    My husband is a diehad football fan and I support his team, the Raiders (no haters, please). I'm not a fan of any team, I just like to watch but honestly I don't understand the rules and I hate to always ask him during the game.

    I would like to learn more about the game and surprise my husband with my new found knowledge. My issue is... How do I learn? Is there books? DVD's?

    Do any of you bee's understand the rules of the game?

    Hahaha, I'm constantly asking my guy stuff while we watch football/basketball games.  Whenever I start to feel a little knowledgeable about the rules, something always happens to throw a spin on everything, lol.

    The only rule I know is "Once the game starts to get interesting you must call a time out or stop the clock. Then once you start again, you must stop the clock in about 30 seconds. and continue this trend until the end."

    My SO tells me that I made that rule up, but I think its real because it happens in every game we watch. I struggle to watch football because they stop the clock and I am a clock watcher. lol. I hate that they stop it.

    Sorry I don't know any real rules, but there must be books out there that give the basics.

    oh the raider loss yesterday must of stung your hubby pretty bad!.. Im a huge football fan.. and I UNDERSTAND THE RULES...lol.. I learned everything from watching and asking.. you eventually catch on.. until they change the rules ... like the no forced out rule.. I was screaming at the tv that he got pushed out...and hubby told me they switched it to "no forced out" anymore.. .. if you have questions feel free to ask.. Im not sure about books or dvds. but that might be a good way to learn

    The basics are quite simple

    -you have 4 ( only 3 in Canada) tries to gain 10 yards or else the other team takes over wherever the ball is

    -that's why you see them kicking the ball away on the 4th down so the other team won't have such good field position

    -you can gain 10 yards by running the ball or the quarterback can throw it to someone

    -you can score 6 pints for a touchdown, 1 for a conversion kick(after a touchdown) or 2 points

       if you convert by running the ball over the line

    -you can also score 3 points for a field goal- kicking the ball between the uprights.

    Ther are lots of rules around penalties but the basics will get you understanding the game

    @julies1949 Good summary!

    I play in a fantasy football league with my FI and his friends (I did better than him this season hehehe).  Just think of "downs" as chances (i.e. 1st down, 2nd down, etc.).  You get 4 chances to run 10 yards.  If the team can't run the ball at least 10 yards in 4 tries, then they lose the ball and it goes to the other team.  This is repeated for approximately 3 hours.

    This is a cute comedy sketch by George Carlin about football and baseball (just something for fun): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmXacL0Uny0

    @tootsweet: lol If they hid the clock I probably could watch it. But they don't and I just stare at it the whole time. It bothers me soo bad. But I can watch a baseball game for hours with no problem. Go figure. Maybe its because there is no clock for me to stare at. ;P

    8 years of marching band + some middle school marching band and I'm just starting to understand it. julies1949 description is basically what I know beyond the facemask rule (don't grab it, you'll poke someone- like DH's second cousin's- eye out)

    Watching it with people who are willing to explain it as they go (gets frustrated if I ask too many questions) is the best way I've learned.

    @MissCallieJean: I have tears coming out of my eyes Im laughing so hard...because I did that today while at the gym.. I stared at the clock of the game that was on (rerun) and the clock at the gym.. to see how long it actually took for the 2 min. time out.. lol.. and when it said there was 5 min left in the quarter.. I looked at the gym clock to see how long it would really take.. (anything to quit looking at the amount of time I was working out on the trilyptical ..lol).

    @MissCallieJean: bahaha so true!

    I "watch" football with my SO but that doesn't mean I have a clue what's going on! Even after he trys to explain things to me, I still don't get it! Here is a typical conversation during a game:

    Me: What just happened?

    SO: They just _________,

    Me:....is that good or bad?

    @tootsweet: During games we would double the time left to figure out how long the quarter was left. It was just dangerous if we went down for halftime too early. Never again will I have to be careful about being hit in the head by an errant a ball, or vomited on (so much vomiting at the bench!), or being tackled, or tripped by camera cords. I may have done a happy dance on Thursday when I left my last game, EVER. I'm doing one now.

    I grew up watching pro football and adopted my FI's college team when we started dating. I absolutley love it. My FI and spent most of this weekend watching. This was the last weekend before the playoffs for professional football, so the games detirmined who would make it and in what seed. It also was the beginning of the BCS bowl games for college football. We were both a little sick so we indulged. :)

    I think the best way to learn about football is to care about a particular team. You can spend a long time trying to understand the details, but it is a lot more fun if you can get involved in the tradition and spirit of it all. The fouls can be a little confusing at first. The most serious fouls are tackling fouls. Dangerous hits, leading with your helmet, grabbing a facemask or a horsecollar. You get a 15 yard pentatly for these. Other common violations can be found here. http://www.newsdial.com/sports/football/football-penalties.html

    If you have any particular questions let me know! I would be happy to try to clear anything up.

    I am also one of the girls in the minority who are obsessed with football. I just love, love, love pro-football. I am pretty good at understanding the games, but there are times that I won't understand certain penalties called (the other night, Tony Romo was penalized for throwing a forward pass once he was beyond the line of scrimmage -- never saw that one before so I consulted my guy!) My guy and I actually wrote columns for the local newspaper since he is a diehard NY Giants fan and I am a diehard NY Jets fan and our teams matched up on Christmas eve. In case any one is bored lol here is the link *Note: you have to copy the whole link into your browser until it ends with the word "Sports" because it's not all showing up - sorry!!

    I would say watching the playoffs is a great chance to get involved and learn the game because the games count SO much so teams are playing at their best. Either way, I think any girls who love football agree that the more ladies who get on board, the better! It's annoying to be the only girl in a bunch of guys talking about FB lol -__- especially at first when guys don't think I know my stuff! :) But I do would love to answer any Q you may have with football if anyone is interested!!

    @WithLovein2012: Completely agree with your post, too! I think the only way I started really caring about football is when I fell in love with the NY Jets and the Arkansas Razorbacks (and in particular, most of the SEC in College Football). When it was just to keep my head above water with my family when I was younger, I couldn't care less lol. I was only a baseball fan until I started getting a passion for a particular team.
