And it was Barbie!!
My FI and I were in Target, and of course we had to walk down the Barbie aisle, and I happened to notice a bride Barbie, and check out her ring!

I mean, I know she's just a doll, but what kind of message is this sending to little girls? My FI was like "Now girls are gonna grow up and think if their ring isn't that big it doesn't count." I'm sure I had a bride Barbie when I was little (I had like a zillion and a half Barbies) but I don't remember anything about her ring, but I'm sure some little girls will pay attention and it will stay with them.
What do you guys think about Huge Engagement Ring Barbie??
her rings always looked like that. I had barbies in the 80's and her diamond was bigger than her finger-- so were her earrings. I think that because they are plastic and removable, they can't make them much smaller.
but don't get me started on that dress. she's got a pretty bad taste in wedding dresses!
@janie-janie: Oh yes! I didn't even pay attention to the dress until I got home and looked at the picture because I was staring at the ring. It is pretty horrible. Haha.
It probably looks that big, because her body is so oddly proportioned! Haha.
I'm gonna 2nd the "it's plastic so in order to make it it can't be super tiny." Honestly, I think it's harmless. Unless you're playing with and taking lessons from barbie through your teens and having that image reinforced from other sources I'm sure little girls will grow up to be just fine. :)
I actually remember a few of my Barbies having some ginormous bling. Funny that I still remember that.
Barbie always has and always will enforce a sexist view of women (granted sometimes they do some things to add some LESS sexist "stories" to Barbie). Just my opinion
@CarolinaCola: I agree with you! maybe barbie's ring on it's own isn't so bad, but no doubt our culture is obsessed with size and having huge rings. Not EVERYONE feels that way, I know, but alot of people do.
The real life version! ha!

Her enormous out of proportion ring goes with her enormous out of proportion tatas, itty bitty waist and feet.

@CarolinaCola: That one's been around for awhile .. One of my nieces had it, and when you pinch the ring it flashed. Yeah she's 17 now and thinks it depends on how much money you both make ... that it's a ring not proof of his love. She's looking forward to the ROCK she gets to rock on her 25th anniversary cause that one's the important one. (yeah she r ules)
Is that "broken-wristed bridal Barbie"? Since when did they make her wrist adjustable and weird looking like that!?
I remember those rings, there's a hole in between 2 of her fingers and you jam this ring-on-a-spike in between. That girl has everything! :P
@Juliepants: Haha yes, I remembered that about Barbie's rings. I was telling my FI about the little earring-like rings on the way home from Target.
i think it would just be really hard to make a tiny ring on barbie!
@HisIrishPrincess: props to your niece! I feel like that attitude is rare anymore.
Ugh. I know Barbie is just a toy but the feminist in me is a bit disgusted. If my kids want Barbies, fine, I'll deal with it. But I'm yanking that ring off, it's ridiculous.
I'm sorry but I would seriously worry about a grown woman's IQ if she was upset about her diamond size because Barbie had a big one. I'd also wonder what the parents did wrong as well.
Barbie is fun - and I wouldn't blame the behavior of a spoiled, ungrateful grown woman on a scapegoat like Barbie.
What about all the real life women out there that have HUGE rocks? What if her own mother has a big diamond? Would it be considered bad if those women had big rings? NO. Barbie is the least of our worries.
My Barbies always had big jewelry and it never once entered my mind that that's what my ring should look like. In fact, I haven't really thought about Barbie since I stopped playing with them at 12.
My feminist mother didnt buy me barbies- I had "trolls" instead. I think they were the ancestors to smurfs-- any one else have troll? house, clothes, etc?
Yeah Barbie's rings (and earrings) have always been huge. Off topic-ish but this girl built a 'real life' Barbie for her high school eating disorder awareness week and this is what she might look like:

Pretty terrifying right?
@CarolinaCola: i think you're blowing it out of proportion. nothing about barbie is realistic, or most dolls for that matter. it sounds like you have ring envy towards barbie.
@retreadbride: I didn't have trolls but they were in my possession somehow. I think my grandparents' house had them?
Yes! I don't think my mom was specifically against Barbie, but she definitely didn't encourage her. We had trolls and My Little Ponies and felt-covered bunnies and bears who lived in our doll house. Regardless of the ring thing, I'm hoping to avoid having Barbie stuff when we have kids - its cheap plastic mass produced junk made in China - there are so many cooler, more creative toys out there.
@Sweetie Pie 21: I'm not outraged or seriously upset that Barbie has a big ring. I just never noticed it before and wanted to see what other bees thought. I'm not blowing anything out of proportion, and no, I'm certainly not jealous of Barbie's ring.
This was supposed to be a fun post. Never thought I'd be accused of being jealous of Barbie.
I always had the Barbies with the non-diamond rings...
like this (the only picture I could find with my limited search words "barbie's pink ring") Looks like those candy earrings...

That aside I still would like a "larger ring" (2-3.5 tcw) but do not want any diamonds.
@nineteen87: Yep, those are the kind of rings I remember from my Barbies. Just a little pink dot.
This is the bride barbie my cousin had:
You couldn't even see her ring because of the poofy polyester explosions everywhere. ohhh the 80s...

I'm waiting for someone to mention the gigantic gemstones those troll dolls had in their belly buttons. Stupid gemstone envy!!!
I don't see anything wrong with the big ring barbie has. She's already unrealistic as it is, what's one more thing in the mix at this point?
Waaaaait aminute. I thought that there was a bride Barbie that had a ring that big because little girls could actually wear it. The shank itself was elastic plastic and went around a few of barbies fingers and fit at a child's pinky finger or something like that.
I had a bunch of Barbies growing up and they never really influenced much... Ok except maybe my love of super fabulous clothes.
@mandypop: LOL! That was back in the day when you could find a dress with sleeves!!! :)
@roxymalone: I need a "like" button for this comment! Awesome!
LOL that barbie model that the high school girl made in the picture above is horrific!!!!
@chouette: great post! More girls and young women should that like that. Down with Barbie and ALL of her minions! LOL
