Hey ladies! Just planning ahead of time for when we decide to get pregnant...(which will be in about a year!)
I like original names. My friend just named her little girl Preslie. I know a girl who named her little girl Grey & I've ALWAYS been in love with the name Paisley but our last name is Lee so "Paisley Lee" doesn't necessarily go together...it could, but we'd like to stay away from the "Lee Lee"!! :) And I'm not just talking about girl names...boy names too! I like the name Harrison, so it'd be Harrison Lee. And people could call him Harris for short! I like the names not everyone has!!
Would any of you like to share your "original name"??
I have a friend who named her son Jarek Leland. That's pretty original, and I liked it a lot. She said that Jarek means spring and Leland means winter, her 2 favorite seasons.
@daydreamwanderer: Thank you!! That will come in handy! I just don't know what I want the name to start or end with or anything! LOL
I write fantasy, so I tend to search for (or make up) a lot of unusual but natural sounding names. First list - names I haven't used. Second list - names in my story.
Felicity, Peregrin, Althea, Grayson, Torin (not if you have WoW player friends, though), Piper/Pepper, Cyneswith/Kineswith, Carima, Brenna,
Clarette, Orende, Janen, Cafen, Kiana, Emlyn/Emelin, Tavin, Waldram, Mestia, Ladicea, Maleah, Connish, Marayna, Keerda, Kande, Darasi (boy's name from Papua New Guinea), Jonhian, Fareth, Enris, Sama, Setreh, Marisu, Marin, Aren, Tolara, Lata, Marset, Aldon, Nalia, Brennelin, Mareth, Jidena...
Of course, since I make up so many names, I want very traditional names for my kids.
I write horror and suspense...and FH read one of my longer stories, fell in love with the name of a girl who goes absolutely BSC (Lilith) and said he wants to use it if we ever have/adopt kids. HA!
I'd steer clear of any names based on ideas--Destiny, Hope, etc. Here's a little video for your amusement: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eqPmPA4Vn_U (NSFW)
I am all for orginal names! Growing up with a pretty unique name myself I plan on using all unique names for my children. (My name is Janessa)
My sister has a 1 year old boy named Sade (rhymes with Jade) - not the singer! Not a lot of people like that name but I think it's cute.
My friends name is Jennica (Jennifer and Jessica together). There are a lot of possibilities if you want a nickname, Jenn, Jenna, etc. Plus, I love the sound of Jennica Lee.
my friend named her son caibyn... (kay-been) i think thats pretty original :)
@ejs4y8: Hahahahaha, Dansea or Cheliel. Wow...weird!
Thanks for all the post girls! Love all the names!!!
@ejs4y8: If I did that with our last names ours would be SMELLY! ( Smith and Kelly)
My daughter's middle name is Germayne...we also have a Jada, a Jaxon McKenzie, and an Albany in the family.
I am a fan of boys names that are used for girls...Charley, Mychel, etc.
My sons name is Brogan.... and his middle name is Lee so i know it sounds good! LOL I use it quite often together :D... but we were going for something original too but not too different !
I dont know how original this is but my friend named her baby Corbin.
Combining names - LOL. Renneth or Kennae. Pabecca, Raul, Palecca. Kriscolas, Nictina. Alanmas, Tomana (my friend Alana's parents did just mash their names together). Siobhake, Blabhann. Megmas, Thoman. Myray, Rayna (I actually know a Mireille, who's name is pronounced Mur-ray.) Maricelle, Dennilyn. Loan, Jeo.
Jim and Kim really need to have Tim and Mim, though. But Jamberley is kind of neat, and I've used Kames as a last name in my book.
My name is Trista and I've never met another one.
If (hopefully when) we have a daughter we're naming her Piper.
I think it's interesting when names have apostrophes in them. Those are usually original and "special" in my opinion, lol. Not what I would ever choose, but that's just me.
@ejs4y8: LOL I know someone who did this.
I will name my first son after FH and my daughter's middle name will be Nashell (it is family tradition for the girls to have middle names that rhyme). Idk about the her first name because I wanted to name her after my late grandfather's (because I like his middle name Nathan and it has a good ring with Nashell), but it's a man's name. lol I may give it to my future son instead.
Our daughter is Kaia (Kai pronounced like the 'ki' in kite and the last 'a' makes the uh sound), people tend the mispronounce it all the time and it's really not that different. I had a whole list of names and he went through and crossed off what he didn't like. My faves are Kennedy, Kellan, and Kenley (I like K's). After having a normal name like Ashley and knowing at least six other Ashleys growing up, I wanted something different too.
@snmcdowell: Not to be a downer because those are really great names, but those names don't mean those things. I'd love to know her source because baby name books are notoriously fake, inconsistent, and just plain wrong.
Etymologically, Leland comes from an English surname that just meant "fallow land." Further, Jarek is of Slavic origin, based on 'jary' which means something akin to "fierce" or "strong."
It is a huge, huge peeve of mine when people announce that names mean things that people just made up. And honestly, nameberry etc and many popular baby name sites are guilty of this. There are other, better, etymologically grounded resources out there. Obviously, no site is going to be correct all the time, but the one I linked to is at least grounded in research and language research. Of course these other places are going to give everything a sweet meaning because they know that people will not continue to use their products if they look up their own (or their potential offspring's intended) name and find out that it means bitter, sorrow, blind, etc.
To the OP: I like names that are unusual yet established, such as those from mythology or literature. I also just like your plain old fashioned names that haven't completely made a resurgence yet.
My FI has been telling me since we started dating he wanted to name his 1st baby Megatron and if it's a girl we could call her Meg for short, that's pretty original. LOL...he's kidding though.
We talked about the name Calliope before and calling her Callie or Poppy (I guess that's a popular nickname for it in Greece). I don't know if Calliope Lee sounds very good together though.
Also, Theodora...calling her Thea. Thea Lee is kind of cute actually!
Years ago I named a fish of mine Tallulah and everybody thought that was unique, I kind of wish I had saved the name for a kid or a cat or something.
@Caszos- My favorite doll when I was growing up I called Jennica...I've never really heard of anybody named that, I thought I made it up. haha
I have friends who have kids named Niah (like Noah, but with an i...so Ny-ah) and Inara (in-are-a). Both girl names. Personally I have always loved Cadence (kay-dense)
soontobekatieb, Inara is my nieces name. I love the name, it's so girly girl :)
Teagan for a girl. I mentioned this name to FI one day and now he is hellbent on this being our daughter's name. :)
I have the hardest time coming up with good boys names that we both like.
The BFs name is Nevin (like Kevin...), and everyone always comments on its originality! I think its great but he seems to have frustration with it. Either people mess up the spelling or saying, or they ask him about it. So, this has brought me to think about our future kids names differently... do I want them to be another Tim or Jennifer, or do I risk them being teased or harrased by naming them something unique???
@flamingred: My friend's nickname is Smelly (don't know why, he's not a stinky boy!!) But my gramma thought for the longest time his name was Smelly (?!?!?!) And even though she now knows his real name, she ALWAYS refers to him by his nickname!
@MrsJKH2be: I actually know a few babies and toddlers named Mason!
I love the name Loden if we are having a boy, but FH isn't to keen on it. I thought the name was growing on him until he said it with our last name....it doesn't go with our last name!! I still love the name.
@MrsJKH2be: I know at LEAST three little boys named Braden, or some spelling variation thereof. It's very popular right now.
I was just going to say I think Braden is in the top ten or top twenty for boys names.
i've only every heard Audrina one other time from the girl who played in the hills..and that's going to be my daughters name (hoping that when I get prego, it's a girl)
Audrina Maree (Marie)
My 3 year old son's name is Aubrion Jae (aw-bree-on) (jay)
If the next one is a boy...I want Austin Elijah ...I think.
The "Au" is because my moms name is Audrey.

LOL, Audrey is a rather nice name....if I do say so myself. Interestingly enough, growing up I had so many people have problems with my name. They always wanted to add an "N" in it somehow: Andre, Andrea, Aubrey......have no idea why. But I love all your choices, MsMonicka!
It is all fine and good to go "original", but I am so freaking tired of parents being annoyed at you because you mis-pronounce, or don't know how to spell their kids weird name (it happens all the time working in NICU).
Keep in mind, if you do something totally made-up in order to be "original", your kid will be saddled with a life or being mis-pronounced and mis-spelled!
The next parent that gets annoyed at me for mis-pronouncing their kids messed up name is going to get a rant like they have never heard. Seriously, I meet hundreds of babies a year, it gets old fast!
@Ms Mini: Hee hee, I was a teacher for three years and I had trouble with students/parents when kids had names that made no phonetic sense. I had a girl whose middle name was spelled Aluxas, pronounced Alexis. I was an English teacher and "sorry, but that is NOT HOW SPELLING WORKS" was always lurking around in the back of my mouth.
Edit: also, Caresse, pronounced Sah-reese. Nope!
@octopus: I hate the snotty response when I ask how a name is spelled "well just like it sounds" ... ummm from my experience it is probably not like it sounds.
Case in point - the baby named Mykul (sounds like Michael, but spelled "right" in the parents eyes) ... groan - it is like a bad "hooked on phonics" spelling. We made fun of that spelling at the NICU for months (LOL).
