I know it's silly to be posting this on the boards, but no one else is answering their phone and I need to let it out somewhere.

My fiance, who's Canadian (we're in the last leg of his immigration process, he should be here in early October) just called me to let me know he had a minor heart attack.

    I'm still in shock.

He's 6'10" (yeah, super tall!), 240 lbs and healthy.  Runs all the time.  The ER doctors sent him home, but said to take it easy and see his doctor this week.  I don't even know what to think... I hate being so far away from him.  siiiigh.

Have any of you heard of a healthy twenty-something having a heart attack?

Awwww I'm so sorry to hear that AND that no one is answering their phones! What awful news to have to deal with. It must be super hard to be away from your FI right now! I haven't heard of that, but i'm glad to hear that it was only minor and that he is home safely. Hopefully they have caught any problem early and can monitor him closely. Do you think it has to do with his height? My FI is 6'5 and has really high blood pressure even though he is in excellent shape. Weird.

    Hang in there!!! ((((HUGS))))

Oh my gosh, how scary!  Maybe it's  blessing in disguise--he can get an update on his health situation and learn what things he can do to prevent another one.  Hang in there!

That is really scary. I am glad he is okay. I am sure you will have more answers we he follows up with a cardiologist and his regular physician. That should help you feel less shaken up.

He needs a thorough evaluation for underlying causes as soon as possible.  He may have a familial hypercholesterolemia or some other predisposing factors.   Are they absolutely sure about the diagnosis?  Does he have any known underlying predisposing conditions such as diabetes?

Make sure he asks lots and lots of questions when he goes in for his evaluation.  They should also do some further evaluation on him, and he should write down what they tell him and the results as they can come back so that you can have help translating what happened and why after the fact.

Hope that helps!  I imagine you feel very little control over the situation.  I'm sending good thoughts your way.

Thanks for all the well wishes, ladies.  I think I'm still in shock; I can't even fathom him having a heart attack.  It's times like these when the distance is the hardest!  I'm sure everything's going to be okay, though.

Mrs. DG-  Thanks for the thorough response.  I'll forward that comment to him and make sure he asks tons of questions.  He's the type who passes off any health concerns... and while he's upset about this, I can imagine him not asking all of the necessary questions.

He acted like they weren't 100% positive with the diagnosis.  They told him that all of his symptoms looked like a heart attack; I was a little bit thrown off by the fact that they sent him home without being sure.

As far as we know he's perfectly healthy and no one in his family has a history of heart problems.  I'm anxious to see what his physician says.  Hopefully he'll be able to see a cardiologist, too.  He has to get it all taken care of before he comes because he'll be without insurance for a few months once he gets here.

Tell your FI to ask about Kawasaki disease as well. Not many people know about it yet, but it's become the number one cause of heart disease in children, and the doctor my mom works for is researching the possible cases of how it might effect people in their 20's and 30's - thinking it may be the cause of previously unexplained heart troubles.

I defintely hope he's okay. ::Hugs!::

Oh my goodness! i have heard of this happening, but it was usually induced by something else (heat, stress, dehydration) or that person had an underlying condition.

I was having really bad chest pain once and they took me in for an EKG and whatnot, but they said it was probably heartburn Embarassed

I hope they find out what's wrong!!!

Wow, I can totally feel for how shocking that is.  I know someone, not quite that young, but still young and healthy, and pretty much no family history etc.  He went to the hospital with chest pains.  And it looked like heart attck symptoms.  They started treating and testing him for all of that stuff, only to find no blockage.  It sounds like it was muscle "dying off" from his workouts.  As for the chest pain???  Probably muscular.

I'm curious when he went into the hospital that they seem to be releasing him so soon.  Did they give him an EKG?  That's where they'll determine where the blockage is, if anything.  Did they give him meds?  I'm really not too familiar with minor heart attacks.  I'm just really wondering if he in fact had a heart attack.

I am sorry you are having to deal with something like this.  A similar incident happened with my father (very healthy and active, 5'9 and 150lbs, and running marathons), but it turned out that his cholesterol was sky high and he had atherosclerosis from a diet that was not completely balanced.  He ended up needing to completely change the way he ate (gave up red meat and eggs for 10 years to lower his cholesterol), and is back to normal (with moderation) now.

I hope the best for you and your fiance.

Oh My! I am so sorry to hear that. With your strength (and of course his), he will come out of this OK.

Keep your head up and be thankful that he has another chance at life!

Sorry to hear about that.  My friend's fiance had a stroke at 25 and then exactly one year later he had another!  Everything is all fine now, so I'm praying the same for you and yours.

::Hugs:: I can only imgagine how stressful this makes you feel.

I don'´t want to scare you but please make sure he follows through with the doctors and the questions. When I was in college, another student (healthy, in his early 20s) died of a heart attack, he was a tall, active runner with no previous health problems. Aparently he had a previous condidion without symptoms (so he didn't know about it). He drove to the beach to go running one day and had a heart attack in his car in the parking lot, it was all over hte news. Hopefully, if your FI has any medical issues, this incident will help the doctors solve the problem early. Best of luck to you both.

I'm so sorry - that's scary to be far away when you want to be near. It seems good that this was minor and you now have the chance to do some tests and find out what the underlying causes are. Oouf. We hope you and your FI feel better soon.

Sorry to hear of your terrible news, Jenna. A co-worker of mine was in his late 20's when he had a heart attack. He, too, was very healthy apart from his mild hypertension. It turned out, that too much stress caused his blood pressure to skyrocket and he had a heart attack. Maybe something was causing your FI some stress, which resulted in the heart attack? Hopefully he will be ok. Hugs.

does he do artifical sweetners? Alot of athletic people who do diet stuff have heart attacks at a young age because their is fermalgahide (not sureif spelt right) which is emballming fluid in those artifical sweetners and if you push your heart which exercising does it can cause a heart attack sooner than those who do  not exercise. That is why Dr. Atkins who made Splenda died of a massive heart attack. People need to quit taking the world of everyone else and just because FDA approves it does not mean it is safe look at all the medicines that FDA has approved and now been pulled from the market because they killed people. Research things don't just take others word as the gospel.
