I am writing a post on here out of pure desperation!!!
My fiance used all the $ he could spare to buy me my custom made dream ring and gave it to me on Valentines day. In the last two weeks I got a terrible stomach virus..got dehydrated/ lost weight. By Thursday & Friday of last week it started slipping off, multiple times. We planned to get it insured but never got the chance!!!
I stayed home all night on Friday, never left the apartment. I lost it sometime between 12- 3 a.m. We've looked everywhere imaginable, multiple times. we had our dogs checked. we checked our pipes. I even hired a professional ring finder! He spent six hours scanning our tiny one bedroom apartment (including the dogs!) and we have not found it.
i am so fortunate to have such an amazing man that he was never upset with me for even a second...but we are not people of great financial means...and are set to "elope" to vegas on our 3 year anniversary+ 5/27/10 (less than a month!)
the only things i can think of to try and find it are: 1- re-search every inch with a magnifying glass and flaslight 2- hire another ring finder 3- hire some sort "finding professiona (not sure what 4- see if i can find an even remotely credible psychic
if anyone out there has ANY OTHER IDEAS...ANY SUGGESTION< TIP, CLUE... anything....i would be so grateful!!!!
Best of luck to all of you in your own marraiges!
Megan
Oooh, so sad... Did you triple check the bed, sheets and frame as well as the sofa, cushions and crevices?
The good thing is that it has to be in your house, right?
I'll be sending good thoughts your way!
Oh no, that is so sad! Could you maybe borrow a metal detector from someone? It's got to be in your house somewhere!
Check in the area between the couch cushions, base of the back of the couch. Borrow a friend's metal detector and start of one corner of the apartment and go backwards.
I agree with Mrs DG, if you have a bedframe check in between that and the bed. check everywhere you would never think to check. depending on how delicate it is, you could vacuum and see if you vacuum it up? if you find it, make sure to get it insured asap!! Good luck, let us know if you find it
I closed the other related threads, since they had no responses yet. It's better if everyone consolidates their responses into one thread.
Megan-
First off, I am so so so sorry you lost such a precious item like your e-ring. I can not imagine what you are going through. Hugs to you....
Only tips I can offer are:
-checking ALL furniture cracks (sofa, chairs, bed between the matresses, etc etc) maybe it slipped down in there
-check your pants pockets, purse pockets, shoes, dog beds, window cills, pillow cases, trash can, if your dogs have a "toy" box check there, inside dresser drawers, in the candles that had the lid off, the fridge, cabinets, in the corners, vacuum cleaner, carpet if you have it.
A tip is turning the lights off and getting out a flashlight and slowly walk inch by inch slowly. I used to work at a hotel and a guest and his fiance had just got engaged and after getting back from their dinner her ring fell off in our parking lot, so I grabbed a flashlight and searched the area she was in and 45 minutes later I noticed a shiny diamond amongst some gravel and sure enough it was her e-ring :)
Best of luck to you and your fiance (which btw I respect for not getting upset at you for losing your e-ring) Hope you find it soon....let me know the outcome
Best-
Steph
Oh no! At least you know it's in the house! Do you have one of those magnets on a stick? My husband uses it to get dropped screws inside the engine bay of a car. I wonder if a ring would stick to that.
I hope you find it!
I think we need more details on what you were doing at the time the ring was lost.
Sleeping? If so-DESTROY the bed....completely take it apart to search the cracks in the frame, between the headboard, under the matress between the boxspring, inside ALL pillowcases....
You mentioned you searched the dogs....is there anyway they could have eaten it and 'passed it' by their walk the next morning? Also, just because it isn't physically on them doesn't mean they didn't bury it in their bedding, etc.
Have you washed anything? Check the bottom of the washing machine in the crack by the agitator, as well as the dryer vent.
Look inside all of your shoes
I have never heard of a professional ring locator, so I have no idea what they do....I would try to get my hands on a metal detector and comb my entire place.
Good Luck
Oh no! That's tough...
But at least it should be in the apartment and wasn't stolen...like everyone said, check everywhere again, look inside gloves, drawers, shoes, any place you can think of..good luck!
Oh and maybe invite friends/family members to help - they can have a fresh perspective and think to look in a place you didn't (and they are free)
OMG I am so sorry!! Did you check your washer/dryer? I second the vaccuum and ANYWHERE outside, it could have caught on your clothes and got loose outside. Check EVERYWHERE you have been and EVERYTHING you have touched. I would wait before hiring someone again and get some friends over and have everyone scour the place. Rent a metal detector!
PLease keep us updated, omg Im so sorry! If you dont find it by the wedding, I would just buy a fake stand in ring until you can either find it or get another one. And try talking to the jewelry store, maybe they can work something out with you, if it comes to yall having to buy another.
*hugs*
If you washed your hands at all I would check the handtowels/areas around the handtowels. Check the trash! (Even the bathroom trash!) Check under the bathroom rugs. Check your laundry period. Anything with pockets especially! Check the washer and dryer. Where were you between 12 and 3am? Sleeping? Check the pillow, the pillowcase, the bedsheets, and any crevices around the bed! Move the furniture around. Check the floor by actually laying your head on the floor. You'd be surprised what you can see!
did you check the air vents? I had a ring go down there...not my ering though! Hope you find it!
Make sure you check everywhere, even the places that you ar certain it is not. A friend of mine lost her engagement ring. Her fiance bought her a new ring as they had spent over amonth searching for the ring. A week after she got her new ring she opened up the wooden chest they have at their front door where they place their shoes. She picked up a pair of shoes she hadn't worn for a while and right underneath them was her ring.
I would also recommend looking in the filter of your washing machine/ dryer. I find all sorts of things in there.
I really hope you find it. I'llkeep my fingers and toes crossed for you!
If i was you....I would start with my bedroom and mover everything out! that touchs the floor....shake everything out in another room so u can hear it drop if it does....once there is nothing left in the room search the floor and as you startputting things back in check every inch of them!!! If u had a stomach virus....did u check the bathroom? like around the back of it (little gross but u never know) have u vaccumed since then? i would check the bag or canister! I have never heard of a ring finder either what did they do?!?! i am so sorry that must be the worst feeling ever! I hope you find it i really will keep u in my thoughts!
THank you everyone!!! I have already heard of a few places to look that never occured to me!!!!
the bad news is between 12-3 am i went in every room, including both closets (which i have never felt inspired to go through since we moved in). i layed bed and watched tv, i played with my dogs, i searched through/ organized both our closets, went into the pantry, fridge, freezer....looked the living room shelves, used the bathroom.....basically it could be anywhere in the apartment. through (gross) investigation) i am sure my 3 chihuahuas did not eat them. they were metal detected several times and are healthy BUT....they could have found it and hidden it somewhere to play with.
the good news is i never left my apartment (so its somewhere here), its a little one bedroom place and we own very little. not even a bedframe, just a mattress on the floor! i did not vaccuum (its broken) and we have no washer/ dryer nor did i go to a laundry mat...i realized it was gone within hours, searched all night and called a ring finder in the morning.
JUST A TIP for current/ future ladies in my predicament: yes there are professional ring finders. you can google the professional ring finders association and then look up the ones in your area. He charged us $50 for searching and metal detecting our whole apartment for 6 hours! he had some other tools too to help search down drains and a flashlight. they have better luck finding rings OUTSIDE rather than inside (nails in the floor, zippers, coins, etc will set off signals). he didnt find mine, but he could find yours!
i will try each and every suggestion that is applicable and i havent tried. hey...probably even a few of the good ones i did try already!!!
i am so grateful for your kindess, support and guidance:)
Megan
I am so sorry about your lost ring....I've always heard that if you lose something to pray to Saint Anthony, I know some ppl that have done this and it worked!! idk just a thought maybe give it a try :)
Could it have gotten caught on a sweater or another piece of clothing? my friend lost hers for a week and found it in her coat closet on caught on a sweater she was wearing-it got snagged on the cable knit.
I think you need to "re-organize" those closets again! Pull EVERYTHING out and go through them. Look on the bright side, major spring cleaning.
Also, you may not want to take your trash out or empty the vacuum until you are SURE it is not in there.
I second reorganising the closets, it could be caught in something, or in a pocket. I once lost a ring that I later found snagged in my think winter scarf.
Oh no, I'm so sorry! Lots of great suggestions from the hive. I hope this turns out to be one of those instances where it turns up someplace that you know you checked 37 times already.
i once had an earring fall out, roll behind the toilet and get lodged there. I didn't find it again until almost a year later! good luck on your search!
I'm so sorry you lost your ring. Do you have a heat vent in your room, like on the floor? My friend's husband lost his wedding band after taking it off in their room one evening before he went to the gym. Turns out that he put it on the nightstand and their cat knocked it down into the heating vent. They were able to take it apart and get it out.
Do you keep slippers by your bed?? I would check in all my shoes just to make sure!!! Were you washing dishes and set it down somewhere??
Good Luck!!
I completely and totally sympathize. I lost my engagement ring, too, but it disappeared outside my apartment. Thankfully, my fiance had insured it, but while there wasn't much of a financial toll, it was absolutely horrible emotionally.
Definitely go through everything in your fridge/freezer. There are all sorts of little nooks and crannies there. And pull the fridge out, to make sure it didn't fall underneath. Look under the stove, too. Do you have heat vents? Look inside them. If you haven't already taken out the trash, search through it item-by-item. Do you have a collection of poop bags for your dogs? Look through them. Any plants where the dogs could have buried a ring? Dig.
Good luck in your search!
Check the dryer - sometimes things fling out and get lodged in the lint trap, but UNDER THE TRAP - there is an abyss between the trap and the bottom of the dryer. Those little collar inserts go in there a lot.
I would check everything in your place, one at a time and move everything that has been checked to one side of the room. That way you wont be spinning rechecking the same things. I've done this and found tiny things, like the back of an earring.
Do you ever take your ring off or did it slip off? Just curious.
I know someone who lost a five carat stone on their ring while gardening. They never found it. At least you know yours is in the apartment somewhere.
Hope you find it!
check EVERYWHERE. I lost a ring once and found it 2 weeks later INSIDE my printer. I think my cat batted it in there or something? I have no idea. But check everywhere, seriously.
Check the boxes/bags of any food that you may have eaten that day. It could have fallen into a box of crackers while you were eating them!
Good luck with finding your ring, I would be freaking out! Luckily you know its in your apartment. Don't give up!
First of all, take a deep breath. You'll be able to look and function better if you try to not freak out. I agree, first thing is a bed check. Take it totally apart. First the pillow cases, sheets, blankets...check the dryer and washer (check lint traps and tumbler). Under the bed, around the bed, in the frame (I lost my phone here!) Check your hamper, trash can...anything you would have used or been around while sick. That said, you were in the bathroom, check around the toilet. Could it have fallen off to the side? Check under furniture and way deep down in cushions as well--it might have been pushed down, under every appliance and in cupboards. Here's another idea, and it's an odd one. On widowsills. I apparently have a knack for putting things there. No idea why. Check pockets of everything, even things you might not remember wearing, from coats to shorts. How about drawers? You might have gone to brush your teeth and had the ring fall off.
At any rate, good luck!!!
Wishing you best of luck in finding it...and seconding all the great advice you've gotten.
Did anybody mention looking inside of a vacuum cleaner? I found an earring inside of my vacuum bag once.
I know you said you checked your dogs but i'de really (and i know this is gross but for a e ring anything!) make sure to follow them and anytime they use the restroom, ide put on some gloves and make sure its not in their droppings!!
There is a story of a dog eating a 20k diamond and it was found in the dogs business!
good luck! this has happened to me twice with two different rings, so I know how maddening it can be. first one I lost, fell of a table, and I later found in a compartment of my backpack (that had been sitting nearby). so i'd make sure you look in all the little pockets of any bags, shake out clothing, etc. the second one actually fell off my hand, like you, and that one was found in the kitchen trashcan. hopefully you haven't taken out the trash since this happened.
I would just recommend being as methodical as possible. Pick one area to go through and scour it. Empty every shelf, shake out every piece of clothing/towel/whatever. You WILL find it, I'm confident! Sometimes it just takes a little while....
under your fridge, check your laundry, check inside your washer/dryer, in your shoes, in your blankets, in your makeup case...
Check to see if there is a hole in your couch where it could have fallen through to where the springs are... then maybe flip your couch over and cut that thin papery fabric and look by the springs....
Im so sorry, I hope you find it!
I did a massage for a woman who lost her ring-it got put in the cuff of a robe, instead of the pocket by accident. If you have cuffs to a robe -check for it! Let us know when you find it!
