I went on a diet for the past week (intended to go longer). I was only hoping to lose a few pounds and tone up (basically, the differencce between flabby-cellulite-thin and fit-sexy-thin) so I didn’t go nuts with starving myself or crazy exercise. I basically just watched what I ate.
Well, after about 5 days of this diet, my boyfriend saw me naked and said “Wow, this diet really worked. Please don’t lose any more weight, though, just stay here.” I don’t understand how I could have lost any weight though, because I wasn’t really that strict on myself–plus, when I weighed myself the next day at the gym i weighed the same. however, my boyfriend pointed out to me that my butt looks firmer and my waist looks smaller (sure enough, I seem to have lost an inch around the middle). He said my arms looked thinner too, and I noticed it as well.
Um, how is this possible? I want to be happy about it but I feel like it can’t be real, since I was only dieting for a week and my weight is the same. Has this ever happened to anyone else?

Your weight fluctuates about 5 lbs throughout the month. Or, at least, mine does. If you worked out and did not drink enough, then your body will hold onto all water and you will look bloated. Right before your period, you will gain water weight. You probably just did the “before” on a bloated day, and then a week later you magically looked thinner (not bloated).

Oh, and diet can affect how bloated you look. Especially if you cut out a lot of caffeine or salty foods.

@MsBlackberry: I still ate caffiene (not coffee though) and salty foods- I generally just ate less of what I’d normally ate, and I cut out some of the more pervasive junk food options. lol

If you were working out, I’d say that you lost fat and replaced it with muscle. A week is usually too soon to start seeing results, because you lose 1-2 pounds a week when seriously trying to lose weight. As a PP said, your weight fluctuates due to time of the month, what time of day you weigh yourself, water weight, etc. BF probably just thought you looked good.

Over the last year I’ve been really adament about my fitness and diet. I’ve lost about 5 dress sizes but my weight has stayed the same. I’ve toned up, slimmed down and replaced fat with muscle. Since muscle is leaner you’ll look thinner and more toned but muscle weighs more than fat.
Good job on making your goals! Its not easy and takes a lot of dedication.

I have to agree with PP’s and say that it mey be a combiniation of time in a month and some fat turning into muscle.
I have been on MFP and didn’t excercise, however I lost 7Lbs which fluctuates daily (some days I’m 3 Lbs heavier some I am lower) but I can fit into my size 6 pants, which I wasn’t able to before I started watching what i ate.

@embarrassed99: Yes the same thing happened to me about a week ago…I’ve been eating healthier ( still haven’t made it to the gym, though) and my SO said the same thing without me even asking. Since my scale broke I don’t know if I lost any weight but I was happy to hear him tell me that I’m “so small in his arms and he can definitely see a difference”
