I’m so not the best person to ask (not pregnant), but I thought that avoiding the soft-serve was more about avoiding the machines that may have a questionable level of cleanliness. If it doesn’t involve the machine, I’d imagine it’d be okay…?

P.S. I like cheese, too. You aren’t supposed to avoid cheese when you’re pregnant, are you? Also, Cold Stone is amazing.

@DaneLady:  Good to know on the cheese. And yeah, I understand the concern. I guess it’s just matter of whether worrying tendencies or cravings win out. 😉

My understanding is that it’s the machines you’re worried about.

And, honestly, I think this one might be taking the worry a bit too far. I judge the place and how clean it is. I’m not going to get McDonalds soft serve, but I got TCBY’s in the swanky mall near us last week and didn’t feel a twinge of worry.  And I have seen plenty of other pregnant women getting frozen yogurt too.

BUT that’s just me. Gotta go with what you’re comfortable with.

It’s the machine and how clean it is.

Honestly, I don’t worry about it. I don’t do it every day, but if I want soft server then I’m going to get soft serve.

I’m a terrible influence though. I follow some rules, but not others. I feel like I might as well starve if I followed everything!

Pretty sure it’s just the machines. And honestly after reading why it turns me off from soft serve and I am not even pregnant yet. (hopefully soon)

Eat your heart out! you are safe – I’ve had all sorts of stuff you aren’t “supposed” to have – Caffeine, Sushi, Tuna….Its all about having things in moderation and making sure the place is clean and reputable.

I’ve been buying frozen yogurt at the grocery store. TCBY has some great choices!

My doctor said not to be too super crazy about worrying about soft-serve or other ice cream…and it is the cleanliness of the machine that you have to worry about!  She told me just to not get it from somewhere that looks questionable haha.  I have been eating soft serve and regular ice cream just like normal from my local shops…just nowhere that looks dirty or gross!

Cold Stone should be totally fine. I’m sure even soft serve is pretty safe if you’re getting it from a clean, reputable place.

I’ve been wanting some frozen yogurt and I know a place that’s very clean and nice. I feel pretty safe eating their product.

It’s about the machines, so ColdStone if fine; however, most OBs don’t really push the soft serve issue because it’s really not that big of a risk. Some even encourage the soft serve Japanese-style yogurts (the tart ones that you pay for by the ounce) because the benefits are great and the fat and sugar content is lower than regular icecream.

The reason Cold Stone frequently comes up in the soft serve discussion is because their ice cream is produced in store in frozen yogurt machines.  The partially frozen ice cream is dispensed into tubs and frozen further.  There’s a picture of the machine here.

Lots of ice cream places that advertise “ice cream made in store” do this.

Having said that I am in no way concerned about eating soft serve as a pregnant woman.  Now I’m off to sanitize and fill a frozen yogurt machine that I have to eat out of later (no joke).

Cold Stone isn’t soft serve ice cream so you should be fine in that regard.

But, having worked there in college, I can say that all the ice cream they serve is made in an ice cream machine in the back room.  I was actually the primary ice cream maker for my store.  So there is still a machine involved.

You are totally fine. I am 36 weeks and have eaten deli food and soft serve my whole pregnancy. My sister ate sushi her whole pregnancy. Its so rare to get sick from something like that.
