So I'm getting my hair cut today and I'm six weeks pregnant on Saturday.  I go to Aveda salons because I absolutely love them but they do those great neck/shoulder/head massages with oils.  Is this okay for me or should I skip it?  I looked it up and everyone seems to think it's okay but says there are a couple of points that aren't great to hit.  The opinion on these points range from people saying they cause miscarriage to people saying "It just makes you feel out of whack for a little while".  I also know the oils are probably fine because the person who cut my hair in South Carolina used them on people while she was pregnant.  I know this is probably dumb and I'm probably overthinking it and should just enjoy the massage but I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on this?

I would call your doctor for advice but I think you'll be fine. I just got a neck/shoulder/head massage at my last hair appointment and haven't experienced any negative effects- but I'm also in my second tri. :)

@MrsStrz: Yeah I've read it's fine during the second trimester.

I also just read that certain oils aren't good so maybe I'll just ask her to skip the oils or skip it altogether even though I love it so much.  I'd rather be safe than sorry.

I don't see why there would be any issue with the head/neck massage.

@Mrs.KMM: I don't know either, that's why I think I'm just being dumb and should enjoy it.

@mandb122: In reality, I think massages are low on the totem pole for causing MC.

I have my massage license.  The head and neck massage should be fine.  You want to avoid foot or hand reflexology done by a therapist.  Just normal foot/hand/neck/shoulder is fine.  Just tell your stylist you are pregnant and they may want to use a little lighter pressure since you could be more sensitive.  You may want to skip the oils though, if they are true full strength essential oils some can be dangerous during pregnancy. Relax and enjoy!

This is the time you should step away from the internet. If I can't get a shoulder massage while pregnant I'm rethinking babies altogether.

@MDC6.9.12: Thank you!  I'll ask her to skip the oil and see if she can go lighter on the massage!

I'm actually kind of worried about the oils anyway since they are so strong and right now certain smells (even my lotion which isn't that strong) make me feel kind of nauseous.

@LGenz: That's what my husband keeps telling me.  He keeps telling me to relax.

I had a full-body, prenatal massage at 15 weeks and it didn't cause any problems - I just felt great afterwards.  The parts that need to be avoided during a massage are around the feet (between the ankle and heel), since massaging that area is thought to trigger labor.  (The rest of the body is just fine :-) )

I had a full body massage at 11 weeks with no issue, but my prenatal masseuse did use unscented lotion. So definitely go unscented at the salon (esp. because Aveda products can get overpowering sometimes!).

    Enjoy!
