I am right now at the heaviest I have been in my life – and four months away from the wedding, trying to do something about it. Holy. So hard. I used to be in shape (had to work REALLY hard to get there) and totally let myself go last year in the midst of some serious depression 🙁
I started going to Zumba a week ago today. I’m hooked! Zumba burns SO MANY CALORIES! It’s insane! You are constantly moving for the entire hour and since it’s fun it flies right by. I was on a dance/drill team in school but I wouldn’t call myself a dancer by any means – but having done some choreography in the past really does help me catch on to what goes on in the class. Either way, once you learn some of the basic steps it’s pretty easy peasy to keep up or make up your own.
If you haven’t tried it yet – GO. Slap a smile on your face, let your inhibitions go (don’t worry about what anyone thinks, be goofy, laugh, let it jiggle like me and have FUN with it!) and shake IT! When I can’t figure out how to do the steps, I sometimes make up my own, I dance around, I act silly and just go with it.
Is anyone else trying to lose weight with Zumba like me?

I promise you that if you go in with a good attitude, you will enjoy it. I would also advise you to call the place holdin the classes and ask ahead if there is a specific class each week targeted at newcomers – OR if there is a class that typically is less full. That might help you on your first try.
One of my friends that I went with today got a little frustrated because the instructor was really fast paced, but instead of modifying or just dancing around, she would just stop working out completely and wait for the next song. Guess what – she didn’t have a good time. It is ALL in the attitude, I swear.
You will feel uncoordinated, if you have any fat on your body you will jiggle – and so will 99% of the other people there. No one looks around and goes “oh my gosh look at how stupid she looks!” – they are way too busy shaking their own booty!

I tried Zumba for the first time this past week. My friend and I are hooked! Can’t wait to go again this week. You’re right though, it’s quite a workout (which I’m hoping will help me to shed those last few pounds before the wedding). 🙂

Do you where sneakers when you do zumba? I found it tricky to do some of the turns and stuff in my sneakers… just curious what other people do!

I’ve been trying to talk someone into going with me. I’m a terrible dancer so I’ve seen nervous.
Hmm I’m going to check it out in the next couple weeks now for sure.

I’ve been doing Zumba for the past year or two and love, love, love it!
For those who can’t make it to a gym, if you search Zumba on Youtube, some instructors have posted videos of their classes there.

I just wanted to share my zumba experience too as the MOG! I wanted to lose some weight and tone up for my son’s wedding in July, so I started taking zumba classes last January. Well, I got hooked! I go 3 nights a week and sometimes once on the weekend and do about 30-45 minutes of weight lifting before or after each class. I’m happy to report that I have gone from a SIZE 10-12 to a SIZE 4-6 and have lost almost 25 pounds! I didn’t change my diet much, just cut out all junk food and added more salads. My dress is supposed to come in this week and I know I’m going to have to have it altered to a smaller size! I ordered a Petite 8 in February, and have lost 3 more inches from my hips since then. And zumba is really great for making an hour glass waist! I have never been an exerciser before, but zumba is so much fun and takes absolutely no skill. After a few classes, everyone gets the hang of the routines because there is so much repetition. My only advice is to get up front when you are learning (don’t be embarassed!) so you can see the instructor’s feet. To many beginners hide in the back and get lost and discouraged because they can’t copy the instructor’s movements.

I love zumba too!
If your first experience didn’t go very well or the instructor is too fast, switch instructors. Some are traditional and stick to salsa and other latin dance…while a few will be more into hip hop and are fast-paced.
I usually do zumba three-four times a week and there are three different people who teach whose sytles are soo different! I am not much of a dancer either, but just have fun. I second the get to the front, next to the instuctor. They can usually see that you are struggling and will help slow the step down for you to learn since people who have been there can do the step at their own pace. The more you go, the better you get at it ;)!

If you like Zumba and were on dance team you should try TUrbo Kick. It is a choreographed kick boxing/dancing class. It is tons of fun. People clap and yell and are loud the whole time. You feel really uncordinated at first, but it is such a good work out and FUN!
