them and asking for references, lots of them.
Anyway, what I don’t get about everyone looking for a honeymoon is why people don’t look into this more? I know it isn’t for everyone because you mostly cook for yourself and there isn’t always a pool or spa nearby, but in my opinion these things are trivial for the money that you can save (thus the ability to go places you might not be able to afford) and the ability to be truly alone on your honeymoon. Also, most places are within close proximity to everything that you could want (restaurants, nightclubs, spas, tour companies, etc).
Just to give you an idea: Our budget is $4000 for airfare, housing, food, activities, misc….pretty much everything. And this is everything we are getting:
-2 Tickets to Belize, a private cottage 100 ft off our private beach with a private dock for 8 nights, a sea kayak to take the 15 min paddle to the barrier reef for snorkeling, a day tour to the ruins/jungle, a day fishing trip, a spa day, a guided day trip to the best snorkeling on the barrier reef, delicious food like lobster everyday, private hammocks and beach chairs, a local tourguide to give us all the pointers we need…and a lot of things that are small details but make a huge difference! and most of all PRIVACY! no obnoxious people slamming doors or kids everywhere or anything!
